I am writing this the day after a meeting of the clergy of the Huddersfield Episcopal Area with Nick Baines, Bishop of Leeds. Dr Baines has a clear vision for the Diocese of West Yorkshire and the Dales – a vision he spelled out under three headings. First, the Bishop spoke of a Diocese which is vibrant. Vibrancy is about energy and activity, which are signs of life. Truly to confess Jesus as Lord is to be vibrant, because Christians are those in whom God’s Holy Spirit lives. As we say in the Nicene Creed which we use at Communion Services, the Holy Spirit is ‘the Giver of life’. Have you been born anew by God’s Holy Spirit? The new birth is essential for a relationship with God. Secondly, the Bishop spoke of a Diocese which is confident. Christian confidence is confidence in the gospel: that God has given himself to us in the person of Jesus Christ, to die in the place of all who put their trust in him. He took on himself everything that cuts us off from God. Knocking people’s confidence by means of harmful gossip is a serious sin. Sometimes people speak of village life as if that were inevitable, but it should not be so among us. The apostle Paul writes that we should ‘encourage one another and build one another up’ (1 Thessalonians 5.11). The best way to do that is to remind one another of the sure and certain hope the gospel gives us. Thirdly, the Bishop spoke of a Diocese in which we live and tell the good news about Jesus Christ. The Bishop alluded to words sometimes (wrongly) attributed to Francis of Assisi: ‘Tell the gospel at all times and use words if necessary.’ As the Bishop said, nothing could be more dangerously unhelpful. If God has raised Jesus from the dead, we must share that good news. Words matter. People in Honley and Brockholes need urgently to hear the good news that they can be right with God through faith in Jesus Christ. If we don’t tell them, no one will. To believe that good news is to live in the light of the freedom it brings, and there is no better way to live.

A note from the Vicar November 2014

So that is the vision for the Diocese. I find it very encouraging. Over the next few months, we shall be thinking about how it can help us to form a coherent vision for our parish of Honley with Brockholes. By the time you read this, Jonathan Gibbs will have been consecrated as the new Area Bishop of Huddersfield. Please give thanks for him and pray for his ministry, that through him many in Kirklees and Calderdale will encounter Jesus Christ and so turn away from everything that spoils the world and put their trust in the good news.

A Celebration of All Saints and Commemoration of the Faithful Departed

This service will be held at St George’s Brockholes on Saturday 1 November at 6.00 pm and is a service for the whole parish. If you have suffered a bereavement of a family member or friend in the past twelve months – or even longer ago - it is an opportunity to remember them at this service where candles will be lit and prayers said and the names of the faithful departed will be read out.

If you would like to attend this service and need transport, please speak to the Vicar.

May He support us all the day long till the shades lengthen and the evening comes

and the busy world is hushed and the fever of life is over

and our work is done. Then in His mercy may he give us a safe lodging

and a holy rest and peace at the last.

Cardinal Newman - Submitted by Pauline Adams

Almighty God, may my mouth speak for justice, may my feet walk for justice,

may my hands work for justice, but more than any of those,

may my heart and soul long for justice, until your will is done on earth as it is in heaven.

Peter Graystone – Christian Aid

Prince of Peace, you were born into a world where terror reigned and fear ruled,

and live today in a world crucified by war. Fill us with your passion for justice – that wherever we see evil abound

we may live to disturb its path and strive to build bridges of reconciliation.

In the darkness, beckon us with your kindly light, That we may never lose sight of your vision of peace –

In which the lion lies down with the lamb.

Honley Feast Celebration

Congratulations to Sabrena and the schoolchildren for decorating the well so beautifully. The Yorkshire Traction Honley Band played wonderfully, it was great to sing hymns with them. Thank you ladies for all the cakes and buns you made for tea also to everyone that gave me help on the day. Thank you to everyone that attended. The Service was lovely and the afternoon went well. On my part it was a pleasure to be there. Thank you everyone.

Gillian Greaves

Thank You! I would like to thank all the ladies who helped with the Harvest flowers, and a big thank you to Pam and Terry Kelly for allowing Andrea and myself to help ourselves to all the Dahlias from their garden.

Sunday evening service on 30th November

Over the last few years we have held Taizé services on the evening of the fifth Sunday of the month whenever these have occurred. At the last service, in August, we welcomed 12 visitors from Kirkheaton Parish Church. Kirkheaton is part of our Deanery and the churches in the Deanery are very keen to support one another. To this end, in November – another month with five Sundays – we are not holding a service at St Mary’s in the evening but instead will be going to Kirkheaton Parish Church (St John’s, Kirkheaton) to join them for their Meditation Service for Advent. This starts at 6.00 pm and, as the name suggests, will be a quiet, contemplative service. We can organise transport for anyone who wishes to attend but is not able to get there under their own steam. Please sign up on the list at the back of church if you require transport.

At the October meeting we were pleased to welcome our own member Bev Playle who spoke about step-families. Bev spoke both about interesting statistics concerning blended families and candidly about her own family life experiences and observations. Thank you Bev for a very interesting and thought provoking talk. The November meeting will be held on Wednesday 5th at 2.00 pm in the afternoon to avoid turning out in the dark and cold (apologies time incorrect in last magazine), where Jenny Lockwood is talking about ‘Huddersfield Choral Society’. Everyone is welcome - please join us. The Branch was very fortunate to be nominated for the Yorkshire Building Society ‘Make a Difference Week’ and will receive a donation of £100 at a presentation on 3rd November. This will be put to good use to support the work of the Mothers’ Union locally. Members are reminded they are welcome to attend the MU Advent Service in Wakefield Cathedral on Wednesday 3rd December at 1.00 pm, with address by Lynne Tembey, National President. The December meeting, also on Wednesday 3rd, will take the form of a party with faith supper and entertainment. Arrangements will be advertised nearer the time, but please be prepared to sign up to bring items from the supper list.

Parish Rooms Re-ordering – Update

A few folk have been asking what has happened to the reordering plans so we thought it a good idea to update everyone via the magazine. ‘Development of a link corridor and full refurbishment of the parish rooms’ remains as the preferred reordering option and the Finance & Property Committee will be seeking the necessary professional advice and guidance about how to proceed and what we would be allowed to do etc. We are committed to the refurbishment, not least because the rooms are not accessible to those who are disabled and we want to ensure equal access to all church premises. Proceeding with this project however, is obviously going to take a lot of time, legal proceedings and of course, money. However, we could be talking about a couple of years until the full project is able to ‘get off the ground’. In the meantime, we have a duty to ensure the parish rooms remain fit for purpose and that we are able to promote room hire to generate some income. There are some matters that clearly cannot wait. For example, we’ve recently had to spend money on repairs to the heating system. Recently, we took the decision to close the Bookshop, as it was losing money. The books have been redistributed to various charitable organisations. The Finance & Property Committee has decided to undertake some rudimentary decorating of this room so that it can be used as a meeting room for both church use and for hire. This will involve making good the walls, some painting and other cosmetic attention to make it pleasant for use. We will continue to keep you informed of how the rest of the reordering plans are progressing through the parish magazine. If you have any queries or concerns, do talk to one of the churchwardens – Bev Playle or Carol Hirst.

Christmas Street Market 2014 Saturday 6th December is the day for our 11th Christmas Street Market. Whatever the weather, it’s always a great community event and this year we shall have over 40 stalls with the usual, and some less usual, goods on offer. The Market is open from 10.00 am to 3.30 pm and we will, as usual, be offering a prize for the best decorated stall. The free entertainment in church this year will be: 11.00 am Emley Brass Band 12.30 pm Honley Male Voice Choir 2.00 pm Honley Ladies Choir Available in advance will be Christmas Street Market raffle tickets which are available from Carol Hirst – as always, there are many lovely prizes to be won. We always need lots of volunteers to help and the more we have the easier it is for everyone. There are lists in church where you can sign up to help. Why not encourage/cajole a neighbour or friend to come along with you to help? It is not hard or heavy work but the day will only run smoothly if we have plenty of people to set up and take away the tables and gazebos. There are, however, lots of different ways to help and not all involve moving tables and gazebos, so please have a look at the lists and see what you could do. In anticipation of lots of people flocking to sign up (!), many thanks for your help – it is much appreciated.

Christmas Street Market – Soup We will once again be selling soup. If you are able to make either vegetable or leek and potato soup, please can you sign up on the list at the back of church by Sunday 16th November? This is always a popular stall and all takings go to St Mary’s. We know from Lent Lunches that we are blessed with many skilled soup makers at St Mary’s so please sign up, your help will be much appreciated.

Christmas Street Market – Bric-a-Brac stall This year the ‘Junk’ stall has been re-named the Bric-a-Brac stall! Whatever the name, we still need your items of unwanted, but saleable, items please. Laurence Jones, assisted by Craig Noble and Graham Wardman are collecting items – please bring your items to church to give to them. Please note we are not allowed to sell mains electrical items. Thank you for your contributions – and do feel free to come along on the day and buy something yourself!

Advent Calendars

The 2014 Real Advent Calendar is a fun way for parents, grandparents and godparents to share the Christmas story. Behind the first giant window there is a 32-page Christmas story/Advent booklet with a page for every day of December. Behind each of the 25 windows there is a fair trade chocolate star and a few words from the Christmas Story. As well as celebrating the true meaning of Christmas, the calendar makes a charity donation to Funzi & Bodo Trust from every sale. I will be taking orders for Real Chocolate Advent Calendars from 1st November. If you wish to order one through me, please sign up on the order form available in church and the deadline will be 16th November. The cost of the calendars is £3.99.

150 Year Celebration Bench Dedication Service

Children and staff from Brockholes School would like to say a massive thank you for the bench that has been given by St George’s Church to recognise the fantastic way that school and Church worked together during the 150 year celebrations. A special Collective Worship, led by Rev Beadle, was held on 15th October where members of St George’s Church and parents were invited to join the school. We will enjoy using the bench for many years!

AD - September 2014 The first meeting of the new year saw a slightly smaller group of 10 children, but enthusiasm was high. The ‘Welcome to AD’ collage was well prepared under Sue’s guidance and looks really good at the back of church. The game with the parachute and ‘Beetle’ substitute game, organised by Val, brought great excitement and everyone entered into the games keenly. Our new gazebos were unveiled and will be a great benefit for some of our AD meetings, St. George’s Day and Social events. Sadly Caroline will not be able to attend on future Thursdays due to pressure of work and we thank her most sincerely for everything she has done for AD over 12 years. We will miss her presence at the meetings, her expertise and her caring approach to the children. Thank you Caroline.

... and October 2014 Harvest was understandably the theme for this meeting – three days before the Church Harvest and four days before the School Harvest Thanksgivings. 11 young people took part in games with a harvest theme – corn, wheat, barley and oats bases, a relay game with the final challenge of making an apple/orange art display and the mental rigour of remembering in Kim’s Game where, of course, the items were all ‘food’ related. Purple and white heather decorated window displays were created, each one enclosing a harvest food gift. Finally the ‘coat hanger’ tree was redecorated with card apples, bearing the names of those who attended plus some visitors. We all thought about Sue enjoying the Australian climate! Next meeting November 13th. We have spaces for more young people aged 8 to 12 years, so do spread the word.

An Illustrated Talk by Peter Drake

“In the Footsteps of Lewis and Clark - Retracing the Steps of Great American Pioneers” Friday, 21st November, at 7.30 pm

An expedition that followed in the footsteps of two of the greatest pioneers in American history is the subject of this illustrated talk being held at Brockholes Village Hall. In 1804 William Clark and Meriwether Lewis with a ‘Corps of Discovery’ comprising nearly four dozen men, set off on an epic voyage from St Louis to the west coast of the USA. Their remarkable journey through uncharted territory met with hostile tribes, strange new species and the hardships of crossing the Rockies. In March 1806 the Corps left the Pacific coast at the mouth of the Columbia River, abandoning canoes as the river became too treacherous, crossing the mountains through ten foot drifts of snow, finally returning to St Louis via the Missouri and Mississippi rivers in September 1806. In 2004 local explorer, Peter Drake, led an expedition that retraced this remarkable journey. Peter and his team spent six weeks, using canoes, horses and trekking, from St Louis to the Pacific Ocean in Oregon, following the original route, as well as taking in Mount Rushmore, the Little Big Horn and Yellowstone National Park Peter, who was awarded an MBE in 2013, has spent more than 40 years organising and leading expeditions to more than 65 countries across the world. Many of his excursions were made on behalf of Yorkshire Schools’ Exploring Society, some for Scouts and some for adults. Admission is £5.00 including light refreshments. Tickets are available from Peter Drake (663678), David Wyles (662079) or Brockholes Post Office. Proceeds to Brockholes Village Trust’s fund for re-building the porch at the Village Hall.

All Saints’ Day - the feast day of all the redeemed All Saints, or All Hallows, is the feast of all the redeemed, known and unknown, who are now in heaven. When the English Reformation took place, the number of saints in the calendar was drastically reduced, with the result that All Saints’ Day stood out with a prominence that it had never had before. This feast day first began in the East, perhaps as early as the 5th century, as commemorating ‘the martyrs of the whole world’. A Northern English 9th century calendar named All Hallows as a principal feast, and such it has remained. Down the centuries devotional writers have seen in it the fulfilment of Pentecost and indeed of Christ’s redemptive sacrifice and resurrection.

Prisons Week 16th-22nd November 2014 Building Hope

Lord, you offer freedom to all people. We pray for those in prison. Break the bonds of fear and isolation that exist. Support with your love prisoners and their families and friends, prison staff and all who care. Heal those who have been wounded by the actions of others, especially the victims of crime. Help us to forgive one another, to act justly, love mercy and walk humbly together with Christ in his strength and in his Spirit, now and every day. Amen
