Dear All In recent months have you noticed how t-shirts, mugs, plates, whatever have appeared with bold white lettering on a red background?

KEEP CALM AND

CARRY ON. Such we are told was to be the message to the citizens of Great Britain had we been invaded by the Germans in 1940. During Lent we may well have at times almost been overwhelmed by the powers of the devil to defeat us and make us abandon not one but all our Ash Wednesday resolutions. But I have taken heart as I perceive amongst my fellow Christians there remains an air of calm. Indeed we may even feel the Spirit of the Lord moving in the

parish with the renewed resolution of so many to share in the ministry of the church despite the absence of our own parish priest. Witness the inspired clear up of the surrounds of our own Mother church for Mothering Sunday and the Service that day (surely a legacy of Father David among us) the weekday services, the study groups, the lunches… And now Passion Sunday, Palm Sunday, Holy Week approach. Here we may share in the mystery of the people’s welcome to the Lord in Jerusalem.

“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” Day by day we try to enter into the Lord’s final days, to share with him on Maundy Thursday the Last Supper, to witness to him on Good Friday, light the Easter Candle on Holy Saturday and share in his Resurrection on Easter Day.

Daily at noon ask God to prepare the heart and mind of our next parish priest

The Church is never free from attacks by those who have no sympathy with either Christian or any religious belief. And there is much controversy within and without concerning Gay marriage. The retirement of possibly the most eminent Archbishop of Canterbury for very many years leads to extreme positions being taken by those who seek to see their own opinions supported. Easter comes to remind us of the truth -

The Strife is o’er, the Battle done Now is the victor’s triumph won.

The Lord’s resurrection is the reassurance that when we die we pass into a new existence through the grave and gate of death; its message that here and now we may share in the eternal life that is ours hereafter, that we may indeed even now partake of the Bread of Heaven in the Holy Eucharist. In the west Easter comes at the same time as Spring.

Around us are the golden daffodils; the trees are bright with the gloss of fresh new leaves, which our Yorkshire poet Philip Larkin describes in The Trees; “their greenness is a kind of grief”. “Is it that they are born again/And we grow old?” he asks. “No, they die too./ Their yearly trick of looking new is written down in rings of grain.” We can almost hear the wind as it blows the leaves. “Last year is dead, they seem to say,/Begin afresh, afresh, afresh.” Keep calm then and carry on. May the good Lord speak to us through the earthquake, wind and fire that still small voice of calm!

A very happy Easter to you all!

Henry Stapleton

Another Big Thank You

In 2011 giving in the Parish totalled £71,200. Of this £43,700 was given by those using our Planned Giving Scheme, and a further £12,700 was recovered from the government under Gift Aid. The Collection Plate amounted to £8,300 and General Donations were £6,500. Acknowledging that this was another challenging time for the economy the PCC would like to offer a sincere thank you to everyone for their generosity. For the full financial picture for 2011 please watch out for our forthcoming AGM’s. We focus a lot on the financial aspects of giving. Christian giving is much more dynamic than that, and we are mindful that you give to the Parish in other ways – your time, your talents, your skills. Money can only take us so far and, perhaps, it is in this other giving where our true riches are to be found.

“You can give without loving but you cannot love without giving”.

Please ask and we will be happy to help on any aspect of giving.

Pastoral Care

Just a reminder that a group of us meet once a month to pray for those who are ill, anxious, bereaved or have any other problem. Our next meeting will be on Wednesday 4th April following the midweek Communion Service. Please support us if you can by joining us and keep your requests for prayers or home visits coming in. We are always grateful to those of you who keep us informed about the progress of those for whom prayers have been requested. “Open Church” on Thursday mornings will restart after Easter. Please let Carol Hirst know if you are willing to help with this. If you are interested in pastoral matters and would like to be part of the team please let me know.

Notices in Church At a recent DCC Meeting some concern was expressed about times at the end of the 9.30 am Sunday morning service at St Mary’s when a number of different people want to come forward to make announcements. It is suggested that, where possible, any notices are written in the book provided in church by Wednesday morning at 10.00 am. These may then appear on the Pew Sheet for the following Sunday or be announced by the Churchwardens as part of the normal end of service announcements. Thank you.

Report on the DCC Meeting - 14th February Ten members were present when Chairman Clive Waind opened the meeting with a prayer. The minutes from the previous meeting were unanimously approved. under Matters Arising it was agreed that Carol Hirst would once again organise a rota for Open Church to be available for visitors on Thursday mornings from Easter. Further discussion relating to the possibility of every day opening led to some concern about the security of the sound system equipment. The possibility of a CCTV security system will be investigated by the Finance and Property Committee. Following the loss of our Christian Aid coordinator, John Ambler, it has been decided not to attempt to deliver envelopes to the whole village but to hold a street collection on Saturday, May 19th and in addition to have available some envelopes for those wishing to make gift-aided donations. Reports were given from 4/5 Transformational Planning Groups.

Angeline Baker reported that the Prayer and Spirituality Group had planned the Lent Course, whilst new members of this group would be made very welcome.

Pat Green reported that the Pastoral Care Group had discussed ways of contacting people on the fringes of the church via the Magazine and special cards with a picture of St Mary’s produced by John Dean for use on any appropriate occasion. On the subject of “welcoming” the group proposed changes to the weekly pew sheet to contain more relevant information for any newcomers to the services.

Cliff Green reported on behalf of the Finance & Property Committee that some small repairs and adjustments had been made to the new heating system. The Reordering Sub-Committee had met with Architect Stuart Beaumont and a recommendation that the sum of £1,500 plus VAT be spent on producing 4 suggested schemes for adapting church to provide a kitchen, meeting room, office and storage space was approved by the DCC.

For the Worship Planning Group Jane Wardman reported on 3 meetings which, as well as reviewing special services, had produced a calendar of special services planned for the rest of 2012. It is planned that the hymns for the Songs of Praise Service at Honley Feast will be chosen by the congregation and it is recognised that the numerous Christmas services require more co-ordination in the choice of hymns in order to avoid repetition. Concern about fire regulations when the church is used by the schools or other outside groups will be investigated.

A number of important items were raised under Correspondence:

The need to consider repairs to the church tower as pointed out in our last Quinquennial Report had produced a letter from Stuart Beaumont setting out recommendations as to how to proceed.

St George’s Church had invited St Mary’s congregation to join in 2 important services as part of the 150th Anniversary celebrations at Brockholes. These are on Sunday December 2nd 2012 (the start of the celebrations) and Sunday, April 28th 2013 (the anniversary of the actual opening of St George’s).

A letter from Helen Ambler gave details of a proposed John Ambler Memorial Quiz Night to be held on Saturday, June 9th at 6.00 pm in the Parish Room.

Following an approach by the Diocesan Childrens, Youth and Families Team with an offer to visit PCC/DCC meetings in the Almondbury Deanery during 2012 it was agreed to invite them to our DCC meeting on April 17th.

Under Any Other Business it was noted that the Parish Room water heater required repair. From the Deanery Synod Graham Wardman reported that parishes were being urged to make great efforts to pay their Common Fund contributions in 2012. The Annual Meeting of St Mary’s Church will take place after the morning service on Sunday, April 22nd. Also, an accumulation of rubbish in the Burial Ground Cremation Plot was reported. As the weather improves there will be a need for grass cutting to take place in the Plot throughout the summer months. Charles Kaye agreed to look into these matters and volunteers will be called for to help.

Churchwarden Notices

Something a little different On Wednesday 4th April at 7.30 p.m. there will be a service at St Mary’s in the Taizé style. If you have been before to a Taizé service and enjoyed it, then come again. If you have never experienced Taizé before, do come and join us as we sit quietly in the candle-lit church and pray, sing, listen to readings and contemplate them silently in a relaxed and unhurried way. Leave all the “busy-ness” of life behind and come and enjoy a peaceful way to still the body and stir the soul.

Jane Wardman

A letter of resignation has been received from Jean Chadwick in which she relinquishes her position as one of our organists and as choir mistress in order that she may move to different pastures. Many members of St Mary’s will have cause to be very grateful to her for the music that she has provided over the last fifteen years or so. Everyone will wish Jean and Lesley successful music-making and meaningful worship in their new venture.

Stuart Beaumont our architect will give a presentation and answer questions on some of the options that are available to us in the re-ordering of St Mary’s and the Parish Room. This will take place following the 9.30 am morning service on Sunday 29 April. Provisional sketch plans/drawings will be displayed prior to this date in church. Anyone from the Parish is welcome to attend.

I hope everyone has received a copy of the 2012 Programme. This year we are including non-members and hope that many will join us at our meetings. If you would like a copy please ask. Thanks to Alison for arranging the speakers and producing the programme and Pauline for delivering them to members. A Council Meeting is to be held on Thursday 22 March at 7.00pm in Dewsbury Town Hall and a report will be given at our April meeting. Fourteen members have expressed a wish to attend the ‘Lady Day Service’ at Newsome Church on Monday 26th March at 7.30pm. The service also marks the closure of the Newsome Branch. A reminder that the April meeting on 4th April at 2.00pm to 4.00pm will be based on Action and Outreach, in particular, women's refuges, New Hall prison and the teenage mums project. We will be sewing bags for the refuges/prison, knitting premature baby coats and hats, making fleece blankets and providing toiletries for the Special Care Baby Unit at Calderdale Royal Hospital (our nearest centre). If you are going to be a knitter please brings size 10 (3.25) needles and if you have any white baby 4 ply wool that would be helpful. Don’t worry if you haven’t - there will be a supply at the meeting, together with patterns. For those who don’t knit we will be sewing bags for the refuges and again material will be available. If you cannot knit or sew please still come and join in our Christian Fellowship. On Wednesday 2nd May instead of the usual meeting, the branch has arranged a special concert in Church by the musical group ‘Mixed Harmony’. This promises to be a most enjoyable evening. Tickets will be available from myself and others, £5 including refreshments. Please do all come and join us for this special evening in church.

BROCKHOLES NEWS

A D

At the time of writing this article some Brockholes mums still had a lovely surprise in store. Caroline Lee led a super session making lipstick holders or mobile phone holders as Mother’s Day gifts. She had selected bright coloured felting and showed the children how to do ‘blanket stitch’ round the edges. Sewing on a button was another skill achieved by the young people. Cutting the buttonhole took great concentration as sharp scissors were needed! After some final floral decorations had been sewn on, each child had a great end result and a lovely gift for Mum. Thanks to Julie and Barbara for additional help with the sewing and we were delighted to welcome Rev. John Barnes demonstrating ‘versatility’ in his pastoral work! The children also signed their names to a page for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Book. Please note the next AD is on Thursday 26th April in church when final preparations will be made for St George’s Day. AD 10th Birthday Don’t miss AD’s 10th birthday celebrations at AD on Thursday 10th May and in Church on Sunday 13th May at 11.00 am. All welcome on the 13th.

Sue Clay, Caroline Lee, Verena Wood and Kate Drake.

Congratulations!

Maxwell Kenworthy has recently passed the searching examina-tions to become a Fellow of the Royal College of Organists. A great achievement! We look forward to a concert by Max and friends in St George's Church on Thursday July 26th. More details later.

St George’s ‘Café Style’ Service

It was lovely to see 52 Brockholes people in the Village Hall on Sunday 4th March for our second ‘Café Style’ service (the previous one having been held last September). It was also lovely that the ages spanned from 16 months to over 80 years. The service was light, easy to follow on power point and included well known hymns. (The last hymn being accompanied by the children playing a variety of musical instruments!). There was a bit of a Welsh theme running through the event mark-ing St David’s Day on 1st March. Rev Jenny Barnes had a short quiz prepared on this subject and presented the two highest scores with lovely daffodils tied up in blue ribbon. The lowest two got a leek each but still with a pretty bow. Coffee was available before the service and afterwards a light lunch of soup, sandwiches and hot dogs was served. Many thanks to the music group and everyone who prepared food plus a great big thank you to all who came and participated with enthusiasm. John and Jenny Barnes gave us great support which was much appreci-ated. This is definitely something we shall do again.

A Note from Year 4 at Brockholes CoE(C) School We are Year 4 and we have a very exciting time at school. We all play a brass instrument in the Year 4 School Brass Band, we play either a trumpet, trombone or euphonium. We have performed for the Summer Fayre, at the Christmas Carol concert in Church and we will be joining other schools in a concert at Holmfirth High School in May. May will be a busy month for us because we are going on our first residential visit to Cliffe House in Shepley. At Cliffe House we do lots of science. We investigate the rocks and soils of our local area and what creatures live in the soil. There is an amazing adventure playground that Mrs Leadbeater (our teacher) says we can play on a lot because it will help us sleep! This term we have been learning about the Earth and Space. We know about all the planets in the Solar System and have designed and built a city from another planet together with aliens to live there. We have investigated light sources, how light travels, how shadows are formed and used mirrors to reflect light. This week we have been discussing ‘Values’. We made a long list of the things we believed in and qualities we are aiming for in our lives. We came up with five core values.

HONESTY – FRIENDSHIP – KINDNESS – RESPECT - RESONSIBILITY

In Year 4 we are doing our best to live up to our values and we wish you all a wonderful summer.

Faith and the barbershop A man went to a barbershop to have his hair cut and his beard trimmed. As the barber worked, they began to talk about various subjects. When they eventually touched on the subject of God, the barber said: 'I don't believe that God exists.' 'Why do you say that?' asked the customer. 'Well, you just have to go out in the street to realize that God doesn't exist. Tell me, if God exists, would there be so many sick people? Would there be abandoned children? If God existed, there would be neither suffering nor pain. I can't imagine a loving God who would allow all of these things.' The customer thought for a moment, but didn't respond because he didn't want to start an argument. The barber finished his job and the customer left the shop. Just after he left the barbershop, he saw a man in the street with long, stringy, dirty hair and an untrimmed beard. He looked dirty and unkempt. The customer turned back to enter the barbershop again and said to the barber: 'You know what? Barbers do not exist.' 'How can you say that?' asked the surprised barber. 'I am here, and I am a barber. And I just worked on you!' 'No!' the customer exclaimed. 'Barbers don't exist because if they did, there would be no people with dirty long hair and untrimmed beards, like that man outside.' 'Ah, but barbers DO exist! That's what happens when people do not come to me.' 'Exactly!' affirmed the customer. 'That's the point! God, too, DOES exist! That's what happens when people do not go to him and don't look to him for help. That's why there's so much pain and suffering in the world.'
