Dear Friends,
The lead up to our Easter celebration was a very busy time for
many people at St. Mary’s and St. George’s, both spiritually and
practically. I would like to offer my grateful thanks to everyone
who cleaned, fettled, rubbed (brasses), decorated with flowers and
did anything to make our churches look, smell and feel the way they
did. For all musicians who played or sang, enabling the Easter joy to
resonate throughout our villages, I offer my gratitude. Finally, last
but not least, my grateful thanks to everyone who was able to come
and join with us in our worship making Easter Day a very joyous and
special occasion.
With our Easter celebrations behind us we now look forward
to the feast of the Ascension and Pentecost (Whit Sunday in old
money), a time when we remember Jesus ascending into heaven and
a celebration of the coming of the Holy Spirit giving power to those
first disciples.
It is also a time when we recall the final command of Jesus to
his disciples, “go out and make disciples of all nations”.
We are reminded that this command is also for us today. As those
first disciples were staggered by the enormity of the task before
them, so are we. Yet like them, we are not left powerless in this
task, as God promises to send his Holy Spirit to empower us to do
his work of making disciples of all people.
May the Lord bless you and keep you
and strengthen you in the task that is set before you!
Yours in Christ’s service
David

Think Twice Before Giving to the Collection
Have we finally lost it – what kind of advice is that to give when the Church is desperate for every penny? Well we think it makes good sense. Regular and consistent giving is vital to the health of the Church and its mission. We want everyone giving via the offertory plate to consider joining our Planned Giving Scheme instead. It does not matter how often you actually come to Church. Your stronger commitment to giving will ensure your response to God’s love is making a difference, whether you are there or not. If you are using the offertory plate to increase your giving – remember that if you do not use a yellow envelope it will not qualify for Gift Aid. Please consider increasing your Standing Order instead. You can also use the Offertory Card when the collection is taken. You can give using weekly envelopes or better still via a standing order. To give using your bank you complete a Standing Order Form with whatever amount or frequency of transfer you choose (monthly, quarterly or annually). If you are a taxpayer, by signing one simple Gift Aid Declaration the Parish can reclaim the tax you have already paid on your giving - at no extra cost to you. You can cancel this at any time if your circumstances change. Please ask and we will be happy to help on any aspect of giving.

Open Church As reported in a previous issue of the Magazine the Pastoral Care Group are hoping to have church open each Thursday morning from 10.00 am to 12.00 noon. This will commence after Easter on Thursday, April 28th. We would welcome volunteers to help with this and there is a list at the back of church for signatures – either for one or two hours. Hopefully there will be two people available for each session. You can volunteer for just one Thursday, this does not commit you to every Thursday or even every month. Coffee will be available from the Parish Room. Please contact Carol Hirst or myself for further details.

Dear Friends from St Mary’s 25, Sykes Court
St Stephen’s Fold Lindley
HD3 3SD
Many thanks for the planter, complete with plants, which Charles and Diana Kaye brought for us yesterday from you all. It is now sitting on our small patio. We have settled in here extremely well – everyone is very friendly and helpful and there is a very good community spirit. We now go to Lindley Church which is in an interregnum at present. We should be pleased to see anyone from St Mary’s who would like to visit us – please telephone first (461088) so that we can make sure we’re in. Once again, our grateful thanks and our love to you all.
Kenneth and Pauline.
Honley Ladies Choir Spring Concert Thanks to the Ladies Choir for their concert at St Mary's on March 19th. It was well supported and it was good to have the church used by our local community. An evening which included readings, poems, humour as well as the choir and solo pieces was well received. Many thanks.
John Ambler
Thank You We would like to thank all our friends at St Mary's for their wonderful support shown by flowers, cards and prayers and also for their attendance at St John's Church, Birkby for Mum's funeral. Their presence was a great comfort.

School News - Honley C.E (V.C.) Junior School Easter On Wednesday 13th April parents attended Easter Collective Worship in the school hall, for Years 5+6 in the morning and Years 3+4 in the afternoon. Parents could also view an ‘explosive’ display from Year 3 homework projects on volcanoes and the ‘cracking’ skills of the Decorated Egg competition which was won by: Phoebe Cole 3J, Anya Gemmell 3H, Ella Whiteley 4J, Kelly Moorhouse 4H, Josephine Rudeforth 5H, Lorna Allen 5J, Francesca Rudeforth 6H and Charlotte Holmes 6J. Friends of Honley School ran a cake stall which not surprisingly sold out quickly! Special thanks to Mrs. Speight for her cake for the staff. Honley Community Grow your Own Also on Wednesday 13th April Mrs Haigh and a group of children attended a community event in a Honley retirement living home. The event was organised by Roundway TRA and KNH and was funded by the Excel Community grant. It was a new project that aims to bring older and young people together and also a chance for different communities to get together and meet new people and form new friendships. There was a variety of activities including cook and eat; eat a rainbow (which was different fruits) and smoothie making which promotes ideas of healthy eating. Outside, Kirklees Streetscene demonstrated how to make herb hanging baskets & bird feeders. KNH made salad boxes and paper pots for seeds and made up some potato planters, some of which the children could bring back for the school vegetable garden. The children also came up with some ideas of things to do in the new school wildlife area.
9
The children described the morning as ‘great fun’ and ‘really exciting trying all the different fruit’. William Sharp Robinson: “loved trying the smoothies”. To round up the morning we had cake bingo using fruit and vegetables to make the cakes which, Mick Brewster of Sycamore Grange won guessing 7 out of the 9 cakes. It was a really successful event with positive feedback and about 60 people attended. It is hoped that there will be a similar event in the future. King Lear A group of our Y6 children performed at Honley High School in a joint production of King Lear. They have worked with other schools in Kirklees and the Royal Shakespeare Company over the past few months. The standard of all the performers was extremely high. Thanks, once again, to Mrs Apostolakis and the children of Y6.

Burial Ground Appeal We have worked out that the cost of keeping the burial ground in its present satisfactory state for petrol and oil alone (at its present price) is in the region of £200 per annum. It is very gratifying that to date the appeal has reached £295. We have therefore enough in hand for this year and a bit more for next year or any other expenses that can arise. The Fund is still open! Our sincere thanks therefore to our generous benefactors. As you will know Kevin Littlewood does all the mowing and work for love and the response to the appeal is an encouragement to him to continue the good work. If there is anybody who would like to help him, he is generally there on a Friday morning at 10.00 am during the mowing season or he can be contacted at 7 West Avenue, Honley. There are a number of lighter jobs where people may be able to help, weeding some graves or clipping round headstones for example. One hazard Kevin has to face each time he cuts the Cremation Area are the glass vases and containers resting on top of the tablets. The strimmer is a powerful instrument and its blade slices any glass vase with consummate ease. It is for this reason that we encourage, please, the use of the vase set in the memorial tablet itself.

Report on the DCC Meeting held on 15th March
Thirteen members were present when the Vicar opened the meeting with a prayer. Guest, Canon Missioner Tony Macpherson attended and the first hour was given over to his observations on Mission as it affects churches like St Mary’s followed by questions arising from his remarks. Under Matters Arising there was still no candidate to take on the post of Verger and the Vicar agreed to place a job description in the Parish Magazine and publicise the vacancy in church. In his Treasurer’s Report Ian Walter explained that the accounts for 2010 were with the auditors before being presented at the Annual Meetings. A legacy of £7,500 had been received from an anonymous donor. Since most of the Transformational Plan Groups had not met since the last meeting of the DCC there was only a report from the Prayer and Spirituality Group which had been preparing the Lent Course. Under AOB the lack of nominations for PCC and DCC members to be elected at the Annual Meeting was discussed. Diana Kaye agreed to buy and present a container plant to Pauline and Kenneth Ellis for their new home as agreed at an earlier meeting. The Vicar gave details of the Easter Services.

There was no branch meeting in April but some of us attended the Lent course in the parish room. Andrea and I attended the MU council meeting at Dewsbury Town Hall on 23rd March. There were two guest speakers, Rev. Jonathan Greener talking about the proposed changes to Wakefield Cathedral and Mrs Elsie Clarke spoke about the work of the MU in Bradford Diocese. The Deanery meeting was held at St Michael and St Helens’ the following week and again Andrea accompanied me. Reports of both these meetings will be given at our next branch meeting. The Lady Day service was held at Newsome church and was led by Rev. Mildred Butterworth. Ten members from Honley attended and shared in a very special service with some lovely hymns, readings, prayers and a thought provoking address. The orders for 2012 diaries and calendars is due in at the end of May so please come prepared to the next meeting. Please do not make the task harder for Andrea by missing the deadline! Our speaker on May 3rd will be Mrs Jean Thurman who is a Vice-President of Wakefield Diocese with special responsibility for Halifax and Huddersfield areas. Together with her husband she was responsible for producing the “In Touch” magazine during the previous triennial. Please join us if you can, I am sure that it will be an interesting evening. Visitors are always welcome. “May Merriment” is an MU event to replace the “June Jamboree” of previous years. It is an evening of information, entertainment and fun and this year it will take place in Birchencliffe Parish Hall. There will be a guest speaker and choir. The cost is £5 including refreshments. More details will be available at our next meeting. A reminder that in June our meeting will be replaced by a Coffee Day to raise money for the work of M.U. and in particular A.F.I.A (away from it all) holidays. More details later. Many thanks to all our members and friends who help in the work of Mothers’ Union.

AD 18 young people enjoyed a ‘green evening’ at our last meeting at St George’s Church. The theme was NURTURE and we discussed the importance of nurturing one another and the importance of helping each of us to grow happily, with encouragement and blossom. Each child planted seeds in a pot to take home and hopefully nurture?
AD’s garden had a makeover designed and created with the help of Stuart Coldwell. (Don’t forget to look at it when next at St. Georges). Caroline Lee worked with an enthusiastic group creating an Easter garden for the back of church, complete with 3 wooden crosses and a tomb. St. Georges Day is approaching and we practiced a new song to sing on the day, ‘We all need Encouragement’ as well as the children’s favorite, ‘You are a star just the way you are’. We were also pleased to welcome Dean Henry who enlightened the children to the custom of Maundy Money. Amazingly we were celebrating our 9th birthday and finished the meeting with a chocolate birthday cake which was delightfully devoured, and the plate scraped clean! The evening went quickly and fun was had by all. Many thanks to Verena who stood in for Kate.
