I am writing this the day after Carols by Candlelight at St Mary’s – held on a Sunday for the first time in many years, and a very popular occasion! I spoke on John 1.14: ‘The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.’ It would make a good verse for 2015. First, it tells us of an historical event: God became a man, and lived on earth. The year reminds us of that, for it is ‘AD 2015’ – the ‘year of our Lord’. Secondly, it tells us of the purpose of that historical event: that we might see his glory and come to understand his eternal significance. If he is God, we must take his claims seriously. And thirdly, it tells us of his grace and truth: God’s undeserved favour was shown to us in the death of Jesus Christ, and he was true to his character, for it was there that the price of your sin and mine was paid. Every year there are news stories to remind us of the effects of sin. In 2014 we heard about Jimmy Savile’s revolting abuse of hundreds children, not least at the BBC, the Report into which is delayed because of the number of witnesses coming forward. From Rotherham we heard about the systematic abuse of girls at the hands of evil men. And as 2014 closes, stories of astonishing poverty here in England are beginning to make their way into the media, mainly as a result of changes to the benefits system. It is hardly controversial to say that our society is messed up about sex and money. Societal confusion has personal effects. No one among us is free from sexual sin, for the Lord Jesus teaches that ‘anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart’ (Matthew 5.28). And the apostle Paul tells us that ‘the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil’ (1 Timothy 6.10). What wonderful news, then, that we have a Saviour who rescues us: Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God. In 2015, put your trust in him and so receive a completely fresh start. And pray for our nation and our world, that in 2015 many would bow the knee to Jesus.

Liam Beadle

A note from the Vicar

December 2014 Share Prayer

My God, I come to you in this new year, unknowing in the dark, the way unclear, and yet in faith I take my way with you

in certain trust that you will see me through. I bring to you the labours of my hands,

a supple will to bend to your commands, my span of years as you see fit to give, my love in good or ill while I shall live. I bring to you the soul you gave to me,

my hopes for all the days that are to be, my faithful worship in your holy place,

one thing I ask, that you will give me grace.

Anon

I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year,

’Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown’

And he replied, ‘Go out into the darkness and put your hand into the hand of God.

That shall be to you better than light and safer than a known way.’

So I went forth and finding the hand of God trod gladly into the night.

Minnie Louise Haskins (1875-1957)

Lord God, through your grace we are your

people, through your son you have redeemed us,

in your spirit you have made us for your own. We pray for all Christian people,

for those who teach and guard the faith. May the word of Christ dwell richly in our hearts

and knit us together in the bond of your love. May our lives bear witness to your glory in this

world, may our hands be ready to heal,

and our voices one with all your people to serve you with joy.

Amen

Christmas Street Market 2014 - what a great success!!! The 11th St Mary’s Christmas Street Market held on 6 December was a great success. The sun was shining, although it was crispy cold, and the sky was bright blue all day. There were burgers, hot soup, bacon sandwiches, coffee and mulled wine to warm us up – along with cakes, mince pies, cookies and lots of festive treats to tickle our taste buds. There were flowers, crafts, toys, cards, bric-a-brac, jigsaws – and a whole lot more for sale on more than 35 stalls. Inside the church, the fabulous Emley Moor Brass Band, the amazing Honley Male Voice Choir and the wonderful Honley Ladies Choir entertained us during the day, and we were delighted by the very talented and fun Honley Samba Band to crown the day. A great atmosphere was evident as the community came together and all seemed to enjoy the day. Of course it was hard work – but somehow it was fun in the doing as we did it together and laughed throughout. We got to know each other better and made new friends. That’s what it’s all about – and makes the work and the months of planning worth it. On top of that, more than £5,000 was raised towards the upkeep and ministry of St Mary’s. Well done all those involved! With a special thanks to Diana Kaye for managing the whole project and keeping us all to task. See you all next year on the 5th December! Book it in your diary now!!! There are some photos available on the church website - on the ‘Christmas Street Market’ page.

From Sandra Dean - I would like to thank the ladies who gave of their time to prepare for the Street Market, and help on the stall. This year the stall raised £252.50 not quite as much as last year, but we did our best. Also a big thank you to those who have given a donation towards the Christmas flowers. On behalf of the Honley and Huddersfield Branch of Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research I am writing to say thank for allowing us to have a stall at the recent Street Market. We made £301 for our charity and a good time was had by all. The added bonus of having names on tables was much appreciated and allowed us to get our stall set up much quicker. Although the day was cold it brought the crowds out and in our opinion it was one of the best markets we have attended (and we have been there since the first). Again the atmosphere up the street and throughout the village was tremendous – everyone with a smile on their faces and the Christmas lights added a final touch. On behalf of all – many thanks for all the hard work that goes along with putting an event on – and give yourselves a pat on the back for another successful day. Looking forward to 2015. Valerie Akroyd (Hon.Sec.)

Operation Christmas Child 2014 - A fantastic response from all! May I begin by wishing you all a very happy and Healthy 2015. The shoe box appeal was a great success once again with a total of 63 boxes filled by church members (37 St Mary’s; 10 St George’s) and others (16). Additional donations of money to help with transportation amounted to £65. The ‘knitters’ excelled themselves with plenty of colourful hats and gloves. Thank you to everyone. The number of boxes leaving Meltham this year was well over 13,000with the first 8,000 going to the Philippines and the rest going to Belarus.

Elaine Shaw Below is an extract from a letter received from the Area Coordinator - Judith Powell. “Thank you SO much for the shoeboxes collected for Operation Christmas Child. This is such an exciting campaign, and incredible to think that every one of these gifts you gave us will bless a child somewhere and bring amazing joy into their life. From Meltham the shoeboxes will be packed into large outer cartons and loaded onto lorries or containers to go abroad. Every lorry contains about 10,000 shoeboxes and we hope to be able to send about 100 lorries from the UK. Thank you for your support and participation.

A festive celebration was held at the Christmas event on Wednesday 3 December, in church. Members and MU friends enjoyed a sherry reception and delicious faith supper, followed by table games and traditional carol singing to round off the evening. The next meeting is our ‘Wave of Prayer’ for the new Diocese, to be held on Friday 9 January at 9.30 am. The service will be a short reflection on the old and new link dioceses, with readings and some music. All are very welcome. The Programme for 2015 reverts in February to the usual pattern of meetings usually held on the first Wednesday of the month (with exceptions for special events and outings). Spare printed programmes are available on the notice board at the back of church and events are published on the St Mary’s website. The speaker at the February meeting on Wednesday 4th February at 7.30 pm in church will be Jen Frost, talking about “Cocoon” - a project concerned with self-esteem and emotional health in girls and young women. Do join us if you can, all our meetings are open and visitors are welcome.

Annual subscriptions are due as of 1 January 2015. Please remit £18.50 cash or cheque (payable to St Mary’s Honley Branch Mothers’ Union) to Alison Dean as soon as possible, if you’ve not already done so. Many thanks to all those who have paid subs in advance and promptly.

Advance notice of 2015 Diocesan Quiet Day Wednesday 18 March, 11 am–3.00 pm, at St James’ Baildon. There is a communion service at 10.00am which you are welcome to attend. The reflection will be based on the Walking with Hannah material, led by Carol Daley from Leeds Diocese. Please bring a packed lunch, drinks will be provided. Cost £5.00. This day is open to Members right across the new Diocese so places will be limited. Lifts will be available for those arriving by train. Please contact Elaine Swinhoe ASAP if you wish to go: 01484 429767.

Happy New Year to everyone.

Alison Dean

On 21 December, St Mary’s church became very messy for a few hours! There was

glitter in abundance, as well as paint, glue, cardboard and lots more sticky stuff!! Wonder-ful pictures, models, cardboard houses and col-lages were created. 85 people (43 children and their parents/

grandparents) and several helpers from differ-

ent churches in Honley gathered to learn more

about Jesus through crafts, songs, stories and

celebration time. All had great fun and there

was a wonderful, informal atmosphere with

much laughter and lots of good conversations.

Relationships are important – and many were

formed and developed during that time. We

thought about what it might mean to be home-

less at Christmas.

We learned about the first people who saw Je-

sus – the angels, the shepherds, the wise men.

We ate a scrumptious meal of jacket spuds,

ratatouille, cheese, beans and pizza together –

finished off with biscuits we had decorated in

our craft timeWithout doubt, this was a fun time

and all were left wanting more.

Watch this space for more Messy Church gath-

erings. This is brought to

Honley by all the

Churches working to-

gether. We all believe

that Jesus loves all of us

and want to make him

better known to everyone, so that all may see

the wonder of his love and come to know him

for themselves.

New Diocese of West Yorkshire and the Dales celebrates its first Christmas

This was the first Christmas as the new diocese of West Yorkshire and the Dales. A short film has been made to celebrate some of the good work done within the diocese to bring the wonder of Christmas to churches, schools, communities and hospitals. To view the film visit: http://youtu.be/6iSuQFHnd6E

News from

Yorkshire welcome for the First Bishop of Huddersfield

Bishop Jonathan Gibbs was officially welcomed to the start of his ministry as the First Bishop of Huddersfield in November 2014. The service of installation, which some of us were privileged to attend, was led by the Bishop of Leeds the Rt Revd Nick Baines who greeted Bishop Jonathan and his wife and welcomed them both to the Dio-cese and to the Huddersfield Episcopal Area be-fore he was greeted warmly by civic leaders and faith representatives from across the region, in-cluding the Lord Lieutenant of West Yorkshire, Dr Ingrid Roscoe and the Mayor of Kirklees, and the Deputy Mayor of Calderdale.

He gave his first sermon as the First Bishop of Huddersfield on the theme of hope.

He said: As I take up this wonderful new role as Bishop of Huddersfield in the Diocese of West Yorkshire and the Dales, I pledge myself to working with you, here in Kirklees and Calderdale and across the Diocese, to build up the life of the Church and to serve the cause of the coming of God’s reign of justice and wholeness and peace; so that God’s way of doing things, where people flourish and are enabled to become all that they can be, is seen just a little bit more amongst us and around us. We cannot build the kingdom of God here on earth – that is a dangerous deceit, whether in a religious or a secular form – but we can plant seeds of hope and in due time see trees blos-som and grow, whose leaves are for the healing of both people and nations. We can work to-gether across our communities to nurture the vision of people reconciled and living together, sharing in the purpose of human flourishing and of the renewal of creation itself.

Bishop Nick Baines on 4 January 2015: Sunday Programme: (between 7.10 and 8.55 am) 7 January 2015: Thought for the Day: (approximately 7.45 am)

Follow Bishop Nick on Twitter @nickbaines

Or view his blog at: http://nickbaines.wordpress.com/

Our job, as members of the Christian Church, is not to play down what God has done in Jesus Christ, but to live and to tell the hope that we have in him.

You can read Bishop Jonathan’s sermon in full at: www.westyorkshiredales.anglican.org where you can also listen to Bishop Nick’s Christmas Message

AD ‘Angel Voices Ever Singing’. Well maybe not quite but this AD started with some enthusiastic singing of Christmas Carols. Well done children and many thanks to Noel who came along to accompany on the organ. So that was the ‘Singing’ which was quickly followed by the ‘Angels’. The children worked hard to create some fabulous angels following Sue’s directions and the ‘one she had made earlier’. We are sure they were much admired in Church over the Christmas period. The next AD is Thursday 8 January 2015. AD is open to all children aged 8 to 12 years. Contact Sue on 686642 or Kate 663678 for more information.

With all good wishes for 2015. The AD Leaders

Street Market – St. George’s Church Stall Many thanks to all who supported this stall –those who found success in a bottle of wine and those whose good humour triumphed despite unwrapping a bottle of water! The stall made £235 for Church funds. ‘Greetings and Garlands ‘ It would have been nice to have had more customers but garlands, cards and a painting were sold, coffee and mincepies were consumed and the ‘chance to chat’ was much enjoyed. Over £100 was raised for Church funds – so thank you to all who came along.

Church Bloopers Evening massage - 6 p.m. The Minister would appreciate it if the ladies of the congregation would lend him their electric gir-dles for the pancake breakfast next Sunday morning. The congregation is asked to remain seated until the end of the recession. Low Self-Esteem Support Group will meet Thursday at 7 to 8:30 p.m. Please use the back door. The third verse of our final hymn will be sung without musical accomplishment. For those of you who have children and don't know it, we have a nursery downstairs. The Rev. Merriwether spoke briefly, much to the delight of the audience. The Minister will preach his farewell message, after which the choir will sing, "Break Forth Into Joy." Remember in prayer the many who are sick of our church and community. The junior church will be presenting Shakespeare's Hamlet in the church basement on Friday at 7 p.m. The congregation is invited to attend this tragedy. Bring and Share supper: Prayer and medication to follow. Don't let worry kill you off - let the church help.
