The Pope’s Visit I write this on 10th September the day after Mary and I have received our tickets to attend the service in Westminster Abbey when Pope Benedict comes on Friday, 17th September. I also had the good fortune to attend Canterbury Cathedral when Pope John Paul came in 1982. I shall never forget his dramatic entry with Archbishop Runcie through the chancel screen, the silence of the occasion only broken by the serial clicking of numerous cameras like a flock of birds in flight. Those were the heady days of an apparent resurgence of the Roman Catholic Church in England to be followed by the popularity of the much beloved, charismatic Archbishop of Westminster, Cardinal Basil Hume, formerly Abbot of Ampleforth. He became for a while the nation’s most respected Christian leader. Times have changed and the dark shadows of clerical abuse have darkened the catholic sky. Countries such as Ireland face uncertainty with very few priests in training. The Anglican Communion has its problems too, with controversies about the ordination of women as priests and bishops and dioceses too are faced by serous financial shortage. A parish I served near York is threatened to have its church closed because there is just no money. Every church has its problems, but a new spirit seems to be abroad. More and more Christians are recognising not so much what divide us, but what we share in common. Co-operation is the order of the day. A Lenten course in one part of this diocese is organised by Roman Catholics and Anglicans with warm invitations extended to Christians of other traditions. No longer is there an expectation that one church has to submit to another. We may differ in traditions, in worship, in church government, but we respect our differences. We recognise and celebrate our common faith in Jesus, Son of God, the Saviour.

Dean Henry writes...

Page 4: Honley with Brockholes Parish Magazinebtckstorage.blob.core.windows.net/site887/Mag 2010/Oct 10 final.pdf · Priest, an inspirer of the Oxford Movement. Both Catholics and Anglicans

There can be no better setting for the celebration of our common faith than Westminster Abbey; no more scriptural act of worship than Anglican Evening Prayer according to the Book of Common Prayer. Its structure and words are rooted in Christian tradition dating back centuries before the Reformation. We are privileged to be there on such an historic occasion . During his visit the Pope will go to Birmingham to declare Cardinal John Henry Newman a saint. John Henry was first an Anglican Priest, an inspirer of the Oxford Movement. Both Catholics and Anglicans are thankful for his life and his work. In times of darkness we may in his own words plead -

“Lead kindly light amidst the enclosing gloom A one step enough for me.”

In times of joy we may sing from the Dream of Gerontius,

Praise to the Holiest in the Height And in the depth be praise

In all his words most wonderful Most sure in all his ways.

The Common Fund: Supporting Mission and Ministry or Draining Our Finances?

Meeting our share of the Diocesan Common Fund is our largest cost. At just over £66,000 it represents over two thirds of the Parish Budget. The Diocesan Common Fund is the total cost of providing mission and ministry throughout the Wakefield Diocese. This cost is shared amongst all the Parishes using a formula that reflects both the cost of providing clergy and supporting them and the ability of each Parish to pay. In practical terms, the share we have paid has exceeded the actual cost of providing ministry within the Parish. For the first time ever, we have told the Diocese that the Parish, as a whole, is unlikely to pay its full share in 2010. Any underpayment will be carried forward to future years. This decision has not been taken lightly. Supporting mission and ministry beyond the boundaries of our own Parish is an integral part of our Christian faith. The overall finances of the Diocese depend on Parishes meeting their obligations. This financial inter-dependency enables the Diocese to provide paid clergy in areas where this would not have been possible. However, the situation with our own Parish finances, and the need to replace the heating system at St Mary’s, have made this decision inevitable. As our financial outlook shows no sign of improving, this dilemma over the Common Fund is likely to persist into future years. We must all think and pray about what we can do. Please ask if you need any help or advice on any aspect of giving.

Operation Christmas Child

As we say farewell to summer we start thinking of Christmas and Operation Christmas Child. This year the shoeboxes from this area are going to Bosnia, a very cold place in the winter so I am told. So lots of hats, scarves and gloves will be needed. Shoeboxes and leaflets will be available in both churches at a later date. For anyone who doesn’t want to fill a shoebox perhaps you would like to donate any of the following: pens, pencils, rubbers, paper, toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, facecloths. They will all be put to good use. I have also been informed that last year there was a shortfall of almost £10,000 to pay for transportation costs of said boxes. So if you would rather donate £2.50 to help with that it would be appreciated. I know things are difficult for all of us at the moment as everyone is asking for money, but just a little help goes an awful long way. You have all been so generous in the past for which we are truly grateful. The campaign dates are as follows:

1st - 18th November (and maybe a week or so after that) Monday - Friday 12.30 pm - 7.30 pm

Saturday 9.00 am - 12 noon at St James Church, Meltham.

Anyone who would like to help with the checking of the boxes will be made very welcome, they are a friendly bunch. Just a little more information: Samaritans Purse who run Operation Christmas Child are working at the moment with the Americans in the flooded areas of Pakistan.

Report on the DCC Meeting held on August 17th

Fourteen members of the DCC were present when the Vicar opened the meeting with a prayer. Under Matters Arising it was agreed that an appeal should be made for more volunteers to help with the cleaning in church and the Parish Room. Ian Walter’s Treasurer’s Report contained little that was new from the previous month with a forecast deficit for this year in the region of £15,000 (including the shortfall on our contributions to the Common Fund and the deficit carried forward from 2009). This can be covered by using our share of the accumulated interest on the Trust Fund but assuming a similar situation in 2011 this Trust Fund interest would run out in 2012 and St Mary’s will become effectively “bankrupt”. Considerable discussion led to a proposal that some strategy for tackling the problem is required now and that the Finance & Property Committee be asked to produce a plan of action to be reported back to the DCC at their November meeting. Pat Green added that there was a need to prioritise our areas of expenditure and this was added to the remit for the Finance & Property Committee to consider. Reports from the Five Transformational Plan Groups were presented and included a progress report on the plans to replace the boiler and heating system in St Mary’s, a report from the Sub-Committee responsible for considering the future of the Parish Room and a number of suggestions from the Community Group to encourage more people to visit church via various events like concerts etc. Under Any Other Business:

• John Dean asked that a central location be provided where a list of all activities in church is recorded for general information and to avoid clashes.

• The Secretary was asked to write expressing thanks to Kevin Littlewood for his supervision of the people on Community Service who have been working in the Burial Ground.

• Clive Green, Giving Officer, had samples of the offertory cards to be used by those whose offerings are made by Standing Order and who wish to place the cards on the plate at Sunday Services.

Men's Society The Men's Society Annual General Meeting commenced with a Said Eucharist in Church. Our thanks to our vicar Rev David Barnes for leading our act of worship. The meeting was held in the Book Room and a programme for the year was decided. A list of speakers was agreed upon. Dates for the meetings and social events were accepted. The officers for the year 2010/2011 were nominated and accepted unanimously. Bill Kemp is the chairman and John Ambler is the secretary/treasurer.

Church and Parish Room Cleaning You will recall that following the retirement of Kenneth Ellis the DCC accepted the generous offer of John and Pauline Adams who volunteered to organise the cleaning for a trial period of three months. The DCC have now extended the trial period for a further three months. John and Pauline are looking for any support from other volunteers who are willing to help in this essential task. Carol Hirst and Shirley Mitchell have already rallied to the cause. If you can give John and Pauline some of your time, however small, please ring them on 663510 or speak to them in Church. They will be very pleased to hear from you.

Clive Green

Pastoral Care Group

We continue to meet monthly for prayer and every few weeks to discuss pastoral matters. Our aim is for those who attend our church and those in the wider community to receive a visit if they are lonely, ill or in need. Please help us to help others by letting us know of anyone who would appreciate a visit.

Many thanks to members and friends for supporting the MU Literacy Fund by purchasing quiz sheets. At the time of writing over £50 has been raised. There was no evening meeting in September but a group met in church for the annual Wave of Prayer Service. Thank you to all who helped and supported this event. By the time this magazine is issued, the Coffee Morning will have taken place – again many thanks to everyone for your support. If you were unable to attend and would like to see our selection of Christmas and Greetings cards they will be available at our October meeting. Beryl Smith, known to most of you as the former Head of our Infant and Nursery School, will be speaking at our meeting on October 6th. This starts at 7.30 pm. In November we are having a “Songs of Praise” organised by Jean Chadwick with the help of Jennie Waind. Forms are available for your requests. The MU Council meeting takes place on Wednesday, October 13th at Batley Town Hall at 10.00 am for 10.30 am. Please join us for any or all of these events. Visitors are always welcome.

Pat Green, Branch Leader

Have you two hours to spare once a month? The Book Shop, in the Parish Room is looking for a couple more volunteers to cover the opening hours, particularly on Saturday afternoons. The bookshop raises fund for Outreach projects and general church funds. If you are interested please see Cliff Green or contact him on 664277.

The Children's Society The annual collection from boxes and donations amounted to £568. Many thanks for your continued support of this Church based charity which does much to help children and young people who have difficult lives. If anyone would like a box, please contact me.

West Riding Woodcarvers West Riding Woodcarvers have almost completed their latest group project; two panels depicting scenes from the First and Second World Wars. They will be on display at Halifax Town Hall from 25th October until 29th October and at the Parish Church in Huddersfield from 1st November until 7th November, before being taken to their permanent home in the Royal Armouries in Leeds. There are 95 separate carvings and a detailed booklet will be on sale (at both the previews and the Armouries) explaining the background surrounding the project. All proceeds from the sale of the booklet will go to The Forget-Me-Not Trust.

John Dean

Baby and Toddler Group

Mums and other carers are welcome to join us with their babies and toddlers on any Thursday between 1.30 pm and 3.30 pm. The time has changed slightly at the request of the Mums. The group is run by the Mums but there is always a Mothers’ Union or Church Member present to prepare refreshments and cope with any problems. We are few in number but the Mums enjoy the informal atmosphere, they can come and go as they please. For the first time this year by popular request we stayed open throughout the school summer holidays. It is not necessary to come for the whole session or even every week – a warm welcome is assured for everyone.

News from ‘the Blounts’ Exactly a year has passed since we left Honley and we thought it would be good to send a few words for the Parish Mag. Life is really good for us and we hope it is for you, too. God has blessed us with a beautiful bungalow in a lovely area. We are able to visit our family much more easily (and what is even better is that they are able to visit us more often). Church is very exciting with inspiring services and lots of outreach into the community. Just the other day I (Anne) was looking for a book and decided it must be one that I had left on the bookshelf * in St Mary's. That got me to wondering about you all, and whether any of you had borrowed any of the books or if they were just sitting there collecting dust (oh! - of course not - the cleaning team wouldn't let that happen!!). I decided to write and say "Hello" from us both and also to issue a challenge to you to read some of the books if you haven't already. One that I would particularly recommend is "The Shack" by Wm Paul Young. I am just about to read it for the fourth time - not something I usually do with books, but this one has had such a profound effect on my life that I just can't get enough of it. It begins with a terrible tragedy, but for me it is a beautiful picture of how God is with us in the very worst possible situations, whatever they may be for each one of us, and that He will be to us exactly what we need Him to be at those points in our lives. It paints a wonderful, exciting picture of God our loving Father, Jesus our Saviour and Friend, and the Holy Spirit our Enabler and Helper. Read it for yourself and let me know what you think.

Love and blessings in Jesus' name,

Godfrey and Anne Blount.

(* There is a small collection of books located in the side chapel under the Mothers’ Union banner - these are available for anyone to borrow)

AD A very successful meeting was held on Thursday 9th September when the young people enthusiastically dyed t-shirts in the church grounds. The final results provided a vivid splash of colour and some very striking t-shirts. With 26 young people it was a busy evening but the weather was in our favour as most of the tasks could be done outside. The next AD will be held on Thursday 14th October 6.30pm to 8.00pm. Religious Studies A-Level grows in popularity This past summer’s A-level results saw the seventh consecutive year-on-year increase in the number of students taking Religious Studies A-level, with a total increase of 47.3 per cent in the five years since 2004. Church educationalists interpret the continued increase as further evidence that young people are interested in exploring religious perspectives on the big questions in life, and in studying how different moral and cultural frameworks shape people's understanding of the world around them. The growing popularity of Religious Studies has been called one of post-16 education's ‘best kept secrets’. As one clergyman said: “It's rather an inconvenient fact for those who seek to portray the world in purely secular terms, and who like to suggest that young people have no interest in religion.”

OTHER ITEMS

Bible Sunday – 24 October Thousands of people in Tanzania are now reading the Bible for the first time, thanks to Bible Society’s work to put God’s Word into their own language. For years, 33 year-old farmer Josephine Mkala-Mungi, had to use a Bible written in Swahili, but now she has been set free to read the New Testament in Kikagulu, her mother tongue. ‘It feels as if God is my best friend because he is now speaking to me directly,’ she said. For this year’s Bible Sunday, on 24 October, the Bible Society will be asking churchgoers across the UK to support Bible translation work in Tanzania and to think about how the Bible’s message can bring new–found freedom to those who read it. In Tanzania some 56 per cent of Josephine’s tribe, which numbers a third of a million people, don’t speak the national language, Swahili. Even more can’t read it. So, the Bible has literally been a closed book to them. Bible Society’s translation work has changed all that. Translator Michael Nhonya spent four years working on the new Bible. ‘This is great,’ he said. ‘To finally hear and read it feels like I’m in heaven. It feels like Jesus is speaking in the synagogue, only he’s speaking here. It means that Christianity will grow here.’ You can support Bible Society’s translation work in Tanzania by visiting: www.biblesociety.org.uk/biblesunday2010

Flu germs everywhere With the flu season approaching, be aware - flu viruses travel easily. When someone sneezes, the virus can be carried the length of a double-decker bus, while a cough can infect anyone within about a metre. Flu viruses also live happily on door handles, lift buttons, phones, and shared towels, for up to two days. Medical experts offer some very simple tips to avoid germs:

• Build yourself up. Eat a well-balanced diet with all the food groups included. Don’t binge diet, as it will weaken your immune system.

• Keep very clean. Wash your hands with soap and warm water,

on both sides, scrubbing under nails. Carry alcohol gels if you can’t get to a tap. Avoid touching your face, so your own hands won’t infect you.

• Don’t let your own germs get away: cover your mouth and nose

with a disposable tissue when you cough or sneeze, bin the tissue, and wash your hands again.

Flu vaccinations are available at your GP surgery for all adults over 65 years of age, and all those regardless of age who have chronic conditions which put them ‘at risk’ e.g. diabetes, COPD, asthma, heart/liver/kidney disease, immunosuppressed patients and pregnant women. Contact your surgery to make an appointment.

The children were lined up in the cafeteria of a Catholic primary school for lunch. At the head of the table was a large pile of

was a sign, “Take all you want. God is watching the apples.”
