I am writing this on the first anniversary of my installation as Vicar, so am in a somewhat reflective mood. I am very grateful to those of you who have been warm and kind to me in so many ways during my first year as an incumbent. Generosity combined with commitment to the gospel has been the hallmark of many of you, and for that I am more grateful than I can possibly express. In his letter to the Philippians, the apostle Paul writes of ‘forgetting all that lies behind me, and straining forward to what lies in front’ (3.13). At the Annual Parochial Church Meeting, I spoke of three ways in which God calls his Church to grow. First, God calls us to grow in depth: as we hear God speak in Scripture, God forms and reforms his Church. Secondly, God calls us to grow in breadth: as we proclaim the good news of the kingdom, men and women are drawn by God’s grace to put their trust in him. Thirdly, God calls us higher: at the Eucharist, God raises us to heaven and feeds us by faith with the body and blood of his Son, given for our salvation. As we look forward to the year ahead, please pray for our parish to be increasingly biblical, missional, and worshipful, that we may better take part in God’s mission to Honley and Brockholes. We also welcome among us new office-holders: as I write, that is Beverley Playle as churchwarden at St Mary’s, and Joan Oldfield as churchwarden at St George’s. Thank you to them. I pray that they will be richly blessed as they exercise this ministry among us. I often return to a short hymn by Joseph Hart, a London clergyman of the eighteenth-century. It is not in our hymn books, but it is number 30 in the Anglican Hymn Book: How good is the God we adore, our faithful, unchangeable Friend! His love is as great as his power, and knows neither measure nor end! ’Tis Jesus, the first and the last, whose Spirit shall guide us safe home; we’ll praise him for all that is past,

Share Prayer

Sometimes it is hard to pray because the problems of the world, the church both nationally and locally, and our more personal concerns, fill our hearts and minds. At such times it can help to use words of a chorus or hymn. The combination of words and music can reach deeper and further than words alone.

Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me. Break me, melt me, mould me, fill me;

Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.

If I sing this (in my head) often enough it helps me to be in the presence of God. Other hymns which may help are ‘Breathe on me breath of God’ and ‘Be still my soul’ (my Dad’s favourite). I came across the following hymn in the front of All Hallows Church service book when I attended the MU Lady Day Service; what a lovely way to start a service. I first heard it sung, unaccompanied, by the Brothers at Mirfield Community of the Resurrection.

Come, Holy Ghost, our souls inspire, And lighten with celestial fire. Thou the anointing Spirit art,

Who dost Thy seven-fold gifts impart.

Thy blessed unction from above Is comfort, life, and fire of love.

Enable with perpetual light The dullness of our blinded sight.

Anoint and cheer our soiled face

With the abundance of Thy grace. Keep far our foes, give peace at home: Where Thou art guide, no ill can come.

Teach us to know the Father, Son,

It was announced on 18th May that Mrs D Griffiths had resigned as St Mary’s Church Warden. There will be another Annual Meeting of Parishioners on Tuesday 17th June at 7.30 pm to elect a Church Warden. Nomination forms are available for those interested in the position.

At the April branch meeting, the Revd Anita Raggett, gave an interesting talk about her work as a University Chaplain. There is a lot of coffee and tea making involved and consequently much washing up - but this is where some of the more valuable conversations with students take place. The audience were interested to hear some statistics about the Huddersfield University learning population which dispelled some of the misconceptions we may have had about ‘typical students’. June is a very good time to start planning for the new year - so the order forms for 2015 diaries and calendars are now here and need to be sent off by the end of the month! Please see Andrea or Alison as soon as possible if you would like either a diary (£3.80), year planner (£2.80), or calendar (£1.30). They are always of very good quality and arrive in the Autumn time. At the branch meeting on Wednesday 4th June at 7.30 pm in church, Elaine Swinhoe (Wakefield MU Faith and Policy Co-ordinator) will be the speaker. This promises to be a thought provoking evening - do join us. Transport arrangements are underway for the July Lunch Outing to the Wetherby Whaler on Wednesday 2nd July. Please contact Andrea or Bev as soon as possible if you have not already put your name on the list to go. Please also put the annual Mothers’ Union fundraising Coffee Morning in your diaries, which will be held on Thursday, 21st August in the Parish Room. The focus this year is the Mothers’ Union ‘Wheels Appeal’ - enabling Development Co-ordinators all over the world to bring MU programmes and mission to isolated families. This work at grass roots is proven to transform lives, and funds enable staff to make journeys faster and more safely.

Cycle Race The international Cycle Race passing through the village on Sunday 6th July will give rise to many events being organised in Honley and surrounding villages in celebration of the race. St Mary’s has planned the following: Wednesday 2nd July 5.00 – 6.00 pm Prayer Gathering in church This will focus specifically on prayers for all the village and for safety and success with all the various village ventures for TdF. Drinks and nibbles afterwards. Everyone is invited. Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th July Church open 10.00 am - 4.00 pm both days for refreshments provided by the Mothers’ Union and toilet facilities. Street Market organised by Business Association both days. Sunday 6th July In order to ease problems with travelling, there will be a said Communion at St Mary’s at 9.00 am to replace the usual services at 8.00 am and 9.30 am. (No services at Brockholes). Principal service of the day at St Mary’s at 6.30 pm “Hymns and Pimms” (soft drinks also available). This will be a celebratory service for all the community - in the style of Songs of Praise - to bring to a conclusion what we are sure will have been a fabulous weekend.

News from Honley Infant and Nursery School The Spring term at Honley Infant and Nursery School was as busy as ever. In January we were delighted to take part in a Christingle Service in St Mary’s Church. Many of our parents accompanied us to the Church and all of our full-time children were able to take part. Mrs K Atkinson, our Nursery Teacher and Assistant Head, led a short service in school for our part-time children. In February we had our SIAMS Inspection (Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools). The inspection was a rigorous process but we were delighted to be judged as an Outstanding Church School for the second time. During March we were very proud of our children who performed at out of school venues. Our after school Zumba club took part in the Strictly Pennine Dance Festival at The Lawrence Batley Theatre and our Drama group led by Mrs N Carr and Mrs H Tyler performed an act from A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Honley High School. You may also have seen our choir led by Mrs M Clarkeson-Jones when they sang at the Mother’s Day Service in St Mary’s Church. At the end of the Spring term we celebrated Easter by holding an Easter Egg Bingo in our school hall. We also led an Easter Service in St Mary’s Church which was very well attended by parents, grandparents, governors and friends of the school. Many of the congregation joined us in school for coffee and hot cross buns following the service. More recently you may have seen our children out and about investigating features of the village and sampling some of the facilities including the Post Office, the Co-op and the café. We are now looking forward to a very busy summer term ahead and to preparing our year 2 children for their transition to Junior School.

News from Honley Junior School Considering that this is only a 4 week half term we have crammed a lot in, for example a visit from Ofsted, trips, sports events, SATs and all our usual hard work. Ofsted arrived with us the third day back after our Easter break. Pupils and staff worked really hard and we are looking forward to receiving their report soon. Several pupils have been involved in sporting activities this term. We have had some year 6 pupils play football and they came 2nd overall in the league. Some pupils took part in a cricket competition and they came 2nd in their games too. Many pupils participated in the Neiley Races on the 7th May and everyone did their best and represented our school well. Hopefully the next race won’t be as wet. All year 4 children visited Hope Bank Works to learn different things like drama, art, music and lots of other creative things. They took part in a work shop which included making puppets, designing backgrounds and making music. They had an amazing time and have produced lots of fantastic work back in school related to their visit. We enjoyed watching 4H’s family assembly which showed off some of their super work. During 11th - 15th May the year 6 pupils have been doing their SATS. They worked really hard and are pleased it is over now! Ethos group would like to develop the wild area into a calm and spiritual space where pupils can go to think and express themselves. We are planning to have a willow artist to help create living willow shelters and sculptures but these have to be done in the winter months. In the meantime we plan to clear the overgrown plants and give the area a general tidy. We are looking for volunteers who would be willing to help us with this. If you or anyone you know can help us in any way with this please contact the school. We’ll let you know how work progresses.

AD Coffee Morning The AD young people helped to set up on Thursday night for the Coffee Morning but come Saturday conflicting interests of dancing, music, swimming, the Folk Festival etc. made it difficult for many to attend. However we had some great adult support and the final result meant we could send £65 to the Red Cross and a donation to Church funds. Many thanks to all who came along and contributed to this good cause.

St George’s Day - 27th

April 2014 The weather makes such a difference to this day and we were lucky that the forecast did NOT materialise and we enjoyed a dry and bright afternoon. The programme followed a similar pattern to previous years with children and adults all taking part in the parade, enjoying the barbecue, disguising themselves with painted faces and trying their hands at a number of outdoor games. (A number of these had been borrowed from Church House and were a successful addition to the fun). Our delightful 9 year old dragon was fit enough to make another appearance! It was lovely to work with the School in several ways but particularly in the afternoon’s Celebration of St George. The School and the parents can be proud of their young people who sang enthusiastically through all the hymns, the School’s own two singing items and the AD group’s vocal contribution. In addition quite a few read prayers which had been discussed at the previous AD meeting. Very many thanks to everyone who worked hard on the day and to those who came along and shared the worship and all the attractions on offer.

The May meeting did not have the same luck weather wise as the above so the planned outdoor programme and to be redrafted for indoors. Never-the-less the young people enjoyed working in teams and visiting 5 different activity venues in rotation. Thought was given to the work of the Red Cross and preparations made for the Coffee Morning. Tucking into barbecued sausages and burgers made a nice end to the evening. Thanks to Val for the games programme and John Clay for manning the barbecue in exceedingly inclement weather. Last meeting for this session June 12th.

Planting Poppy Seeds

It may have been a simple act in the middle of a school week but I could not help but be moved. Rosalind and I joined a small number of children, across the year groups from school, plus 2 members of staff to plant poppy seeds in 3 small beds in the School grounds and 3 small beds in the Church grounds. Packets of the seeds had been sent out by the Diocese of West Yorkshire and the Dales. The Revd Liam Beadle read the prayer, also circulated by the Diocese. This prayer has been pinned up inside church. Please try and take the opportunity to read it. As we mark 100 years since the beginning of the First World War we hope these seeds will flower as a fitting tribute to those who lost their lives. Poppies - so well known as having grown in ‘Flanders Fields’ and a lasting symbol of Remembrance.

Churchwardens at St George’s I want to give especial thanks to Margaret Kenworthy for being willing to continue to be a churchwarden, given her very many years of service. Margaret’s support has been invaluable to me over the past year, and her commitment to the life of the parish and of St George’s is inspiring. I do know that Margaret would be happy to pass on her skills and knowledge to anyone at St George’s who feels led to consider the rôle in the future!

Give one another confidence Sometimes we think that self-confidence is something you either have or don’t have, like a talent for music. But really, it is something that is either created in you, or destroyed, as you interact with other people. We can either intentionally encourage and empower other people, co-creating with them the confidence they need to pursue their hopes and dreams, or we can criticise and undermine them, or even cripple them with fears. We all know people who make us feel better about ourselves for having spent time with them, and also people who make us feel worse! Someone once said: ‘Life is not so much about what happens to people, but what happens between people.’ So – why not make an effort to aim to encourage people? Let them talk to you, and give them the opportunity to share their hopes and anxieties. As the saying goes: ‘A problem shared is a problem halved.’ The Bible puts it this way: ‘Encourage one another and build each other up.’ (1 Thess. 5:11)

We are from different backgrounds, with different experiences that form us. I can’t be just like somebody else and no one else can be just like me. Thank you for the gift of your Holy Spirit to speak and reveal your will to us in a way that is personal and unique. Help us to be open to receive him every day. Please go on filling us with your Spirit Lord, that we might be effective witnesses to Jesus our Lord and Saviour. In his name. Amen.
