Dear Friends
It was once asked, “If Christianity was a crime, would there
be enough proof to convict you?” If we are asked to prove
who we are or perhaps how tall we are or how heavy we weigh,
it would simply be a matter of finding the right documents or
getting out the tape measure or the weighing scales. The
answers to these questions are easily solved.
A mistake that is frequently made is to think that faith can
be measured by knowledge. In other words, the more you
know about God, the more faith you have. Although
knowledge about God is important, knowledge is not a proof
of faith.
There are many academics that profess great knowledge of
God but in fact have no faith in him at all. So to assume that
knowledge is a measure of faith would be a great mistake.
If knowledge is not a proof of faith, it might be suggested
that looks might be. The religious leaders of Jesus’ time, the
Pharisees, prided themselves with their “Holier than thou”
look. Their dress was impeccable and their religious
observations were immaculate. The Pharisees thought that
outside appearances were all important because they
assumed it reflected the amount of faith they had. Jesus
said they were like whitewashed tombstones. Their outside
appearance, as splendid as it was, did not reflect what they
were really like underneath. Looks, like knowledge, are not a
proof of faith.
The proof of faith is not a quantative element; it cannot
be measured by ordinary means, like checking a document
or reading a tape measure. Proof of faith can probably
best be expressed in two ways.
Firstly, faith is seen by our trust in God, allowing God to
be God. Trusting in his divine majesty and mercy. Knowing
that by putting our confidence in him, he will provide our
needs.
Secondly, proof of faith can be seen in the way in which
we act; in our prayer life, in our worship and in the works
that we do.
St. James in his letter states that faith without works is
dead, yet on the other hand Christians are not called
primarily to be social workers. The first and central act
of our faith is our relationship with God, reflected in our
worship and adoration of him.
Salvation can never be earned through our own efforts.
But the results of our salvation should be seen in the
works that we do. Proof of faith can be a subjective
matter, but when all is said and done, it will be through our
worship, our prayers, our kindness and generosity of spirit,
which will best prove the reality of our faith.
Yours in Christ’s service
David 2
Giving to a Need or Needing to Give?
Today we are confronted with a myriad of adverts on TV, radio, billboards and magazines promoting a better and more affluent lifestyle. Charities are also becoming equally professional with novel, imaginative and compelling ways of touching our hearts and inviting us to make a difference.
Against this background one might easily think - is it any wonder the Church is struggling to compete with its approach that seems to focus on ensuring the survival of an institution. If Christian giving is narrowly perceived as simply getting the money in to pay the bills, then it will always seem to be about parting reluctant givers from their money. A kind of tax on faith. A compulsory tip to God for spiritual services rendered, But Christian giving is much, much more dynamic than that. Our faith should nurture us as givers so we are not simply giving to a need – but more needing to give. Christians give because they know the grace of God poured out to them in Christ. Giving that speaks of all that we have received from God. Giving that is focussed on the mission and ministry of the Church, and on making a difference in the lives of people both now and in the future.
Please ask and we will be happy to help on any aspect of giving.

Report on the PCC Meeting held on May 18th
Twelve members of the PCC were present at St George’s Church. The Vicar opened the meeting with a celebration of a Celtic Eucharist service. In his Treasurer’s Report, Ian Walter presented figures for the first quarter of the year which showed a deficit resulting from major expenditure in the early part of the year as a result of paying insurance premiums etc. A letter had been sent to Wakefield explaining our possible inability to fully pay this year’s Common Fund (Parish Share) as this continues to rise and we are committed to maintaining our church buildings (St Mary’s boiler and heating system urgently needs replacing). Minutes from St Mary’s DCC meetings were formally tabled, although in the absence of a Secretary for St George’s DCC there were no minutes available here. The Vicar spoke about the difficulty of obtaining a Church Governor to serve at Brockholes Infant and Junior School. He proposed to widen the area of choice to include the whole parish in order to fill this important post. The Secretary had received a letter from Slimmers’ World explaining that they were moving from the Parish Rooms owing to lack of space and thanking the PCC for their hospitality over a number of years.

HONLEY NEWS
Men’s Society Our speaker in May was our own Rev David Barnes. We thank David for his very interesting and illuminating talk. He highlighted his life from his early schooldays in Derbyshire via his engineering career to his calling to the ministry. David mentioned that memories from the past are often triggered by the senses. In his case, the pit village with the distinct smell of the colliery and the sounds of the brass band were examples to illustrate the point. Many thanks for your talk David. It was much appreciated.
John Ambler
Christian Aid The final total raised by the Honley Churches amounted to £1,748. Many thanks to all our collectors who made this possible. Also, I wish to thank all the people of Honley who contributed generously to this total. I apologise to those of you who did not receive an envelope because we were short of personnel to deliver envelopes. I appreciate that not all people feel able to collect but I ask anyone who might be interested to help next year, please contact me in the early months of 2011. Many Thanks

It was with great sadness that we lost one of our most loved and respected members recently, Pat Lockwood. The number of M.U. members who attended her funeral service in church was a refection of how much she was respected and loved by us all. A few days later a number of us joined Lilian Tinker, an Indoor Member, as she celebrated her 90th Birthday. Lilian was Branch Treasurer for many years and still supports M.U. by her prayers and gifts. The church was a fitting venue for our June meeting when Pam Robins talked about how she became involved in Church Embroidery and accompanied her talk with OHP transparencies, photographs and samples of her work - including Altar Frontals, Stoles, Bishops’ Copes and M.U. Banners. Her sewing skills are matched by her enthusiasm and Christian faith which shines out in all her work. Thank you Pam! June was a busy month with members attending the Quiet Evening at St Michael and St Helen’s led by the Rev Margaret Browell and the Deanery Festival at All Hallows, Almondbury. It is always good to join in worship and prayer with members from other branches in the Deanery and to enjoy a chat with friends over coffee afterwards. Many thanks to those who provide transport on these occasions and to Beth for her organisation. Our next meeting will be on Wednesday 7th July, at 7.30 pm when we shall be celebrating “Fatherhood” – discussing how the role of fathers has changed over the years. Please come and join us.
Pat Green, Branch Leader
A prayer for those simply not interested! Lord, as all around are gripped with World Cup fever, bless us with understanding, strengthen us with patience and grant us the gift of sympathy if needed. Amen.

Mary Woodward RIP My friend Mary has been on our prayer list for the last year. Mary and I used to work together at Brackley Music School. She was also a very enthusiastic organist and Choir trainer at Brackley Parish Church where her husband, Canon Peter Woodward was Vicar. When Peter retired they moved to Northampton where he eventually became Sue Clarke's mentor as she trained as a Curate. Sadly Mary developed a brain tumour but remained very positive. Unfortunately we received the following from Peter on 24th May.
Mary at peace
Mary died this morning just after 5am. Yesterday Pentecost Sunday communion was brought from the church and Mary was awake enough at 10.30am for us to have a quiet service together and have a thankful prayer for our family and kind friends. After that Mary went to sleep and hardly woke up again. Late yesterday evening her breathing pattern changed but not as though death was so near. However there was a change at 4am and it was clear she did not have much longer to live. Our vicar Ian had left with me the holy oils and I said prayers and anointed her and stayed with her until she drew her last breath. Thank you again so much for your kindness and your prayers.

My Little Visitor A little blue tit looked in through my window today He perched on my windowsill as if to say “Thank you for the peanuts and the seeds That is all my little family needs Soon because of you we’ll have some chicks So thank you from the bottom of our hearts You helped to feed our feathered family” This little blue tit flew onto my windowsill And looked for a short while through the window at me! I was surprised to see him there That is all the reward I need I was so glad to be able to feed His little family.
Thank you God, for birds They are the nearest things to Angels With their little feathered wings. Mavis Seale
A D In spite of the chilly, wet spell of weather members of AD were able to enjoy a lively evening outside at their meeting on June 10th. Mrs Val Tipling put the children through their paces with a variety of team races. The grown ups were amazed at the skills of the youngsters as they enjoyed activities with hula hoops. Sue intrigued the children with her paper sculpture using coloured strips. The children then created their own sculptures which were joined together in a display demonstrating the importance of team work and reinforcing Val’s games. Those who attended went home looking forward to another games evening in the future! A D Meets again in September when we hope to welcome old and new members to our popular tie-dye evening run by Sue.

New local ‘Fairtrade’ shop You may be aware of a new shopping opportunity launched in Holmfirth recently, in the premises formerly known as the Toll House Bookshop. The Fair Traders Co-operative is a Co-operative with a difference, making a difference to local and global communities. With a running thread of accountability in all that they do; they ensure that all their products are sourced according to a set of clear guidelines. Their unique selling point is that every product they sell will have undergone their own sustainability assessment in terms of the environmental, social and economic impacts. They want their customers to be aware of the impact their purchases make across the supply chain. A community of nearly 400 Fairtrade supporting members have recently contributed nearly £100,000 to launch the business and they have recently started trading. How to boost your memory power If you learn something and want to remember it - take a break. Immediately. It has long been known that sleeping helps to consolidate memory by allowing the mind to sift through recently gained knowledge and ‘file ‘ it. But now it seems that even a short rest, while conscious, can help the brain sort and retain the information just gained according to scientists at New York University. Proverbs (18:15) observes: ‘The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge; the ears of the wise seek it out...” and once you’ve got the knowledge, have a short rest – and you’ll be more likely to remember it!

My Daily Check List
Am I consciously, or unconsciously creating the impression that I’m a better person than I really am? Do I laugh at the mistakes of others, revelling in their errors and misfortunes? Do I insist on having my own way? Is there a tendency for me to put others down, so I’ll be thought of more highly? Do I pass on to others what is told to me in confidence? Am I thoughtful in expressing thanks to people for what they’ve done for me, no matter how insignificant it seems? Am I a slave to dress, friends, work and habits? Am I self conscious, self-pitying and self-justifying? Did the Bible live in me yesterday? Did I disobey God in anything yesterday? Did I insist on doing something about which my conscience was uneasy? Do I handle discouragement well, or do I have to be coddled? Am I enjoying prayer? When did I last speak to someone about Christ? Is there anyone that I fear, dislike, disown, criticise or hold resentment toward? If so - what am I doing about it?
