Dear All,

We had enormously successful events in July – Brockholes Open

Gardens Event, St Mary`s Diamond Jubilee Flower Festival,

Street Market and Celebration Service,

Many congratulations to all who contributed in any way and

thank you so much to everyone for all your very hard work.

What you all do so generously is very much appreciated and we

thank God for you all.

On a personal note, Jenny and I will be away from the Parish

for the first three Sundays of September as we will be making

our annual pilgrimage to Christ Church Streatham, where our

daughter Sarah and family worship, in order to look after that

church whilst the vicar is on holiday.

It is quite a different, but very enjoyable experience because it

is a high church with bells and lots of incense and an

enthusiastic congregation of 200 to 300 who joyfully sing

praise to God. If you are going away in the next few weeks and

manage to attend worship in a different church, offer them our

greetings and bring a copy of their Church Magazine back with

you for us to look at.

I was reading St Matthew`s gospel the other day and a verse in

particular:

“Whoever has will be given more, and he will have an abundance.

Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from

him.” Matt. 13. 12

I have to admit that I`ve struggled with this verse over the

years, but I think the answer that has eluded me is in one word

– gratitude.

Gratitude operates through a universal law that governs our

whole lives.

You will have heard sayings like:-

“Whatever goes around comes around.” “You reap what you sow.” “You get what you give.”

In a sense, all these sayings are describing a principle of the

Universe discovered by Isaac Newton – “Every action has an

opposite and equal reaction.”

When we apply the idea of gratitude to Newton`s Law it says:

Every action of giving thanks always causes an opposite

reaction of receiving.

What you receive will be equal to the amount of gratitude

you`ve given.

Jesus often spoke about “Blessed are . . . . in other words

“Happy are . . .

I would add Blessed and happy are those who practice

gratitude, because when you practice gratitude you`ll

experience the magic of gratitude.

So be grateful, be happy and be blessed.

Dean Henry’s 55th

Anniversary - 24 June 2012 I was very touched by the many who came to St Mary’s to celebrate the 55th Anniversary of my being ordained priest. Sincere thanks to our friends in the parish for the kind gift of a book token and for the many cards and presents I received, which will take a while to acknowledge; to the churchwardens for their assistance; Michael Clarke and the choir for the music and especially for the anthem; to John and Pauline Adams, Gillian Greaves and Andrea Green for the catering, together with their many helpers on the day; to Sandra Dean and Andrea for the flowers; to the many members of my family and Huw Griffiths and Andrew Dean for their part in the service; to Andrew and Gwen for the fine service paper. My thanks too to my cousin, the Revd Michael Champneys, formerly vicar of Calow, near Chesterfield, for his masterly sermon describing my years as a priest. My special gratitude and thanks must go to Mary who masterminded not one but two receptions and herself planned and organised everything down to the smallest detail, and not made easy with her disability. I repeat what I have said on many occasions. If my looks belie my years that is because I have the good fortune to have Mary’s comfort, love and care.

The Parish Book of Remembrance This book records the names of those who have died whose family or friends wish them to be remembered in Church on the anniversary of their death. The Book is displayed in the Prayer Corner, open at an appropriate page each week. The names are published in the magazine on their anniversary of death. If you would like to enter the name of a close relative or friend who has died in the past few years, and lived in, or was associated with the Parish please complete a form available from Shirley Turner. The fee will be divided equally between the scribe who writes the entry and St Mary’s Church Development Fund.

Daily Bible Reading How easy do you find it to read the Bible every day? Would you find it helpful to have a resource that would make it easier? Well, we know we would! Having bible notes definitely helps in encouraging personal spirituality and in making the bible meaningful to us as individuals. So the Prayer and Spirituality group has been looking at different resources that are available and would be keen to hear from the congregation their ideas on these resources and any others they use/are aware of. We have put examples of different types of daily bible notes at the back of church, along with a comments sheet for you to note down your opinions. Have a look and see what you think. If you are interested in having notes of this kind, please also make a note of it on the sheet and we can send in a bulk order from the church.

Health and Safety The DCC is urgently looking for somebody who would be willing to undertake Health and Safety inspections of the Church and Parish Room. Comprehensive advice and help for this is available from the Diocese. Please see the Church wardens for more information.

Jubilee Weekend Many congratulations and thanks to everybody who contributed in any way to the success of our Jubilee Weekend. It was certainly a memorable event which could not have happened without the many hours of preparation and the help and co-operation of many. The flowers in St Mary’s were spectacular in their depiction of things royal - especially as they were all being supervised from the gallery by “ ‘im-an-er”. The displays really were a credit to their originators. The musical contributions were an added bonus and much enjoyed. The profit from the flower festival was £1,500.00. Saturday dawned fine, warmish but dry. What a difference this made to all the early risers who helped prepare the Street Market. While trade may have been a little slow in starting there was a steady flow of people all through the day and many of the stallholders reported that while they were not rushed off their feet they were quite happy with their day’s takings. Amazingly it was possible to buy Christmas Cards too…..in July! We managed to provide each stallholder with a gazebo to themselves and this did improve the appearance of the whole Street. The profit from the Street Market was a little under £1,500.00 On Sunday we held our Jubilee Commemorative Service amongst the floral displays in the presence of Deputy Lieutenant Major Siu Cheung on her first official visit to Honley. Dean Henry was the celebrant and the Archdeacon, Venerable Dr Anne Dawtry, was the preacher. The Choir started the service with a choral fanfare and everyone had a good opportunity to join in some traditional hymns finishing with the Old Hundredth arranged by Vaughan Williams in which Aaron Wood was the trumpet soloist. Vernon Briggs was the organist. The souvenir Order Of Service books were kindly printed and provided by Andrew and Gwen Schofield. So an enjoyable and memorable weekend when once again, the members of St Mary’s showed the community that we are still here and functioning and proved how successful we can be when we all work together. Report on St Mary’s DCC held on 1th June Twelve members were present. Chairman Clive Waind opened the meeting with a prayer. The minutes of the previous meeting were accepted. Under Matters Arising: work on redecorating the vicarage had started and the candleholder for votive candles had arrived and would be located for the present in the Lady Chapel. Clive Green’s Treasurer’s report included figures for the General Fund for the first quarter of the year. He also explained the reduction of 11% in our Common Fund assessment for 2012 which will make our contribution £47,054 for the year. Jane Wardman reported on two meetings of Deanery Synod. A working Party, including Graham Wardman, is being asked to ‘refresh’ the Deanery Plan once instructions have been received from the Bishop. There is also a scheme to start a website recording parish resources throughout the deanery. A report from the Re-ordering Sub-committee recommended that from the 4 alternative schemes put forward by our architect, the one connecting church to the parish room be accepted. This was passed unanimously. How the scheme will be financed will be addressed at a later date. An agreement between a neighbour and the Diocese for sale of the lower part of the vicarage garden with certain conditions attached was unanimously approved by the DCC. Finance and Property Committee

A proposal that HeatinGlobal be given the annual contract to

service the new heating system in church which they installed, was approved.

Renegotiation of our insurance cover for the church and parish

room, led to a proposal that we accept an excess liability for both buildings of £500 and was passed with 1 abstention.

A proposal that architect Stuart Beaumont be asked to produce

specifications for repairs to the church tower was passed unanimously.

To avoid confusion over works and repairs to buildings Kevin

Radford was appointed Clerk of Works. He should be informed of any repairs needing attention. A book in which to record any jobs needing attention is available in the vestry.

Pastoral Care Pat Green outlined plans for a leaflet to welcome newcomers in church giving information relevant to our services.

Worship Planning Jane Wardman reported on two meetings at which services had been reviewed with a plea for specific criticisms if these are felt to be important. Special services planned for the future include a visit by the Junior School Choir to the October Family Service.

Community Group There was no report but it was announced that the Outreach Committee would amalgamate with this group.

Prayer and Spirituality Group A recent meeting had discussed Bible Reading and Prayer Ministry.

Under Correspondence the Secretary reported receipt of a grant of £60 from the Parish Council towards the costs of our Diamond Jubilee celebrations. Any Other Business produced the following:

John Dean proposed buying a camera and screen to allow the organists to see the main area of church and the forward altar during services. The cost is £129.99 and Alison Dean would investigate payment from the Godfrey Beaumont Fund.

John Dean asked for payment of £2,000 to pay for the flowers for the Flower Festival in church. This was agreed.

Shirley Turner (for choir) had asked that the Lord’s Prayer be sung during certain Communion services. It was proposed that this be on the 2nd, 4th, 5th Sundays. carried by 9 votes to 3

A proposal that a £50 book token be given to Dean Henry to mark his 55 years as a priest was passed unanimously

Baby and Toddler Group I am not sure when or how we changed from “Mums and Toddlers” to “Baby and Toddler” Group but the inclusion of babies is very relevant. We have 5 or 6 babies on the baby mat each week surrounded by mums and carers chatting. Our youngest member was 4 weeks old this week. They soon start wriggling off the mat to join the toddlers with the prams, cars, bikes etc! This term we have had a visit from Ellie Smith, the Wakefield Diocesan adviser for under 5s, and also a sponsored “Jiggle and Jive” which raised £275 for Children’s Leukaemia and Lymphoma. Tracey does a marvellous job week by week with the help of Emily and M.U. and church friends serving refreshments. We will be keeping open during the school holidays as has now become usual. Many thanks to all our helpers.

Coffee Wagon

Just to keep everybody up to date: the Coffee Wagon continues to run with very few volunteers now, but we are able to continue due to the fact that we now team up with Kirklees Youth Hub, a mini-bus sized vehicle which has music, a computer and lots of information for youth on board and which parks in the Skate Park on a Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Two youth leaders are in charge of it and they are full of initiative and ideas. They also organise trips out for the youngsters for Ice Skating etc. Often 25 or more youngsters turn up and it's a good sociable evening. Our hot/cold drinks are still very much appreciated and being local to Honley we feel it is important to continue our presence there. More volunteers would be greatly appreciated! The Coffee Wagon team would like to mention the fact that the local Co-operative Store provide a FREE litre of milk each Thursday evening for the outreach session. We really appreciate this gesture, and so do the youngsters.

On 20th June the Deanery Quiet Day was held at Almondbury Church when the theme was the 23rd Psalm (A psalm of David). The psalm, all about the good shepherd looking after his sheep, was broken down into segments, with the Rev Jenny Barnes explaining in detail what each meant. This was interspersed with music played in four different formats, and meditation. An absolutely delightful afternoon and our sincere thanks to Jenny. The July meeting was Huddersfield City of Sanctuary with Ann Bettys. This was an extremely moving talk about people seeking sanctuary after fleeing from war and persecution. The City of Sanctuary started in Sheffield seven years ago. There are between 350 and 400 asylum seekers in Huddersfield - from Iran, Iraq and African countries. Ann showed a film from the Coventry City of Sanctuary which was set to a song about hardship. This showed pictures of refugees who were homeless with no money only vouchers and their fight for survival. What a fortunate life we lead. Wednesday 1st August is our Summer Lunch at the Travellers’ Rest, Upper Hopton. This year we have opened it up to those who help with Parent and Toddlers’ Group and with Thursday Coffee. We hope that everyone will enjoy the event. The Diocesan Service and Flower Festival to celebrate Mary Sumner Day is on Thursday 9th August at 2.00 pm at Huddersfield Parish Church, Byram Street, Huddersfield. Admission is free, donations towards the Mothers’ Union Family Life Programme in Uganda will be welcome. There will be approximately 24 displays based on Your Gift? Discover and Celebrate. The flowers will remain on display from 9.00am - 4.00pm on Friday 10th and Saturday 11th August. Members are especially invited to join the Evensong on Sunday 11th at 6.30pm. A date for your diary: Wave of Prayer 2012 is to be held on Monday 3 September from 4.00 pm - 4.30 pm. This is all the information that we have at the moment. This year’s Coffee Morning will be held on Wednesday 5th September from 9.30 am - 12 noon. This is our second fundraising even for Family Life in Uganda and your help and support in making this a success would be appreciated. There will be a cake stall, bric-a-brac, bring and buy, cards, clothes and a raffle. If you can provide anything for these stalls or help in any way, please let one of the Committee know.

Stretch or shrink ‘Straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize…’ Phil. 3:13-14 All rubber bands work on this same principle: they must be stretched to be effective. Every person who has ever achieved anything for God has learned to stretch. There are no exceptions. One of the most common mistakes is thinking that success is due to some genius or some magic ‘something or other’ that you don’t possess. But success comes only when you stretch to meet the challenge; failure comes when you shrink back from it. Stretching will make you vulnerable. When a rubber band is taut, it’s much easier to break. Is that why you’re afraid to stretch? Have you tried it before and been hurt? You’ll always have critics, for Jesus said: ‘The servant is not greater than his Lord.’ (Jn 15.20) Dr Jonas Salk, who developed the polio vaccine, was attacked continually for his pioneering work in this field. He found that criticism came in three stages. First, people said ‘It won’t work!’ Then, when he begia to succeed, they said ‘What you’re doing really isn’t that important.’ Finally, after they saw that it was important, they said ‘We knew you’d do it all along.’ So don’t look at the way things are and ask, ‘Why?’ Look at the ways things could be and ask, ‘Why not?’

Open Gardens Festival Over the last 3 years, with 150th celebrations in our sight, St George’s has experienced some delightful fundraising events. On July 1st we continued on this most enjoyable road with the Open Gardens Festival. The wet, wet weather prior to the ‘openings’ had given the gardeners a much harder job than they had anticipated and of course for Stuart and Dorothy Coldwell, the organisers, the fear that rain might keep everyone indoors! Come the day the Village Hall was packed by 12.30 pm for the adjudication of the children’s miniature garden competition. Thanks to Graham Porter who had viewed all 41 entries and gave such great feedback to all the children and particularly the 9 prize-winners. After two songs performed beautifully by the school choir, the prizes were presented by one of West Yorkshire’s Deputy Lord Lieutenants, David Dinmore who, with his wife Lorna, were our guests. St George’s was the first call where John Hinchliffe explained the work that had been done in the churchyard in recent years and the involvement of the Community Payback Scheme. Then into the School grounds where a Jubilee Tree was planted. After that the School’s Community Garden was inspected with great praise for the variety of plants being grown. Thanks to those in the Brockholes Community who give time and expertise to contribute to this project. With 17 more garden venues in the programme booklet there was no time to be lost and David and Lorna set off to see as many gardens as time allowed.

Houses in New Mill Road, Oakes Lane, Smithy Place, Robinson Lane and Brockholes Lane welcomed them warmly and with pleasure discussed the content of their gardens. So much love and attention had been given to all from the very smallest square to the wider expanses. Thank you gardeners all for giving so much in your contribution to the success of the afternoon. And of course we needed visitors! Lots of village people toured round sometimes, whilst admiring a garden, meeting friends they hadn’t seen for years. In addition there were some far travelled visitors making the journey from other parts of Yorkshire – all expressing words of thanks to the gardeners and for the happy atmosphere around the village. Teas and coffees were available all afternoon in the Village Hall thanks to Joan and her team but the great thing was no-one needed to take refuge there as the weather was good enough for the planned programme to happen and even gave us some spells of sunshine! In conclusion can I repeat thanks to our green-fingered residents, to the School and Head Teacher Clare Thomas for such enthusiastic involvement, to our sponsors listed in the programme and to everyone working in the background.

However the Open Gardens Event was the inspiration of Stuart and Dorothy who have carried its promotion through the last 15 months and put in a tremendous amount of drive and enthusiasm. Its success, both socially and financially, began with them and without hesitation we all say ‘thank you very much’.
