A note from the Vicar - April 2015

‘Some mistakes are costly. In 1962, Dick Rowe from Decca Records rejected a demo-tape made by some young men from the north of England with the infamous words, ‘Guitar bands are on their way out.’ EMI’s George Martin reacted rather differently, which is why we, a billion sold records later, have heard of The Beatles.

This year, many of us will be hearing again the New Testament’s witness to the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. The first disciples were frightened, confused and overjoyed by the empty tomb and their encounters with the risen Jesus. But for us, two thousand years later, Easter can have a dull familiarity. It is easy to assume Easter can be safely ignored. That would be a costly mistake. Easter is not a pious way of talking about the new life of spring. Nor is it just a comforting message for those who find it helpful. Rather, it is God’s way of transforming us and our world: now, as we live the new life he gives us when we put our faith in Jesus Christ; and on the Last Day, when we shall be bodily raised from the dead to enjoy life in God’s new creation for ever. Decca came to realize what an enormous mistake they had made. EMI reaped the benefits of their good decision. This Easter, we have to make a decision. We could ignore the implications of Jesus’ resurrection and live as if it were just a nice story. Or we could receive the good news in faith, recognize Jesus as Lord and King, and rejoice in God’s love. Make sure you make the right decision.

St George’s AD Reports February 2015 So we got down to the ‘heart of the matter’. 2 days before St. Valentine’s – of course it had to be ‘hearts’ but this year with a different slant. We were delighted to welcome Graham Wardman as a guest to our meeting. Graham gave the young people a very interesting talk about the ‘physical’ heart, its function in the body, how and why things go wrong and how you can look after your heart to ‘prevent’ trouble. He asked lots of questions of the young people, got many great responses plus some challenging follow-on questions. There were quizzical looks on these young faces as Graham let them listen to their own hearts via his stethoscope. Very many thanks Graham. As if anticipating Graham’s advice Val had created ‘good exercise’ with a running about game focussing on ‘wearing your heart on your sleeve’. The young people bring 50p each time for charity, which soon builds up, and all agreed it was appropriate to send £100 to the British Heart Foundation. However we didn’t completely forget the ‘romantic’ heart and there was just time to make a Valentine’s card for the chosen ‘secret’ recipient plus a giant heart at the back of Church for the congregation on Sunday. This heart was a paper woven one, depicting the inter-relationship of love, understanding, friendship etc.

March 2015 The theme for the evening was ‘Mothers’ Day’ and so in craft work lovely stencilled cards were made along with a floral gift. Val’s imaginative game was based on ‘what every mum loves –a cup of tea’ plus a happy families card search round church. Each game was based on teamwork and the volume of vocal encouragement for the respective teams was probably heard in Honley!! No AD in April as it is Easter holiday time. The next meeting is Thursday May 14

th.

We were pleased to welcome a good number of visitors to the March meeting where we very much enjoyed Joe Froggatt speak about his experiences working in Social Services, along with some of the changes that have taken place in the service over the years. The anecdotes especially were quite moving and gave much food for thought. Joe still has plenty of material left to speak about as we ran out of time, so we hope to welcome him back at some point in the future for part two! Honley Branch takes a break in April to support other activities for Holy week, so the next monthly meeting will be on Wednesday 6

th May when

Kevin Radford is the speaker on ‘Citizens Advice Bureau’ - all welcome. On the first Wednesday in June there will be a lunch outing – please watch for details nearer the time. Pauline Adams is still receiving items to make up emergency toiletry bags for Huddersfield Royal Infirmary and Calderdale Royal Hospital. We were able to donate another 50 bags recently. Any items (combs, small soaps, toothbrushes, toothpaste, flannels, small freezer bags) or cash donations are greatly received. Feedback from the hospitals is that those who are admitted urgently without their own supplies appreciate the bags a great deal.

Supported by the Mother’s Union Thursday Coffee is a place for people to meet, enjoy company and refreshment. Why not pop in and join us? We would also welcome any volunteers to help once a month or bimonthly - not restricted to MU members or from the congregation, anyone can offer to help!.

Bras for Africa (Recycling to make a difference)

This is a novel recycling project which aims to reduce the incidence of rape and HIV among African woman. This is achieved by recycling old bras which are sent out to Africa and distributed free of charge to the woman there. For most of these women underwear is expensive and unaffordable and therefore owning this item gives a woman prestige and shows they have money. Women with underwear are considered to be more independent and assertive, so men are less likely to assault them. If you have any bras to donate (in good condition) please see Mary Stapleton (tel: 666629). Thank you.

Election of Churchwardens

Those wishing to stand for election as churchwarden or deputy churchwarden

should see the vicar to discuss this and collect a nomination form from him. To

stand for election you must be baptised, over 21yrs, be a regular communicant and

on the church electoral roll. A nominator and a seconder must sign the nomination

form and it must be returned to the vicar before the Annual Parishioner’s Meeting.

Written or verbal nominations cannot be accepted at the meeting.

PCC members

Those wishing to stand for election as PCC members should see the PCC secretary

(Jane Wardman) to collect a nomination form. To stand for election you must be

over 16 yrs, an regular communicant and on the electoral roll of the church for a

minimum of 6 months. A nominator and a seconder (who must both be on the

electoral roll of the church) must sign the nomination form and it must be returned

to the PCC secretary before the meeting. It is possible to accept verbal nominations

at the meeting, but the same rules apply regarding eligibility and nominator and

seconder. PCC members are elected for a term of three years.

PCC posts available this year: 2 for St Mary’s; 1 for St George’s.

Purpose: To elect Churchwardens (2 for St Mary’s and 2 for St George’s and 2

Deputy Churchwardens for St Mary’s). Elected Annually

Eligibility

to attend

Anyone living in the parish of HonleyBrockholes who is on the reg-

ister of local government electors.

Purpose: To elect PCC members to vacancies available (for a term of 3 years),

present financial reports and reports on life in the parish in the last

year. This year there will also be a presentation on the revision of

parish governance arrangements. A paper about this has already been

circulated.

Only members on the electoral roll of either St Mary’s or St

George’s.

Sidespeople

Sidespeople are appointed (not elected) by the APCM. The usual procedure at the

meeting is for the list of names to be read out and the people appointed ‘en bloc’.

If anyone wishes to become a sidesperson they must be on the church electoral roll

and they need to see the PCC secretary before the meeting so that their names can be

included on the list to be read out.

It is time for the annual revision of the Electoral Roll for the Parish. The cur-rent roll will be on display at the back of the relevant churches from Sunday 22nd March to Sunday 5th April. It is very important that you check your details on the roll.

If any of your details need changing, please fill in an amendment slip. If you are not on the roll and would like to be, please fill in an application form. Please return all amendment slips and application forms by the end of the morning service on Sunday 5 April (Easter Day). (At St Mary’s please re-turn them to Jane Wardman and at St George’s to Elizabeth Mosley)

Amendments/additions will then be made and the new roll for 2015 will be displayed from Sunday 12th April until the Annual Parochial Church Meeting on Saturday 25th April.

Huddersfield Street Angels Huddersfield Street Angels are a group of volunteers who give up their free time on a Friday and Saturday night (10pm-2am) to help those who are enjoying the night life of our town to keep safe. Motivated by God’s love & concern for all they believe that this is

a practical way of showing real Christian care for others. Sometimes they literally are the ‘Good Samaritans’ for those in need.

Teams go out in a minimum of three people with ideally a man and a woman within the team. They stroll around the busy areas of town looking and listening, chatting, picking up and binning glass bottles which have been left around and seeing if everyone is O.K. They have some good conversations, some fun ones and some serious ones. One night a young girl came up to the team and said that the Angels had saved her life, and another young man came over to a team to thank them for helping him the week before. He had no idea how he got home but found a Street Angels card in his pocket when he woke up the next morning. To find out more about what they do see www.streetangelshuddersfield.co.uk/ Karen Atkinson (who spent some time with us at St Mary’s as part of her Reader training last year) is a Street Angel and will be speaking at Mothers Union meeting on July 1st at St Mary’s. Make a note in your diary.

Questions for life The Alpha course is a series of interactive sessions that freely explore the basics of the Christian faith. No pressure. No follow up. No charge. Alpha has around twelve sessions and includes food, a short talk and a discussion at the end where you can share your thoughts. Alpha really is for anyone who’s curious about the Christian faith or for those who already consider themselves Christians it can be a good opportunity to re-visit the basics of Chris-tian faith. The talks are designed to encourage de-bate and explore the basics of the Christian faith in a friendly, honest and informal environment.

Parish Book of Remembrance

The Parish Book of Remembrance will record the names of those who have died whose family or friends wish them to be remembered in Church on the anniversary of their death. The Book has pages for each month and will be open at an appropriate page each week.

Those whose names are entered will be re-membered at the Sunday Eucharist on the Sunday after their anniversary and at Daily Prayer on the anniversary day. Each entry will record the full name, date of death and EI-THER the date of birth OR age in years. The Book of Remembrance is kept in a display

case and can be seen whenever the Church is open.

If you would like to enter the name of a close relative or friend who has died in the past few years, and lived in, or was associated with the Parish please complete the form available from the back of Church and return to the Vicar, Churchwardens or Shirley Turner. A voluntary fee of £10 will be divided equally between the scribe who writes the entry and St Mary’s Church Development Fund.

Flowers at St Mary’s – help needed!! Imagine coming in to St Mary’s and finding no flowers here. That happens during Lent and Advent, of course, but during the rest of the year, we have bright, cheerful displays of flowers which enhance the church and bring pleasure to many. But imagine if it was ‘flowerless’ all year round! We have some talented flower arrangers at St Mary’s and, over the years, we’ve had some very dedicated people who have co-ordinated the arrangers. The most recent of these was Sandra Dean, who, after years of dedicated service, decided to step down at the end of last year. This has left the arrangers without anyone to co-ordinate the team. Could you be the new flower team co-ordinator?

It mainly involves organising the flower arrangers’ rota, organising collections in church for flowers prior to Easter and Christmas and then working with the team of arrangers to produce the lovely displays we have at those times of year, as well as at Harvest.

We aIso need more people to go on to the flower arrangers’ rota – at the moment we

can only staff the rota fortnightly. It would be very sad for the flower arranging to dwindle and disappear, but unless we have a co-ordinator and more volunteers for the rota, that is what is going to happen. So, can you help? Messy church is a form of church for children and adults together that involves creativity, celebration and hospitality. Primarily aimed at people who don’t already belong to another form of church it aims to introduce Jesus, give an opportunity to encounter and grow closer to Him. It meets at a time that suits people who don’t usually go to church. It includes a welcome; a long period of creativity time to explore the biblical theme by getting messy; a short celebration time involving story, prayer, song, games etc; followed by a sit-down meal together at tables. All the different elements include people of all ages; adults and children. It is a fun way of doing church for people at all stages of their faith journey . Messy Church Honley is run jointly by St Mary’s, Elim and Trinity Methodist churches. The next event is
