RME - Symbols and Objects
Starter Question:
Imagine that your house had caught on fire. Suppose you knew that all your family were safe and you had time to safely grab one object to save. What would it be and why?
Draw and Think
Draw a picture of the object you chose to save. As you draw think about:
1. Why is this item so important to you?
2. How do you normally treat this object?
Objects and Artefacts
Most of us probably have certain objects that are especially precious to us. It could be a photograph, the teddy you had as a baby, or maybe a special gift given to you by someone you love.
For religious people, special objects might include items such as a holy book, prayer beads, or statues. In RME when we look at religious objects we sometimes call these ‘artefacts’.
Sorting challenge
You might already know about some religious artefacts or symbols.
If you went to primary school in Scotland you should have learned about Christianity and at least one other religion in RME.
Or you might follow a religion yourself.
The next activity is a sorting challenge to see how much you know!
Christianity Judaism Islam Sikhism Hinduism
• Try to put the religious artefacts/places/symbols into the table, where you think they belong.
• If you are able to print this page you can cut the pictures out and then place them in the grid. If not, draw a quick sketch of each item, in the box where you want to place it.
• Which were the easiest and quickest to work out?
• Which took longer? • Can you add any more?
“RME” is Religious
&
Moral Education
At Drummond we have pupils who follow many different
faiths, as well as lots of pupils who are not religious.
It is interesting to learn about each other’s
beliefs and practices.
