Ocean Liners
RMS Olympic was the first ofthree large ocean linersconstructed for the White StarLine to compete against thesuccessful Cunard liners (Lusitaniaand Mauretania). In addition to the Olympic, theother sister ships were theGigantic (Britannic) and theTitanic.
Harland & Wolff shipyards inBelfast, N. Ireland built these‘Olympic class’ ships, andupgraded the shipyard toaccommodate the large size ofhulls.
The keel of Olympic was laid inDecember 1908 and she waslaunched on the 20th October,1910.
Externally the Olympic had cleanlines, using smaller air ventsassisted with ventilation throughthe fourth ‘dummy’ funnel. Insideshe was luxurious, and even hadan indoor Arabian swimming pool.
Her maiden voyage fromSouthampton to New Yorkcommenced on the 14th June,1911, during which she was theworld’s largest liner.
On the 20th September, 1911,while commanded by CaptainSmith (lost with the Titanic) theOlympic collided offSouthampton with the cruiserHMS Hawke, flooding two of hercompartments and twisting thepropeller shaft. Repairs at theshipyard in Belfast delayed theconstruction of the Titanic.
In 1912-13, following the loss ofthe Titanic, Olympic returned to
Belfast and was fitted with extralifeboats and had its bulkheadsstrengthened.World War I saw a decline inpassenger numbers as Germanyhad threatened to sink the liner.
Olympic participated in the war, attempting to tow the HMSAudacious which had beendamaged by a mine. AlthoughAudacious later sunk, thesurvivors had been transferred tothe Olympic. She also was dazzlepainted and used for a fast trooptransport. On 12th May, 1918 theOlympic rammed and sank theGerman submarine U-103 whichhad been preparing to torpedo her.
The Olympic returned to Belfastafter the war to be refitted forcivilian service. During this refitthe she was converted to burn oilinstead of coal.
She remained popular until theonset of the Great Depression.
In 1934 the White Star Line andCunard Line merged , leading tothe Olympic retiring in 1935.She was ultimately scrapped takingtwo years to complete, inInverkeithing, Scotland in 1937.
