The Vermaas first made itsShipSim debut in ShipSimulator 2008 and has sincebeen included in ShipSimulator Extremes.

The post-panamax vessel isdesigned to carry thousandsof containers on trips acrossthe globe, she is typical ofmany large container shipssailing today.

Before the 1960s, ships wouldspend weeks alongside in portloading cargoes which gavecrew members a goodopportunity for shore leavebut was not very efficient.

It was eventually realised thatthe process of transporting acargo could be made far moreefficient and cheaper byadopting a standardisedsystem using containers.

This meant that goods couldbe packed into metalcontainers and transported ona standard trailer to thedockside where it would beloaded and stored on a shipuntil it reached its destinationwhere it could then be loadedback onto another trailer toits final destination.

Initially container ships weresimply old tankers from theWorld War 2 period that wereconverted to hold metalcontainers.

One of the pioneering namesin containerisation wasMalcom McLean who wasoriginally an Americantrucker.

In 1955 he founded McLeanIndustries after purchasingWaterman SteamshipCorporation. In 1956, aconverted tanker named SSIdeal-X sailed to Texascarrying 58 11 metrecontainers.

There are currently seven sizecategories for container ships:small feeder, feeder, feedermax, panamax, post-panamax, new-panamax andfinally ultra-large.

Feeder vessels generally tendto operate around coastalareas transporting smallvolumes of containers fromport to port.

The Panama Canal dictatesthe size of some shipstherefore creating the

panamax category; themaximum beam of a ship thatcan pass through the canal is32.31 metres, a length of294.13 metres and amaximum draught of 12.04metres.

However, due to the newlocks being built at thePanama Canal ships with abeam of 49 metres, a lengthof 366 metres and a draughtof 15.2 metres. Thereforemuch larger ships can use thecanal, including passengersvessels such as the 151,400gross ton Queen Mary 2.

A notable ship of the ultra-large category is the 15,000TEU (twenty-foot equivalentunit) Ebba Maersk one ofeight ships in the E-Classwhich carried 15,011containers in May 2010.

The size of these giant vesselsdoesn’t simply stop with theE-Class; the Maersk groupordered the first vessels of theclass in February and they areexpected to be the world’sbiggest ships uponcompletion.

Ocean Liners

The RMS Queen Elizabeth 2(QE2) was built by the JohnBrown Shipyard, in Clydebank,Scotland, where many previousliners were constructed includingthe Queen Mary and QueenElizabeth.

Her keel was laid on the 5th July,1965 and she was launched andnamed on the 20th September,1967 by Queen Elizabeth II.

She was designed to be morecompetitive against air travelthan previous liners by operatingcruises half of the year andhaving only two classes andmore facilities such as outdoorpools, cinemas, discos and shops.

The sea trails were problematic, and Cunard refused delivery ofthe ship twice.

On the 2nd May, 1969 RMSQueen Elizabeth 2 left on hermaiden voyage betweenSouthampton and New YorkCity.

In 1971 the liner participated inthe rescue of 500 passengersfrom the burning French Lineship Antilles, and was then shehad a bomb threat, resulting inthe arrest of the hoaxer.

Only a year later terroriststhreatened to blow up the shipon a charter cruise between NewYork and Israel for the nation’s25th anniversary.

The next few years were alsodifficult, with boiler problemsresulting in her being stranded

and her passengers taken off, coral reef damage requiringurgent repairs and even anengine-room fire on 23rd July,1976 forcing her to return toSouthampton.

In May 1982 she transportedtroops fighting in the FalklandsWar.

After mechanical issues, between1986/7 she was converted fromsteam power to diesel, and hadher passenger accommodationsmodernised. She was to berefurbished again when acquiredby the Carnival Corporation in1998.

She was sold to Istithmar (Dubaiinvestment company) on the 18th

June, 2007 and subsequentlyretired. The intended use was tobecome a ‘luxury floating hotel, retail, museum andentertainment destination’ atDubai World, but due tofinancial reasons she remainsberthed at Port Mina Rashid inDubai, in seaworthy condition.

Welcome to the Ocean Liners page, produced in association with OceanLiners.com. Onceagain we go to Scotland where one of the world’s most iconic ships was born, the QE2.
