“O Most holy Queen of the Rosary and Queen of Victories, we, your children,earnestly pray that your victory may take place in the hearts of all your children, in theChurch, and over the poor and sick humanity, leading to the final and complete victoryof your Immaculate Heart in the world. Amen.

My victory takes place in the hearts of all my children who consecrate themselves tomy Immaculate Heart and allow themselves to be formed and led by me as little children.I open up these hearts to the purity of love, and in this way I am able to achieve the victoryover every form of egoism, of hatred and of violence, and to spread everywhere the sweetperfume of divine charity.

My victory is being achieved in the souls who are being assisted by me in fightingagainst and in conquering every form of sin. The souls of my children, sing with me the

perennial Magnificat of perfect glory to the Most Holy Trinity.

My victory is being accomplished in the church, which I enlighten with my faith,assist with my presence and comfort with my motherly tenderness. I myself am leadingher by the hand, toward her greatest splendor, making of her the greatest light for all thenations of the earth.

My victory takes place each day over this poor humanity, which is so sick, and farfrom God and which has wanted to build a new civilization without Him. I am openingup new roads for its return to the Lord, who awaits it with the love of a Father.

My complete victory will come about with the triumph of my Immaculate Heart in

the world. Then the miracle of divine mercy, in the power of the Holy Spirit, will renewthe face of the earth, and it will again become a fragrant and precious garden in which themost Holy Trinity will be pleased to be reflected and will receive from the whole createduniverse Its greatest glory.”

“Theocracy” is not so prominent a word as to interfere in theponderings of man. I t is a system of administaration which is humanly

impossible but divinely possible. When I came to hear about it, I felt

that it was the realisation of a dream that I have been keeping in my

mind’s innermost.

My first hearing about Theocracy was when my son, studying

in the 4th standard, was reading about it aloud. I was convinced that

only God could create peace on this earth that had lost peace and frater-

nity. For that to happen, God’s direct rule has to be established on earth.

That is Theocracy.

Theocracy is a form of government in which God or deity is

recognised as the supreme civil ruler. In a pure theocracy the civil ruler

is believed to have a direct personal connection with God. For example,

prophet Moses.

In several countries in the past, theocracy model administration

had been established. Kings and religious leaders were there who ruled

nations, claiming themselves to be the representatives of God. But they

all proved to be mere human and worldly and thus deteriorated. But in

a real theocracy, God’s will is done on earth through his representative,

as it happened with Moses. Moses, Joshua,Elija, Samuel et al had served

the Lord without any fault. But the kings and rulers that succeeded them,

although ruled in God’s name, committed sin and acted against the will

of God. Several countries were formed after Christ’s time and several

of their rulers proclaimed themselves to be representatives of God, but

they had no relationship, whatsoever, with God. In a real theocracy

there will be direct intervention of God and He will be ruling the people.

I am greatly grieved thinking of the state of affairs of Kerala, the place where I live

in. As days pass by the establishments and systems of this land are falling from bad to

worse. Some sort of a devilish culture that devalues moral values and basic human exist-

ence, a culture that hastens to destroy anybody in most despicable and atrocious manner,is enslaving the rulers and politicians, local chieftains, the printing and elctronic media

alike. Rulers and politicians are found to be at the helm in any community and they wield

power and influence over anybody. The influence of the fruits that they yield is very

powerful. The ministers who rule the country, political leaders who lead popular upris-

ings, civil service officers from the chief secretary to the peon in the village office, who

exercise power over the people, the police - all of them are capable of building up a soci-

ety for good or bad. Their nobility, their family status, their good behaviour and culture

build up a good community and the evils they produce devastate a community.

Kerala is known as God’s own country. In what sense ? It was a propaganda by the

tourism department to attract tourists and foreigners. Actually it was a great man’s re-

mark about Kerala. The reason behind it was the natural beauty and topography of this

land. Indeed, Kerala is God’s own country, especially when you think of it in the spiritual

level.

This is the land wherein were imprinted the foot-

steps of St.Thomas, the disciple and apostle of Jesus Chirst.

The word of God was proclaimed in this land through

St.Thomas. Christianity has an ancestory of two thousandyears in this land. The diocese of Pala which ranked as the

one with the highest number of vocations in the world, is

in Kerala. The highest number of evangelists (preachers

of the word) in the world was from Kerala. Also it was in

this little land of Kerala wherein we had the highest num-

ber of retreat preachers and retreat centres. I t was the be-

lievers of Kerala whom God selected and delegated to

preach the good news to the whole world. The retreat

houses of Divine and Potta were centres appointed by Godto preach the good news to the whole world.

What else or more is needed for Kerala to be known

as God’s own country ? But let the truth be discerned that

this own country of God is now in the hands of satan. As

per a survey published by the Central Govt, the highest

number of crimes are committed in Kerala. I t is Kerala

that has the highest number of alcoholics. Kerala ranks




topmost in the number of mental patients. This land can also boast of having the highest

number of divorce cases. Is this God’s own country ? Satan has interfered in the affairs

of God’s own country. What goes on today in this land is the devil’s rule.

Jesus said, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy” (Jn 10:10). The

thief is satan. What he steals is not anything of this world. He steals the children of God.He makes them commit sin and enslaves them. He kills them spiritually, mentally, physi-

cally and materially. He destroys them - through sin he destroys the soul, the body, the

mind, family relationships, wealth and life itself.

The years from 1990 to 2000 were marked as the evangelisation decade. Through

their preaching and healing ministries the priests at Divine and other Charismatic lead-

ers had actually shaken the whole of Kerala. The word of God was proclaimed through-

out the land. Many repented, many were healed, many signs and wonders happened. A

great leap forward was made in everyone’s life of faith.

The period of evangelisation came to an end by the year 2000. The seed of the

word of God that was sown during the evangelization decade had just started to sprout

and grow in people’s hearts; but by that time the decade of evagelization came to an end.

The sprouts had to be again supplied with water, manure and light for their growth.

Word of God is living water, it is life, it is light. People

had to get the word again but it was stopped. Rebukes

and restraints fell upon charismatic prayers. When pow-

ers of human restraints fell upon the Spirit of God, Holy

Spirit became helpless. The anointment that descendedupon the people was blocked, unable to move to the next

step. God was denied the freedom of operation. The con-

sequence? The sown seeds of the word became shrivelled

without growth, got scorched and parched,faded and

withered.

If the wind of God’s power had been permitted to be

blown powerfully the whole community would have been

roused. Great transformation would have happened in

individuals. Families would have been sanctified. I t

would have created changes in the whole community.

Because, it was the time when God was sending His Holy

Spirit for the whole world. It was also the fulfillment of

what the Holy Spirit had spoken through St.Peter on the

day of Pentecost, “This is what was spoken through the

prophet Joel: “In the last days it will be, God declares,

that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your




sons and your daughters shall prophesy,

and your young men shall see visions,

and your old men shall dream

dreams”(Acts 2:16,17). What God had

actually spoken was “Then afterwards I

will pour out my spirit on all flesh” (J oel

2:28). But the Holy Spirit reveals that

what Joel meant by “then afterwards”

was about the last days. The pentecost

experience happened at the beginning

of the last days/ end days. Two thou-

sand years passed by. We are now liv-

ing in the end time days or even end

time moments. It was in the last daysof the end-time period that the works

of the Holy Spirit commenced again in

the form of the Charismatic renewal.

Where is that Holy Spirit now who had

descended very powerfully by the end of

the 1990-s ?. God had selected the

Church in Kerala as a new Israel. The

Church in Kerala had the responsibility

to evangelise the whole world. What Imean by ‘Church in Kerala’ is inclusive of the three rites. Could the Kerala Church bring to

fruition the plan of God ? Think of it in all sincerety.

God has a plan about everybody and about everything. His plans have their own

fixed times. The Charismatic renewal was God’s plan at God’s time. Everyone should

discern how much one could co-operate with it. This is not any accusation. I would say

along with the Holy Spirit who dwells in me, that God became helpless because man failed

to co-operate with God in fulfilling God’s plans at the fixed times. The Church is Christ’s

body. It is through the Church that God desires to fulfill his palns on this earth. When

objections were raised from the Lord’s own Church, the Lord became helpless. He will not

enforce anything upon anybody. If man is willing to co-operate God will implement his

plans through men. If man doesn’t co-operate God turns helpless.

When the wind of the Holy Spirit ceased Satan found it as an opportunity. He

again led man into sin, disgust and disasters. Prayers lost power and sacramental life lost

relevance. Families became disrupted, suicides increased and divorce cases multiplied. Not

only that. When divine power became inactive, devil’s power became active. Violence in




the society increased, so also did murders, in-

cluding political murders. Adultery, homo-

sexuality and like evils spread rapidly. People

became slaves to all sorts of injustice. Having

lost all love, people are behaving like wild

wolves. T.V channels and the press have all be-

come media for revenge and scandal. Political

leaders have lost sanity. Officers of civil admin-

istration have become hard-hearted. Bribery

has to be depended upon for everything and

anything. It was the deterioration of a people

who had no fear of God, no thought about

God and no love of God. Mental patients and

mental hospitals multiplied. Family disrup-tions are at their peak. Alcoholics turn devil-

ish. Future generations are dragged into disas-

trous consequences.

Is there any remedy ?

Solely one remedy:: man should change

his mind. It is difficult to happen. Because,

Satan’s influence upon man is so powerfull.

The one and only method to wipe away this

satanic influence is to bring about God’s rule in man. The God who ruled the people in

former days through His prophets like Moses, Elijah and David - He is still living and

powerful. God’s reign should come upon the people. He is just and merciful, proclaiming

just judgements and leading mercifully. He is love and light - leading with love and show-

ing the lighted path.

In the Lord’s prayer, Jesus prayed, “Thy kingdom come”. Yes, God’s kingdom has

to come upon this earth. The reign of sin and satan has to be put to an end. The kingdom

of God has to be established in every human heart.

O Lord God, who ruled Israel and Egypt through Moses, do come with haste to

rule over the whole world. Let there be peace, prosperity and blessings on this earth. Let the

mighty hand of the Holy Spirit be revealed upon the whole world. Let every knee bend at

the name of Jesus. Make haste, O Lord, to come.

Theocracy is a rule now out of vogue and rejected by men; yet I pray that for this

world to be saved true theocracy may come to be established.

It was 19th May, the festival of the Pentecost. Delighted at the thought that

God has sent His Holy Spirit to the whole world, I thanked God. With a heart full

of love and thankfulness, I told the Holy Spirit who dwells in me that I loved

Him. I told Him, “I love you”. I remembered the Holy Spirit coming into my life

25 years ago. He transformed me, empowered me, made me a new creation and

took me as His own. “For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of

God” (Rom 8:14).

The Holy Spirit who dwells in me came into my life, sanctified me, trans-formed me, tutored and trained me as a child of God. It was the same Holy Spirit

who gave deep convictions about sin. He trained me to discern the ways in which

the devil comes into one’s life through sin. He taught me how to resist and defeat

sin and the devil. “O my Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit given to me, I praise you. I

thank you Holy Spirit”.

Holy Spirit was the one who taught me how to pray. When I was an infant

the Holy Spirit came into me through baptism and made his abode of my body.

When I was thirty three he descended into

me like a powerful warrior, like a hero of

many wars, as a most efficient teacher. He

made me his own.

First of all he taught me how to pray.Sparing not even a single second for mun-

dane things I longed to be with the Lord and

to be always praying with the guidance of

the Holy Spirit. He prodded me on to be in

prayers for hours on end. If I was not in

prayers some sort of dread overpowered me.

Whenever I prayed great power was filled

in me.

The Holy Scripture testifies that Jesus

selected his apostles to be with Him. “And

He appointed twelve, whom he also named

apostles, to be with Him, and to be sent out

to proclaim message and to have authority

to cast out demons” (Mark 3:14,15). One

comes to be with Jesus through his personal

prayers. To be with Jesus always was a train-

ing that Holy Spirit gave me. To spend somany hours with Jesus is indeed a great bless-

ing.

Secondly, Holy Spirit helped me grow

in my love for the Holy Mother and to pray

to her. In fact it was the Holy Mother who

led me to Jesus. My knowledge about the

Mother however was limited to just a few

prayers. But it was after the Holy Spirit came

into me that I began to love the Holy

Mother. Even when I had prayed for hours,

I felt some sort of emptiness in my mind and

my mind was not contented. I was given the

vision of Holy Mary and had that inner urge

that prompted me to pray to her. How? And

what am I to pray? Chant three Hail Marys.

The very next moment I used to experience

the power of the Holy Spirit descending like

a torrent with all its purity. This has occurred

several times in my life. The Holy Spirit al-

most compelled me to pray to Mother Mary.

He transformed it as Holy Rosary in me.

Even today I can experience the Holy Spirit

through Rosary prayers only. Halleluja.

Thirdly the Holy Spirit taught me to

repose trust in God always whatever purpose

it be. The Holy Spirit taught me, not to rely

on humans but on God alone when con-

fronted with problems. When I was

targetted from all sides and was opposed and

insulted I did not rely on politicians, police,

courts of justice or graft because of the grace

of the Holy Spirit. He taught me “ Do not

turn left or right. Do not rely on man. L ift

your eyes above, the Lord will help you”.

This has been my experience yesterday and

today.

When I trusted in God, I had experi-

enced many a time of Him descendingdown to mete out justice for me. In 1994

there was a dispute regarding a plot of land

I bought at Chinnakkanal in Idukki district.

A certain person claiming to be a scheduled

caste man gave a complaint to the then Chief

Minister Mr. Karunakaran. His complaint

was that I had fraudulently taken possession

of his land. The village officer Mr. Mathew

prepared a report against me. When I came

to his office the village officer was not ready

even to listen to me. He told me that the land

will be divested from me. I told him that he

was in that chair not to be partisan and fall

to political infulences, but to do justice. He

wanted to humiliate me. I told him “I f you

do not mete out justice for me, the living




God will do justice for me”. He said sarcas-

tically, “Go and have it from your God’’. I

praised the Lord and went out.

Within half an hour he fell uncon-

scious on his chair. He was hospitalised andwas on bed for two weeks. In between ar-

rived a punishment transfer. He was

transfered by the District Collector for some

other pending enquires against him. Before

he could rejoin the office his reliever had

taken charge of the office. He could not do

anything against me.

I did not go in search of any politi-cal leader. I did not give any bribe nor did I

get anyone’s recommendation. I trusted in

the Lord. I reposed my whole trust in the

Lord. God descended and did the miracle.

It was my Holy Spirit who dwelled in me

who taught me to rely on the Lord in every

situation.

Many believe that God is there. They

also accept that He is mighty. When prob-

lems do arise thay pray to God first. Quite

often there is no answer. They feel that God

does not intervene. Prayers stop at this stage.

They turn left or right for help. They turn to

politicians, police and the judiciary. I shall

recite an event which helps you understand

how the Holy Spirit intervened in a prob-

lem in my life. I was to go to meet a lawyerfor getting my rights over a plot of 21/

2acres

which actually belonged to me. In the morn-

ing while in prayer, I told the Lord, “the

land is mine. I have no other way to reclaim

my land except by moving a court of law. I

have to meet my lawyer. Is it pleasing to

you?’’.




TESTIMONY


My Spirit was at once awakened. I t

was like the Holy Spirit saying to my soul:

'If you go for litigation against your brother

I will not ever be with you'.

It was a powerful experience fromwithin. I did not want to lose the Lord. Not

only did I not go for any litigation with him

but actually I got reconciled with him. The

land was given to him. Within a few months

the Lord blessed me. I bought a 41/ 2acre plot

near my farm at Sooryanelli. It happened in

1995. The land I parted with was in

Kottayam District. At today’s market rate it

may fetch fifty lakhs rupees whereas my

41/ 2 acre plot at Sooryanelli can fetch 4.5

crores.

God tests our faithfulness. When

temptations/problems do arise trust in God

and overcome the same which will then be-

come a blessing. Otherwise it may be calami-

tous. I t may remain a problem sans solu-

tions. “Beloved, do not be surprised at the

fiery ordeal that is taking place among you

to test you as though something strange were

happening to you. But rejoice in so far as

you are sharing Chirst’s sufferings, so that

you may also be glad and shout for joy when

his glory is revealed. If you are reviled for

the name of Christ, you are blessed, because

the Spirit of glory, which is the Spirit of God,

is resting on you’’ (1 Pet 4:12-14).

I became aware of the presence of the

Holy Spirit within me after my first charis-

matic retreat in 1988. In my experiences of

daily life the Holy Spirit was working within

me and leading me very powerfully though

I did not know that those were the works of

the Holy Spirit.I thought it was all the works

of Jesus. This discernment I could not ob-tain as I had not developed an enduring per-

sonal relationship with the Holy spirit. I did

not know that the visions and revelations that

I experienced were happening under the

power of the Holy spirit.

The days when my beloved the Holy

Spirit came into me were like a honeymoon.

He was there at my call. Even when I did

not request, his presence was there and hewalked with me. He touched me, caressed

me and filled my heart with love. These were

all daily experiences. If ever there was any

pain or anguish or any confusion I used to

“Singing aloud a song of thanksgiving, and telling all your wondrous deeds” (Ps

26:7)My name is Rosily Thomas, and I am testifying for my daughter’s child. He

was not walking even after the age of two. We wished to participate in the service at

Suryanelli on 15th August 2012, but could not. On that day I prayed the Rosary for

this child from morning to evening, uniting ourselves in spirit with Tom brother and

Catherine sister. Without much delay the child started to walk. Now he studies in the

L.K .G. We thank Holy Mary who heard our prayers. Ave Maria.

go to the Lord. I will shut myself inside the

room, lock from inside and with closed eyes

stand in front of Him. The Lord then will

give me an urge to take the Bible in my

hands. Holding the Bible in my hand I will

pray to Lord “Talk to me Lord”.

On such occasions I have seen rays

of light descending from the heavens. When

it nears and is on my Bible I will open the

Bible. I will rub my right hand forefinger at

the spot in the Bible where the ray touches. I

will then read the verse there which will bethe answer from the heavenly Father for my

queries.

I had no counsellors, no elders or

pastors in those days of infancy in my spiri-

tual life. There were no prayer followships.

All my answers were from the Lord. He

helped me, taught me, trained me and

guided me. Now I thank the Lord. Oh my

Lord who cam into my life twenty five years

ago, and made me your own through the

Holy Spirit, how good you are! If today I

preach the word of the Lord without anydoubt and with full conviction, it is because

it was taught by the Holy Spirit. It is the Holy

Spirit who taught me about the salvation of

the dead, sanctification of the individuals

and the Church, glorification of Holy Mary,

and about the works of the devil and unclean

spirits. He solidified those convictions like

rock in my innards. The Lord is infallible.

He can never go wrong. The things that hetaught also cannot be wrong. Amen.

Who am I ? What is my calling ?

“On the day I called, you answered me,

you increased my strength of soul” (Ps

138:3)

My name is Catherine Louise and

I am now doing my higher studies inGeology in the state of Uttarakhand. Our

family has been blessed abundantly

through Holy Mother since our partici-

pation in the Spirit in Jesus retreat. My-

self and my sister Caroline Louise had

applied to write the UGC NET exam.

The exam was held in December 2012.

We had promised that if both of us pass

the exam we would visit and pray at the

Grotto at Suryanelli on three Wednes-

days. In the NET exam. Mother Mary

blessed me with the 26th rank and

Caroline with the 36th rank at the na-

tional level. A thousand thanks to Mother

Mary. Ave Maria.

What is my mission ? I understand all

those things perfectly clear today. When

the outside world humiliates me and

throws mud on my good repute I look to

the one who called me. I have to fulfillmy calling. I have to finish my race. There

are no material interests or desires.

In the initial stages of my spiri-

tual life, once I was praying in the com-

pany of my brother-in-law. An yellow

beam of light fell upon me. It descended

through my head into my mind and my

whole body. Later I could understand that

it was the love of God the Father. “God’s

love has been poured into our hearts

through the Holy Spirit that has been

given to us” (Rom 5:5).

“God is love” (1 John 4:8). That

love is poured into us through the Holy

Spirit, because the Holy Spirit always

proceeds from God the Father. The Holy

Spirit who proceeds from God the Father

enters into His spirit who resides in us

and strengthens the spirit. When this em-

powerment happens to the Holy Spirit

who resides in me, my own soul gets

strengthened and my mind, heart, members of

the body and my body as a whole are strength-

ened. Halelluja! This process has to be contin-ued regularly. Only through one’s personal

prayers, this can happen.

Before the advent of the Holy Spirit into

my life afresh, I was a man of the flesh, a

worldly man. I was not born of the Lord and

of the Holy Spirit. I could not love anybody. I

had detest and anger towards everyone. I was

angry and in despair. I was irritated and quar-

relsome. But it was the great mercy of the Lord

that He filled me with His holy love. Now I can

love everyone and forgive everyone. The Lord

has taught me how. God has given me a heart

to suffer anything and to love everybody.

in Jesus fellowship through a retreat. My son went to Suryanelli and prayed there and

on the 8th day he received his Visa and got employed abroad. Jesus also helped us to

purchase a good plot of land and build a beautiful house. The blessings we received

through Spirit in Jesus were very many. A thousand thanks to Jesus for all the bless-

I could not discern the Holy Spirit

who had come into me through the Holy

Baptism during the first thirty three years

of my life. Not only that I could not love

the Holy Spirit, I grieved Him by my

sins all the time. “Do you not know that

your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit

within you, which you have from God?”

(1 Cor 6:19). I do not remember having

ever heard this question in the first thirty

three years of my life. My body was my

own. I never had known that it belonged

to the Holy Spirit. But today I know for

certain that my body is not my own. It is

the holy abode of the Holy Spirit. I have

no right to do anything unclean. “For

they will be made holy who observe holy things

in holiness” (Wisdom 6:10). The Holy Spirit has

given me the desire to do holy things in holiness

and to live a holy life. I have resolved that I will

never again grieve the Holy Spirit who loved andlived in me. Even when I was a sinner, He did

not forsake me; He kept vigil for my return.

I want the Holy Spirit who loved and re-

deemed me. I want to love Him. Never will I

grieve Him again. That is my resolve and firm

decision.

I am Laiju from Kozhikode, Kerala.

I had participated in the Spirit in Jesus re-

treat at Thrissur in the year 2009. In that

retreat I received the anointment of the Holy

Spirit. I was blessed with the grace to praythe Rosary and to comprehend the word of

God in depth. Whatever I ask to Mother

Mary, she grants. In 2010, my son Algreat

faced a sudden attack of his body swelling,

his blood count increasing and some sort of

complaint in the liver. We called Tom brother

and Marian Koodaram for help. Before

reaching the Medical college all the com-

plaints were miraculously cured. Hallelujha!During the retreat in May 2012 also I received

the mighty anointment of the Holy Spirit.

When we were searching for 10 cents of land

to build a house, God blessed us with 21/2

acres of land. Glory to you Jesus and thank

St. Helena, the mother of Constantine the Great, is said to have

been of humble Asian origin, an inn keeper in Bithynia, when Constantius

Chlorus, then only an army officer, married her. However, 21 years later,

upon becoming Emperor of the West, he divorced her for political reasons

but Constantine, their only son, remained faithful and devoted to his

mother and, once he ascended the throne, had imperial honours conferred

on her.

After her son’s victory over Maxentius in 313, Helena, too, became

a Christian, and a model and fervent one at that, her munificent liberality

and her influence as Empress greatly favouring the spread of the faith.

After causing the erection of numerous churches in Europe, she undertook,

at 75, and expiatory journey to the Holy Land, and there erected a church

near the grotto of the Nativity in Bethelehem and another on the Mount

of the Ascension near Jerusalem.Credited with the discovery of the “true cross”, she turned her palace

in Rome into the Church of Santa Cruce in Gerusalemme, where, to this

day, are enshrined a fragment of the True Cross and Pilate’s inscription.

Once there was a king

who planned to build a hospital

for the patients in his kingdom

as he was very concerned about

their welfare and happiness. For

collecting the money needed, the

king invited donations from

those who were generous. But the

response was very meagre. The

wise king then made a proclama-

tion: he intends to build a very

big and beautiful hospital; it re-

quires charity from many; the

hospital will be known in the

names of those who donate the

highest amounts. Within a short

time, a huge amount could be col-

lected. On completion, the inau-

guration was performed in the

presence of a great multitude.

Among them were also thosewho had donated in excess of

their capacity. Anxiously await-

ing, each of them hoped for sure

that the name at the top of that

great structure would be of none

other than his. What the crowd

witnessed on opening was an in-

scription: “This instituation is

GROW LOW Tbuilt with the vain glory of many in this kingdom’’,

artistically written on black granite in white letters,

putting to shame those who yearned for fame andglory !

I was reminded of this story, which I had read

in my younger days, while thinking about the King-

dom of God. Though kings and kingdoms have

changed, the knowledge about the Kingdom of God

has made little change in human hearts. The word

of God speaks “For if the eagerness is there, the gift




GROW HIGHis acceptable according to what one has; not according

to what one does not have”(2 Cor 8:12). Again in

2 Cor 9:7 it is said, “Each of you must give as youhave made up your mind, not reluctantly or under com-

pulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver”.

God has endowed each individual with a vari-

ety of capacities, intelligence, health and wealth; some

with extraordinary powers to rise to the occassion. But

all these are only the gifts of God. Really praiseworthy

are the acts of those who have been awarded for their

life-saving deeds, of still others

who displayed courage regard-

less of their own lives. Great in-

deed is the service of those en-gaged in various sorts of social

services like doctors, nurses, po-

lice personnel, teachers. What is

the motive behind their activi-

ties ? Once an S.I of police was

informed of a drunken man who

was attempting to kill his wife

at home. The S.I. reached the

home with some policemen andtried to enter the house to save

the wife who was facing death.

Suddenly he was attacked with

a chopper and when its was

blocked he lost two of his fin-

gers. Even at the loss of the fin-

gers that officer could thank

God for saving his life, as well

as the life of that woman. A rela-tive of mine working as male

nurse in Muscat once showed

me a merit certificate and said

it was merited with his sincere

service in the ICU in a near-

death case of accident. The au-

thorities were much pleased

with his service and honoured

him with that certificate. Actually he had not

worked intending for an honour but because

of his love and mercy towards the suffering.

God occassioned it for saving a life. Wordof God says, “L ike good stewards of the

manifold grace of God, serve one another

with whatever gift each of you has received”

(1 Pet 4:10). “Do nothing from selfish ambi-

tion or conceit, but in humility regard oth-

ers as better than yourselves. Let each of you

look not to your own interests, but to the

interests of others. Let the same mind be in

you that was in Christ Jesus” (Phili 2:3-5).

It is the motive behind every act that

God takes into account. I have the example

of a priest whose life and deeds I could un-

derstand factually. He spoke very little, he

would understand the needs and pains of

otherrs and would do as much help as pos-

sible with him, wished to be little known and

led a very simple life. He is still a helping

hand to many poor. “ My child, honour

yourself with humility” (Sir 10:28). “Do notexalt yourself when you are honoured” (Sir

11:4). Those who act with the sole motive

that the Lord should be glorified do not care

for the praise nor waver at the opposition

by others. Blessed Mariam Theresa of

Thirssur, at the direction of the Lord, vis-

ited many homes and did services, prayed

for the conversion of many sinners and suf-

fered for the salvation of the souls of the

dead. When she was mocked at by others,

she did not run away from her services but

accepted everything with humility, keeping

herself faithful to the one who called her.

When we neglect to do the good that we are

capable of doing, fearing humiliation or loss

of good name, are we not distancing our-

selves from God actually ? When we dare to

perform the good that fall within our reach,

how much helpful it would be for their re-

cipients. Sirach 3:17 speaks, “my child, per-

form your tasks with humility,” and Sirach

5:1-3 speaks, “Do not rely on your wealth,

or say, ‘I have enough’ Do not follow your

inclination and strength in pursuing the de-

sires of your heart. Do not say, ‘Who can

have power over me?’ for the Lord will surely

punish you”. ‘I am the head of this house:

my wife and children should stand

bowheaded before me’ -- not uncommon are

“Wondrously show your steadfast love, O saviour of those who seek refuge from

their adversaries at your right hand” (Ps 17:7)

My name is Tess Jose, residing at Banglore. By the grace of God, we could par-

ticipate in the Silver Jubilee Convention of Spirit in Jesus at Thrissur in May 2013. The

convention was really a blessing for us. I had obtained the driving licence months back

but was frightened at the very thought of actual driving. I had prayed at Suryanelli for

getting freed from this fright. I listened to the Jubilee Convention C.D.again and again,

especially the talk by Tom brother about David. On the school opening day I had no

other choice but to drive the car to bring my children home. I listened to the talk and

prayed and I could feel the infilling of courage and strength into me. From that day

onwards I drive the car. Praise the Lord.

My daughter Dona was not courageous enough to ride a bicycle. All her friends

learned to ride but she could not and they were rediculing her and she was sad. Afterreturning from the Jubilee Convention she one day took the cycle and suddenly set on

riding it. It brought much confidence and joy into her. Praise the Lord.! Two years

back our son Johns J im used to suffer from fever and expectoration and vomiting.

When homeo medicines proved useless we consulted a paediatrician. The doctor diag-

nosed it was asthma and prescribed medicines and two sorts of inhalers for two years

without fail. He also said it was hereditary and medicines would need to be taken through-

out life at various doses. But we did not take those medicines; instead we trusted in

God and continued with homeo. The child’s illness only enhanced. By the grace of

God, a brother from the Spirit in Jesus ministry happened to visit our home and prayfor the boy. He was miraculouly healed. Then came the Rosary rally at Suryanelli in

October 2011 in which we also prepared to take part. The boy was struck with fever. Yet

we proceeded to Suryanelli and participated in the Rosay rally. Rain and cold enhanced

his illness, forcing us to return on the next day itself. On our way to Banglore the boy

suddenly came to be cured. Now it is two years without any medicine. Praise the Lord.

the heads of families who endorse such

thoughts. Once I happened to visit the house

of a man running a reputed institute. He re-

ceived the guests and talked a lot disclosing

the magnitude of his wealth. When my eyes

were looking for the lady of the house, I

could glimpse a woman watching the visi-

tors through a little partition in the dining

hall curtain. I could later come to know that

she had no freedom to come to the midst of

visitors or engage them. “Do not be like a

lion in your home” warns the word of God

in Sirach 4:30. There are still others who

desire to be praised and specially loved byothers for putting to use their God-given tal-

ents. They would be too willing to bear any

amount of sacrifices before those who praise

and exalt them. But when the desire of their

hearts is not satisfied their deeds also cease.

Not only that, if any fault is pointed out or

when a correction is required they would be

totally unwilling to oblige or to obey. Such

attitudes become manifested even in spiri-

tual realms. God desires that He be exalted

and glorified through every act of man, and

its foundation is humility. “My child,

honour yourself with humility, and give

yourself the esteem you deserve’’ says the

word of God (Sir 10:28).

Periods of suffering are often

occassions for testing the worth of our hu-mility. The word tells, ‘The furnace tests the

hardening of steel” (Sir 31:28). Jesus has

taught that one has to empty himself if he

desires to make Jesus his own and live as a

Christian. Several pleasing things in life may

require to be discarded. When David was

fleeing from Absalom his son, Shimei, a

relative of Saul came out cursing him. Then

Abisha, a bodyguard of David, said , “Whyshould this dead dog curse my lord the King?

Let me go over and take off his head.” But

the king said, Let him alone, and let him

curse; for the Lord has bidden him. I t may

be that the Lord will look on my distress,

and the Lord will repay me with good for

this cursing of me today” (2 Sam 16:2-12).

In chapter 3 of Deuteronomy we read that

Moses was not allowed to enter Cannan but

was allowed only to view it from the top of

Pisgah because the Lord was angry with him

on account of the people of Israel. Moses

was dear to God, and he had led the people

for forty years and had seen God face to face.

But Moses did not complain nor put forth

any claims. What will be our case if we are

“O taste and see that the Lord is good;

happy are those who take refuge in

him” (Ps 34:8)

My name is May Mathew. I par-ticipated in the Silver Jubilee Conven-

tion of Spirit in Jesus at Thrissur in May

2013. There was allergy on my leg and

pus was flowing from the opening. On

the first day when Tom brother prayed

for healing I also prayed for healing. On

the next day the wound was found to be

healed. There was only a little scar left.

During the past several months I wassuffering from infection of the lungs and

fever, occuring frequently. During the

convention, the Lord delivered me from

all these infirmities. I thank you, praise

you Jesus.

to lose our place and stand in life, be iso-

lated and insulted? Would it be some at-

tempts to glorify God through some exter-

nal rituals ? Mathew 11:11 speaks, “Among

those born of women no one has arisen

greater than John the Baptist.” I t was a tes-

timony by Jesus himself. But, What John the

Baptist said was that he was not worthy to

carry the sandals of the one who was com-

ing after him. “ He must increase, but, I must

decrease” (J n 3: 30)I Peter 2:16 speaks, “ As servants of

God, live as free people, yet do not use your

freedom as a pretext for evil”. The grace of

God enters us through inner purification, fol-

lowing which the acts of the Holy Spirit be-

come more powerful. Through the forma-

tion of a sublime inner personality we grow

more spiritual. For this spiritual growth it

is inevitable that the status and gains in this

world are given up as worthless and left-overs. He who is not concerned about

worldly gains will not be worried at their loss.

On the contrary, when we offer them for the

glory of God, He will transform them all for

our blessing. Let all our deeds be marked

with humility, as it is God alone who can

lift up and bring down. Let not our acts be

like those of the vainglorious donors men-

tioned at the beginning of this article. Holy

Virgin Mary who was full of grace surren-

dered herself for the plans of God saying

‘behold the handmaid of the Lord’. As her

children, let us attempt to grow in humility,

to grow low before the eyes of this world and

great in spirit.

Baby Jose Years back, when I was a member in the Sodality (now CLC), a group specially

consecrated to Holy Mother, we used to recite a prayer which is still afresh in my

memory. “I surrender my hands to Jesus for him to work in this world; I surrender my

legs to Jesus for him to walk in this world; I surrender my heart to Jesus for him to love

my fellow beings”.

What is the substance of this prayer ? I must transform to be another Jesus

Christ in this world. It will come true only when we imbibe in us the power of the

Spirit who dwelt in Him and the holiness of

His body as well.

During retreats and prayer fellow-

ships we are getting stronger again and again

by receiving the Spirit in Jesus annointment.On all such occassions you know that the

Holy and Almighty one has annointed you

(1 John 18/ 20). At the same time, when you

receive the Holy Eucharist worthly our

physical figure also gets merged with His

heavenly holiness. “Therefore, my friends,

we have confidence to enter the sanctuary

by the blood of Jesus”(Heb: 10:19). “And it

is by God’s will that we have been sanctified

through the offering of the body of Jesus

Christ once for all”(Heb 10:10). “For by a

single offering he has perfected for all time

those who are sanctified”(Heb 10:14).

Many Catholic families who had

boasted of being specially selected and called

are now at the verge of ruin; at the war-front

with the enemy. What is left to us ? We shouldnever allow ourselves to be ruined by the

persecutions unleashed by the enemy. The

body and blood of Christ which we receive

in each Holy Mass will prove to be our

strength. Let all the words uttered by the

priest as well as the community in each Holy

Mass be made flesh in us and in our fami-

lies. Acts 3/25 says, “In your descendants

all the families of the earth shall be blessed”.

We must inherit this blessing.

Genesis 22/ 18 says, “By your off-

spring shall all the nations of the earth gain

blessing for themselves” Hence, we are not

to be crushed underfoot but to be blessed

abundantly. Through Holy Communion, we

are transformed to be the domiciles of Jesus

Christ. J ohn 6:56, “Those who eat my flesh

and drink my blood abide in me, and I in

them”. If so, we, as those who received the

annointing of the Holy Spirit which was in Jesus by receiving his body and blood, will

change to be the ones in whom Chirst dwells;

will become the carriers of the body, mind

and soul of Christ. In that case, the enemy

has no other choice but to bend his knee be-

fore you.

St. Dominic tearfully prayed in front

of Mother Mary’s statue, to root out the

heresies in France. Thence Holy Mother gave

the rosary prayer to him and to all mankind.

Today, those who accept Holy Mother have

already accepted the rosary prayer as their

weapon.

Let us use this weapon against the foe

who is at work for the destruction of our

families, sharpening our weapon using our

acts of penance like praying on knees,stretching out hands. It is sure that the rosa-

ries we pray from our hearts will be strong

enough to break those old forts of disbelief,

sin and curses created by satan.

Let us grow stronger through the

Holy Mass we offer again and again. May

all those rosaries we pray in true spirit, medi-

tating upon the mysteries in the life of Christand Holy Mother, destroy all the evil forces

that stand before us as hindrances to all the

plans of the Almighty for us. Yes, the Holy

Eucharist is my strength and power, and the

Rosary is my weapon.

For quite some days, a thought was persisting in the mind - whether there was

any shortcut or easy way to make the heart clean. Because, I was deeply convinced

that the greatest blessing in life was to own a clean heart. To have a good and loveful

personality is very important. Even if you are rich in graces and gifts, status, wealth

and comforts - they are all void if there is no love, if the heart is not clean. Hence it

was my earnest prayer, together with the psalmist, ‘God create in me a clean heart’(Ps 51:10). “You desire truth in the inward being’’ (Ps 51:6).

“The heart is devious above all else; it is perverse - who can understand it ? I

the Lord test the mind and search the heart’’ (Jere 17:9,10). The Lord knows the real

condition of our hearts and therefore let us offer our hearts to Him in all humility.

“The hearts of all are full of evil’’ (Eccl 9:3) “The Lord saw that the wickedness of

humankind was great in the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of their

hearts was only evil continually. And the Lord was sorry that he had made human-

kind on the earth, and it grieved him to his

heart”(Gen 6:5,6). To remove the grieving

in the heart of the Father in Heaven let us

cleanse our hearts through Jesus. Let us bring

the hearts of all men to the sacred Heart of Jesus. “And I, when I am lifted up from the

earth, will draw all people to myself ”

(J n12:32).

The one thing that God desires of me

as per His word is my own sanctification.

“For this is the will of God, your sanctifica-

tion: that you abstain from fornication”

(1 These 4:3). For its achievement God de-

mands my co-operation too. “All deeds are

right in the sight of the doer, but the Lord

weighs the heart’’ (Prov 21:2) “And he said,

It is what comes out of a person that defiles.

For it is from within, from the human heart,

that evil intentions come: fornication, theft,

murder, adultery, avarice, wickedness, de-

ceit, licentiousness, envy, slander, pride, folly.

All these evil things come from within, and

they defile a person” (Mk 7:20-23).

Therefore let us pray like this, “Clear

me from hidden faults. Keep back your ser-

vant also from the insolent; do not let them

have dominion over me. Then I shall be

blameless, and innocent of great transgres-

sion. Let the words of my mouth and the

meditation of my heart be acceptable to you,

O Lord, my rock and my redeemer”(Ps19:12-14). Let us bring to mind the prom-

ises of the Lord, and obtain them through

faith. “I am the Lord their God. I will give

them a heart that obeys and ears that hear”

(Baruch 2:31). “I will make an everlasting

covenant with them, never to draw back from

doing good to them; and I will put the fear

of me in their hearts, so that they may not

turn from me. I will rejoice in doing good to

them, and I will plant them in this land in

faithfulness, with all my heart and all my

soul”(Jere 32:40-41). Our God is one who

desires and enjoys in filling us with all His

blessing, in doing only good for us and in

showering upon us His mercy and graces.

“A new heart I will give you, and a new spirit

I will put within you; and I will remove from

your body the heart of stone and give you a

heart of flesh. I will put my spirit within you,

and make you follow my statutes and be care-

ful to observe my ordinances. Then you shall

live in the land that I gave to your ancestors;

and you shall be my people, and I will be

your God. I will save you from all your

uncleannesses, and I will summon the grain

and make it abundant and lay no famine

upon you”(Eze 36:26-29).




“Ho, everyone who thirsts, come to

the waters; and you that have no money,

come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine andmilk without money and without

price”(Isa 55:1). Jesus gave us all that He

had - His Sacred Heart, His love, His

Words, His goodness, His power, His

wounds, His blood and body, His Holy

Spirit along with all the merits of His cru-

cifixion. And if there were to remain any-

thing else with God to be given for the sal-

vation of man, He would have willinglygiven up that also, because He offered even

the last drop of His blood to deliver us from

sin and curses, from satan and his fire. In

all the Holy Masses offered throughout the

world everyday, Jesus is being torn apart

and crucified, mystically. L et us not deny

that love, that mercy, that compassion but

discover the depths of them-we do not know

whether an oppertunity will be repeated.

Once a woman of hindu faith ap-proached me. She told me about her infant’s

dislike towards her, about her painful expe-

rience when the child pushes her away with

dislike for breastmilk. Though she was too

willing to feed, the child was not accepting

it from the moment of its birth. Not only

that, the mother’s very presence was intoler-

able for the child. For the mother who bore

the child for ten months, it was an agonising

experience.

When man disregards and disrespects

God’s love, when His grace and mercy are

denied through sin, how much does God

suffer! How much do we suffer when those

whom we love reject us. How much is the




suffering of the loving and merciful heart of

Jesus through man’s denial of God, his con-

tempt, ingratitude and responselessness to-

wards divine love. I t is the love of Jesus that

is the most rejected in today’s world. “In my

father’s house there are many dwelling -

places” (J n 14:2). The Father awaits us with

many dwelling-places prepared for us. What

is the sort of our response towards Him?

God has all His blessings and goodness to-

wards us. In return what He desires is our

hearts, our love, adoration and gratitude.

“My child, give me your heart’’ (Prov 23:26).

Whatever may be that we donate to God -my wealth, family, time and talents - He will

not be satisfied unless and until I give Him

my heart wholly, unless I surrender to His

will completely.

An indepth purification of life hap-

pens when the heart is purified. The easiest

way for purifying the heart is the willing and

conscious receiving of the Sacred Heart of

Jesus to make it our own. God has prom-

ised, “A new heart I will give you’’ (Eze

36:26). Let us ask for the loving and merci-

ful heart of Jesus. He will be only too happy

to give us His heart. It is a heart throbbing

for us. "Come to me, all you that are weary

and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will

give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and

learn from me; for I am gentle and humble

in heart, and you will find rest for your

souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is

light" (Mt 11:28-30).

Let us surrender our hearts to Him

with all its sinfulness, uncleanliness, with allthe dark influences from generations. Pray

to wash your heart with the holy water and

blood that flow from His heart. Experience

for yourself the fire of God making your sins

and darkness powerless and transforming

your heart. Jump into the heart of Jesus; in

other words, put your heart within the heart

of Jesus - become one with Jesus. Then say,

“It is no longer I who live, but it is Christ

who lives in me’’ (Gala 2:20). Then sing

‘Hallelujah’ and praise the Heavenly Father,

thank Him, worship Him, love Him, and

pray for the whole world. I t will not be you

who does all these but the sacred heart of

Jesus within you. For that very reason it will

be acceptable to the Father. When the Fa-

ther looks down from heaven, it will not be

you whom He sees but the Heart of Jesus

burning with love. What beautiful moments!

This is not to be done just once but has to be

repeated throughout one’s life, especially

during prayers for sanctification, and withfirm faith. “Let it be done for you accord-

ing to your faith’’(Mt 8:13).

At every reception of the Holy Com-

munion with proper propriety, trusting in

the mercy of Jesus and in union with the

merits of Holy Mary and the saints it is the

sacred Heart of Jesus that comes into us.

Allow that sacred Heart to dwell within me.

United with Jesus, become one with Him,surrendering your own heart, mind and

whole life to Him. L ove Him from your

heart. Thereby you will be transformed and

purified.

Let us make our own all the wealth

that is in the heart of Jesus through Holy

Virgin Mary, for the greater glory of God,

for His will to be fullfilled and for the salva-tion of all souls. Our prayers and praises,

thanks and worship, sufferings and atone-

ments - when offered thus in union with the

heart of Jesus and the heart of Mary and

with the merits of the saints, they become

more acceptable to God the Father; they will

flow back to us as heavenly blessings. “On

the last day of the festival, the great day, while

“You show me the path of life. In

your presence there is fullness of joy;

in your right hand are pleasures for

evermore” (Ps 16:11)

For some time in the past I was

suffering from severe pain in my stom-

ach as well as at the right knee. By the

grace of God, I could participate in the

retreat by Spirit in Jesus at Kumily in

May 2012. After that all my pains were

Jesus was standing there, he cried out, ‘Let

anyone who is thirsty come to me, and let

the one who believes in me drink. As the

scripture has said, “Out of the believer’s

Those who abide in me and I in them bear

much fruit, because apart from me you can

do nothing” (Jn 15:5). “I f you abide in me,

and my words abide in you, ask for what-

ever you wish, and it will be done for you.

My Father is glorified by this, that you bear

much fruit and become my disciples.” (J n

15:7,8).Holy Communion gives us the grace

to pray for the whole world, a thirst to pray

for all those people who live in sin, in disre-

gard of the Father’s mercy. We are enabled

to pray with the broadness of His heart, not

with that of ours; to pray for the redemp-

tion of those souls whom the Father has lost.

That thirst will lead us to more prayers and

sanctity, sufferings will become sweeter, for,love brings in more faith, courage and zeal

for prayer.

My name is Justin. Myself and wife were both born through cesarean, and hence

we had desired that our child should be born through a normal delivery. But the doctor

said just the contrary - that the delivery would not be normal and would require opera-

tion. We made several requests to the doctor and at all times doctor said that the childhad overweight and hence would require operation. On the previous day of her admis-

sion in hospital I went to the church and prayed, ‘Lord, I pray in union with Spirit in

Jesus anointments that my child may be born through a normal delivery’. I experi-

enced great anointment during prayer. I again called the doctor and he repeated twice

that operation was required. But, to the surprise of all, in the last minute a normal

delivery happened. Praise you Jesus, thank you Jesus.

John Paul II had an actor’s mastery of the

dramatic gesture and Pope Benedict XVI

engaged the faithful most effectively through

his learned and lucid writing, Pope Francis

showed the world on his first international

trip that his forte as a communicator is the

simple, seemingly artless action that

resonates powerfully in context.

During his visit to Brazil July 22-28 Pope

Francis said little that he had not already

said more than once during his still-young

pontificate. He repeated forceful calls for

social justice, a more humble and empathetic

church leadership and a more active and

engaged laity. But given the historic nature

of the occasion — the first Latin American

pope returning to his native continent — hemust have known that everything he said and

did here would take on special significance,

and he made extensive use of the setting.

The display began even before he left

Rome, when the pope was photographed

carrying his own briefcase onto the plane,

sending a characteristic message of

humility: the menial work of carrying the

bag was a task he reserved for himself. PopeFrancis’ entrance into the city of Rio in a

modest compact van instead of the usual

large sedan was an exhortation to simplicity

for clergy and laypeople alike, consistent

with his previous complaints about spending

on luxuries in a world where children starve.

It was during that ride that Pope Francis used

his already famous gift for spontaneity to

salvage what could have been a dispiritingmishap. The swarming of his car by

pedestrians and the driver’s decision to enter

rush-hour traffic, where the papal motorcade

promptly got stuck, briefly seemed to augur

only more chaos. Instead, the incident

became a chance for the pope to display his

almost magical rapport with crowds, when




he was seen opening his window and

greeting the very people that members of his

security detail were frantically pushing away.

“favela” — his walk down the streets of

shanties, and the tears in his eyes behind the

altar of the slum’s little chapel — will surely

leave more lasting impressions than anything

he said there. Similarly, his speech to what

the Vatican called the “ruling class of Brazil”

— a gentle call to dialogue and “social

humility” in a country shaken by massive

anti-government protests — was clear and

thoughtful, yet less eloquent than his embrace

of a recovered drug abuser and former favela

resident on the stage before the dignitaries.

Pope Francis said nothing during the

trip about moves to liberalize Brazil’s

abortion laws because, as he told reporters

on his plane back to Rome, “young people

understand perfectly what the church’s pointof view is.” But he symbolically espoused

the defense of unborn human life during the

culminating Mass of World Youth Day,

when he welcomed a married couple and

their baby born with only part of her brain;

they had chosen not to abort even though

current Brazilian law would have permitted

them to do so.

Hubble Finds Source of Magellanic Stream:Astronomers Explore Origin of Gas Ribbon Wrapped AroundOur Galaxy

Astronomers using NASA’s Hubble

Space Telescope have solved a 40-year

mystery on the origin of the Magellanic

Stream, a long ribbon of gas stretching

nearly halfway around our Milky Waygalaxy. The Large and Small Magellanic

Clouds, two dwarf galaxies orbiting the

Milky Way, are at the head of the gaseous

stream. Since the stream’s discovery by radio

telescopes in the early 1970s, astronomers

have wondered whether the gas comes from

one or both of the satellite galaxies. Now,

new Hubble observations reveal that most of

the gas was stripped from the SmallMagellanic Cloud about 2 billion years ago,

and a second region of the stream originated

more recently from the Large Magellanic

Cloud.

Smart Knife Detects Cancer in

Seconds

A new smart knife puts the pathology lab in

surgeons’ hands by sniffing out cancer cells

as it cuts flesh. The so-called intelligent

knife, also known as “iKnife,” could allow

surgeons to work more swiftly and efficiently

to remove cancerous tumors without leaving

behind traces of cancer cells.

The iKnife works by detecting cancer

cells in the smoke left behind by the

electrosurgical knife’s act of cutting flesh,according to Science Magazine. When the

iKnife sucks up the smoke, it pipes the

sample to a mass spectrometer capable of

almost instantly analyzing the chemistry of

the biological tissue to detect the presence

of cancer. That translates into near-instant

feedback for surgeons rather than having to




wait on sample analysis by a pathology lab.

Chemists at the Imperial College London

showed that their iKnife could accurately

identify both normal and cancerous tissue

from 3000 tissue samples taken during 300cancer patient surgeries, as reported in the

journal Science Translational Medicine. The

iKnife could tell the difference between

different biological tissues, such as liver or

brain, as well as determine if a tumor

represented a secondary growth originating

from a primary tumor elsewhere.

The iKnife results matched well with

pathology lab results in both testing samples

and during 91 cancer surgeries. Surgeons

received feedback from the iKnife with just

a 1- to 3-second delay. The knife’s developers

eventually envision a display similar to a

traffic light that shows a red light to indicate

the presence of cancer, a green light for

healthy tissue, and a yellow light for an in-

between mix. Zoltan Takats, a chemist atImperial College London, hit upon the idea

of the iK nife when he realized that

electrosurgical knives—also known as “flesh

vaporizers”—already represented the ideal

tools for ionizing tissue in a way that’s perfect

for mass spectrometry. Such electric wands

have been used by surgeons since 1925,

according to National Geographic’s Only

Human blog. Whether or not the iKnifeactually improves health outcomes for

cancer surgery patients remains to be seen.

But the knife appears to take yet another step

in the evolution of a centuries-old surgical

tool that has changed from simple blade to

a relatively bloodless cutting instrument—

and now to a real-time diagnostic tool. It
