COMMEMORATING 40 YEARS OF PING PONG DIPLOMACY

ur mission is clear: its educationto illuminate and preserve the legacy of the 37th President through our own programming and working with the National Archives. Thats exactly what were doing, aggressively and successfully. Our job is legacy, and heres a snapshot of five cornerstones of our ambitious legacy programming: # Since Ron Walker became President and later Chair, weve held 11 Richard Nixon Legacy Forums, with nine carried on C-SPAN, and all featuring prominent White House alums discussing imaginative RN initiatives in domestic and foreign affairs. The next, New Federalism, is August 8 at the Nixon Presidential Library. # The Centennial of First Lady Pat Nixon in 2012 and the President in 2013 are legacybuilding opportunities, and were planning high-profile events and programming. # We are finalizing details for the Richard Nixon Studies Institute, a new arm of the Foundation to focus exclusively on developing increased scholarship and study of RNs vision, initiatives and achievements. # Weve improved our educational outreach with our One Minute Update weekly emails, our website magazine, and this quarterly newsletter. Hits are increasing weekly at nixonfoundation.org. Well soon unveil an innovative Nixon Channel, dedicated exclusively to new and archival video programming. Our online goal is to offer positive and accurate RN legacy text and video available permanently to the world audience. # Weve developed programming for major RN anniversaries, including the 40th of Ping Pong Diplomacy where we were hosts to an East Room rematch of the original Chinese and American players, and next year well mark the 40th anniversary of RNs historic 1972 trip to China. Enjoy this edition of Legacy & Vision, and learn about all that your Foundation is accomplishing and the impressive schedule of events weve scheduled here in Yorba Linda and in Washington. As always, your comments and suggestions are welcome.

T

ogether with USA Table Tennis, the USC U.S.China Institute, and the Consulate General of the Peoples Republic of China in LA, the Foundation presented the 40th Anniversary of Ping-Pong Diplomacy, a tribute to the series of unlikely exhibition matches which led to RNs historic trip to China in February 1972. Events included amateur, collegiate and elite competitions, as well as exhibition matches with original players from the 71 and 72 games. Events also included traditional Chinese dancing, and remarks by Chinese Ambassador Qiu Shaofang and RNs younger brother Ed Nixon.

SEPTEMBERMonday # September 5 Sunday # September 11

Commemorate the 10th anniversary of 9/11#

The week-long series will include ceremonies, patriotic concerts, eye-witness accounts and special displays of artifacts from Ground Zero, including 16 tons of steel from the collapsed World Trade Center Towers and a damaged New York City Fire Department aerial ladder fire truck from the tragic day.

n October 20, 1972 RN declared a New American Revolution from Independence Square in Philadelphia, in front of the very hall where the Declaration of Independence, U.S. Constitution, and Bill of Rights were created and signed. The occasion was the signing of a landmark General Revenue Sharing Bill, which was part of his national policy to empower state and local governments and prevent the federal government from submerging the individual and destroying the dynamism which makes the American system what it is. The Constitution of the United States begins with the words, We the People, said RN at the bills signing in Philadelphia, and the bill I shall sign is a demonstration of a principle that we have faith in people, we believe in people, and we believe that government closest to the people should have the greatest support. Join us for a symposium on President Nixons philosophy concerning the role of government and how hethrough landmark legislation and sweeping initiativesrenewed the spirit of democracy in America and gave power back to the people.FREE E ADMIS VENT SION!

T

he Foundation is pleased to announce the election of the 29th Secretary of Commerce, Barbara Hackman Franklin, to its board of directors, joining a roster of leaders in government, business and public affairs committed to preserving the legacy and vision of Americas 37th President.

n April, five senior RN speechwriters gathered at the George Washington University School of Media and Public Affairs and spoke to students and faculty about how they crafted and prepared speeches for Americas 37th President. Covered live by C-SPAN, their presentation featured vintage footage of RNs most seminal addresses and provided first-hand insight and historical analysis about the impact of presidential rhetoric at home and around the world.

Secretary Franklin not only brings sharp intellect and impressive credentials in business and public service, but a pioneering spirit demonstrated by her great work with our father to expand opportunities for women in government.President Nixons daughters Tricia Nixon Cox and Julie Nixon Eisenhower.

Richard Nixon as Cold War Strategist

Secretary Franklin, now President of the private international consulting firm Barbara Franklin Enterprises, was one of the first women to graduate from the Harvard Business School. She began her public service career in the Nixon White House where she created and led RNs initiatives to expand the role and participation of women in government. These efforts resulted in the tripling of appointments to high-level government positions including cabinet posts and federal judgeships, the advancement of more than one thousand women to middle-level positions, as well as the opportunity for women in the military to be promoted to the rank of Colonel and join the ranks of Admirals and Generals for the first time in history.

n May, the Foundation and National Archives co-hosted a comprehensive RN Legacy Forum on foreign policy at the U.S. Navy Memorial in Washington, D.C. C-SPAN cameras were again present and covered a lively and substantive discussion on the actions RN took for a peaceful conclusion to the Cold War, including his historic opening to China in 1972, his dexterous diplomatic maneuvering in Europe and the Middle East, and the landmark arms control treaties he accorded with the Soviet Union. Participants included Nixon administration national security officials Richard V. Allen, John F. Lehman and Richard H. Solomon. Edward F. Cox, the son-in-law of President Pictured left to right are Richard Solomon, John Lehman, Nixon, moderated the event. Richard Allen, Edward Cox and Archivist David Ferriero The Archivist of the United States, David S. Ferriero, opened the program, calling the jointly sponsored forums a vital part in filling in a blank that papers and even tapes cant do: they will convey a real sense of what it was like to be there.

Covered by C-SPAN, the forum featured panelists all Nixon era legal experts from the White House, Justice Department, and Congress who spoke about the spirit of bipartisanship exemplified by the officials who spearheaded the administrations initiatives and how they brought substantial, lasting changes to Americas criminal justice system. Archivist Ferriero gave introductory remarks and supplemented the presentation with original documents from the era.
