Highlights: Drawing from a combination of historic preservation, urban planning, sustainability, and environmental controls courses, the following activities and events comprise a list of selected highlights for my teaching. Named University of Utah Distinguished Teaching Professor, 2011. Established community-engagement partnerships for numerous projects that

enabled historic preservation, urban planning, and environmental controls stu-dents to use the built environment as a personal learning laboratory.

100% of Utah alumni passed the 2007 NCARB registration exam section on mechanical and electrical design making the University of Utah the #1 school in the nation in this category.

Received 6.0 (on a 6.0 scale) for teaching in several historic preservation and urban planning courses for both course content and teaching methods.

Received the 2006 University of Utah John R. Park Teaching Fellowship to de-velop course materials for future course enhancement. Funding covered travel outside of Utah for a semester to visit and acquire course-related media and meet with practitioners and researchers to discuss recent and future trends in historic preservation, urban planning, sustainability, and stewardship of the built environment. This is a significant teaching award at the University of Utah.

Received six University of Utah Teaching Grants to enhance environmental controls, historic preservation, and urban planning courses. These grants were used for travel to attend workshops and seminars presented by ACSA, HNE, APT, and the Campbell Center for Historic Preservation Studies.

Co-developed a collaborative studio that combined design studio, environmen-tal controls, and structures into a model for integrative pedagogy, Originally conceived for first year graduate students, this collaborative model has been used as the capstone studio for the undergraduate curriculum for the past six-teen years.

Served on the Architecture Curriculum Committee; coordinated and defined the overall term-to-semester conversion strategies for the school.

Coordinated Habitat for Humanity Service Learning Project as part of environ-mental controls course.

Received commendations for Technology and Historic Preservation courses in 1996 accreditation visit.

University of Utah

College of Architecture + Planning, 1993-Present

Professor, 2009-present; Associate Professor, 2000-2009; Assistant Professor, 1993-2000; Curriculum Development Developed historic preservation and community revitalization topic studios for

graduate architecture students. These included the adaptive reuse of a historic church as part of a community theatre complex and the master plan for the Salt Lake City Redevelopment Authority used in the construction of a new branch library and the reuse of several buildings to create a community center within a historic district.

Developed Historic Preservation Theory and Practice course in a graduate seminar format that explores the principles and theoretical basis for historic preservation as well as the practical implementation of historic preservation planning in the built environment. Course topics include the history of the preservation movement in the United States, the methods used to identify his-toric resources, the methods used to define historic districts; the current ap-proaches to revitalizing urban commercial and residential districts, the analyses of financial and economic preservation incentives, and the Secretary of the In-terior’s Standards. This course is cross-listed as both an Urban Planning and a Real Estate Development class.

Developed Main Street Revitalization and Community Redevelopment course in a graduate seminar format that explores architecture and planning aspects of revitalizing communities. This course is a capstone option in completing the historic preservation certificate.
