Top Story - The Robert Morris University men’s basketball team opens a two-game road swingin the state of New Jersey Thursday in search of its first Northeast Conference victory of the 2012-13 campaign with a 7:00 p.m. tip against Fairleigh Dickinson at Stratis Arena in Hackensack, N.J.The Colonials are coming off a 77-70 setback to Central Connecticut State (1/5/13) at the CharlesL. Sewall Center that wrapped up a two-game homestand to open league play and also markedtheir third straight loss. Against FDU, Robert Morris is looking to avoid its first four-game losingstreak since the 2004-05 season as well as its first 0-3 start in the NEC since 1995-96. Redshirtsenior guard Velton Jones paced the Colonials against the Blue Devils with 22 points and four as-sists, while junior guard Karvel Anderson added 15 points, three rebounds, two assists and asteal. Upon completion of its game against FDU Thursday, Robert Morris will conclude its two-game road trip with a 7:00 p.m. tip against Monmouth at the MAC in West Long Branch, N.J, in acontest that will be televised live on MSG.

Quick Stat of the Night - Since head coach Andrew Toole joined the Robert Morris coaching staffin 2007 under former head coach Mike Rice (2007-10), the foundation and emphasis of the pro-gram has been on defense. In order to snap a three-game losing streak Thursday @ Fairleigh Dick-inson, the Colonials will have to get back to those roots. During its three-game slide, RMU isallowing opponents to average 80 points per game while shooting 47.8 percent (77-for-161) fromthe field, including 38.7 percent (24-for-62) from beyond the arc. Each of RMU’s last three oppo-nents has scored 75 points or more, and the last time four consecutive opponents eclipsed the75-point plateau against the Colonials came during the 2006-07 season. When it came time for Robert Morris University Director of AthleticsCraig Coleman, M.D., to name a new head coach for the men’s basketballprogram, he didn’t have to look far.

Andrew Toole was introduced as the eighth head coach in the 37-yearDivision I history at a press conference at the Charles L. Sewall Center May11, 2010, and the 2012-13 campaign is his third season as head coach of theColonials. He owns an overall record of 52-32 (.619).

Anyone familiar with the success RMU has had in recent seasons should be familiar with Toole.Named as former head coach Mike Rice’s top assistant in 2007-08, Toole spent the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons as Associate Head Coach at Robert Morris. In his first season at the helm in 2010-11, Toole continued RMU’s recent run of success, leading theColonials to an overall record of 18-14 (.563), including a mark of the 12-6 (.667) in the Northeast Con-ference. Robert Morris advanced to its third straight NEC Tournament championship game, falling shyof earning its third consecutive title before falling in overtime @ LIU Brooklyn (3/9/11), 85-82. Despite a roster that featured just one senior for the second straight year, Toole led the Colonials toan overall record of 26-11 (.703) in 2011-12, including a mark of 13-5 (.722) in the NEC that helped RobertMorris earn the No. 3 seed in the 2012 NEC Tournament. RMU advanced to its fourth straight NEC Tour-nament championship game before suffering a 90-73 setback @ LIU Brooklyn (3/7/12). The Colonials accepted a bid to the 2012 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT) despitefalling short of their third NCAA Tournament appearance in the last four years and advanced to thequarterfinals thanks to road victories @ Indiana State and @ Toledo. The win over the Sycamores in thefirst round of the 2012 CIT marked RMU’s first victory in a national postseason tournament since 1983. Toole is at the helm of an RMU program that has experienced unprecedented success over the lastfive years. The Colonials own NEC records for victories over the span of three, four and five years. Since the beginning of the 2007-08 season when Toole joined the staff through the 2011-12 campaign,RMU posted an overall record of 117-56 (.676), with the 117 victories both a school and NEC record for afive-year span. While RMU’s overall success is apparent, the program’s accomplishments in the NEC are also clear. Over the last five years, the Colonials have posted a mark of 71-19 (.789) against league oppositionand have finished no lower than third over that span. Overall, RMU has established 134 team or indi-vidual records, with 54 of those coming under the watchful eye of Toole. Robert Morris won outright NEC regular-season titles in 2008 and 2009 and shared the champi-onship in 2010 with Quinnipiac with Toole as a member of the staff. RMU followed up its success in the regular season by becoming the first team in NEC history in 16years to win back-to-back NEC Tournament championships by earning a 52-50 win over Quinnipiac inthe 2010 NEC Tournament championship game in Hamden, Conn. In 2008, the Colonials made their first appearance in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT),dropping an 87-81 decision to No. 1 overall seed Syracuse at the Carrier Dome. In both 2009 and 2010,RMU earned automatic berths to the NCAA Tournament thanks to winning their sixth and seventh NECTournament championships, respectively. In the 2009 NCAA Tournament as a No. 15 seed, the Colonials fell to eventual national runner-upMichigan State, 77-62, in the first round at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn.In the 2010 NCAA Tournament, Robert Morris nearly upset No. 2 seed Villanova in the first round at theDunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I., before falling, 73-70, in overtime. Prior to coming to Robert Morris in 2007, Toole spent the 2006-07 season as an assistant at LafayetteCollege in Easton, Pa. While an assistant with the Leopards, Toole assisted in all facets of the program,from recruiting to player development. He was responsible for helping recruit student-athletes thathelped lead Lafayette to the 2010 Patriot League Tournament championship game against Lehigh. Between 2004 and 2006, Toole spent two years with The Hoop Group in Neptune, N.J. He served asthe director of the Eastern Invitational Basketball Clinic, where he handled logistical management forthe nation's largest high school exposure camp. Toole was a four-year starter at the Division I level, playing for Elon University (1998-2000) beforetransferring to the University of Pennsylvania (2000-03). Over his four-year career at Elon and Penn, Toole averaged 12.3 points per contest, finishing with1,341 points in 109 games. He also posted averages of 3.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.2 steals per contest.Toole, who married the former Brooke Kelly June 3, 2011, resides in the Pittsburgh suburb of Mt.Lebanon, Pa.

Surf Board - Russell Johnson opened the 2012-13 campaign dealing with an ankle injurythat limited his abilities in the early going of the season, but the redshirt senior forwardseems to be getting into a groove. Over the course of the last four games, Johnson has aver-aged 7.3 points and 7.5 rebounds per contest while shooting 44 percent (11-for-25) from thefield and 71.4 percent (5-for-7) at the free-throw line. Johnson has grabbed a season-higheight rebounds three times over that span and on the 2012-13 campaign ranks second forthe Colonials in rebounding with an average of 5.6 per game. The program’s active leader inrebounds with 627, Johnson needs 16 boards to crack the top five all-time at Robert Morrisfor career caroms. Currently sitting in fifth place is former forward Keith Jones, whograbbed 642 boards from 1995 to 1998. Johnson would need to average 7.8 rebounds overRMU’s final 16 regular-season contests to eclipse the career record of 751 that is held by for-mer Colonials Anthony Dickens (1985-90) and Tony Lee (2004-08).

Chicks Dig The Long Ball - The addition of junior guard Karvel Anderson has given RobertMorris another threat from beyond the three-point arc, and his ability to convert from deephas also helped his teammates. The Colonials enter Thursday’s game @ Fairleigh Dickinsonhaving averaged 10.3 three-pointers per contest over the course of their last eight games.In seven of those games RMU has hit at least nine three-pointers. Coincidentally, the lasteight games have all been with Anderson as a member of the starting lineup, the first startsof his Division I career. As a starter, Anderson is averaging 15.4 points per game and is shoot-ing 54.4 percent (43-for-79) from the field, including 53.4 percent (31-for-58) from deep.

Tag Team - Redshirt junior guard Coron Williams and junior guard Karvel Anderson haveteamed up this season to give Robert Morris a lethal combination from deep. Through thefirst 15 games of the 2012-13 season, the duo have combined for 75 three-pointers, an aver-age of 5.0 per contest. Anderson enters Thursday’s game @ Fairleigh Dickinson ranked sec-ond in the Northeast Conference in three-pointers per game (2.73), while Williams rankseighth (2.27). The duo are on pace to finish the 2012-13 regular season with 155 three-point-ers, which would place Anderson and Williams as the top three-point shooting tandem inschool history. The current record of 150 is held by former Colonials Jeremy Chappell (2005-09) and Jimmy Langhurst (2006-10), who turned the trick in 2008-09.

Dishing It Out - Velton Jones has been RMU’s floor general for the last four years, and theproof is in the numbers. Jones enters Thursday’s game @ Fairleigh Dickinson ranked thirdin the Northeast Conference in assists (5.27 per game) and fifth in assist-to-turnover ratio(1.84). Just the eighth player in school history to eclipse 400 career assists, Jones needs 84dimes to eclipse the career record of 555 that is held by former point guard Forest Grant(1980-84). He would need to average 5.3 assists per game over RMU’s final 17 regular-seasoncontests to eclipse the mark.

Break Out - Redshirt senior guard Velton Jones paced the Colonials against Central Con-necticut State (1/5/12) with 22 points , hitting seven of his 16 shots from the field, including2-of-6 from long range, and going 6-for-9 at the free-throw. He also added a trio of stealsagainst the Blue Devils. For Jones, it marked the 16th time in his career he’s eclipsed 20points in a game, which ranks ninth all-time at Robert Morris. Jones needs four 20+ pointperformances to become just the eighth player in school history to score at least 20 pointsin a game 20 times. RMU’s all-time leader in career 20+ point games is all-time leadingscorer Myron Walker, who turned the trick 47 times from 1990 to 1994.

Free Is For Me - In its only exhibition game of the 2012-13 preseason, the Colonials postedan 81-67 win over Saint Vincent (11/1/12) despite struggling at the free-throw line, convert-ing just 54.5 percent (18-for-33) of their attempts at the charity stripe. It’s been a completereversal since the beginning of the regular season, as Robert Morris enters Thursday’s game@ Fairleigh Dickinson having shot 74.8 percent (247-for-330) at the chalk in its first 15games of 2012-13, which ranks second in the Northeast Conference.

50 Cent - Third-year head coach Andrew Toole picked up his 50th career victory thanks toRMU’s 66-54 win @ Hampton (12/8/12). The victory came in his 79th game on the sidelinesguiding the Colonials. Toole is the second fastest head coach in school history to reach 50career wins, trailing only former head coach Mike Rice (2007-10), who turned the trick inhis 72nd game at Robert Morris.

THE GREATEST COMEBACK ...Robert Morris put together its greatest comeback in school history ingarnering a 74-72 win over Youngstown State (11/25/08) at the CharlesL. Sewall Center. The Penguins held a 57-34 lead with 16:07 to play, butthe Colonials closed the game on a 40-15 run to garner the victory. Itmarks the largest deficit on record that RMU has ever come back fromin its 37-year Division I history. Former guard Bateko Francisco (2007-09) hit a jumper with 2.7 seconds to play that helped lift the Colonialsto the win over the Penguins.

WE’RE STREAKING Robert Morris has posted seven consecutive winning seasons, thelongest streak in school history. Since the beginning of the 2005-06campaign, the Colonials own an overall record of 157-88 (.641), includ-ing a mark of 90-38 (.703) in the Northeast Conference.

Scouting the Knights - Fairleigh Dickinson owns an overall record of 6-8 (.429) entering Thurs-day’s game against Robert Morris, including a 1-1 (.500) mark in the Northeast Conference.The Knights are coming off a 68-55 setback @ Wagner (1/5/13), a game in which senior forwardKinu Rochford paced FDU with 16 points and 16 rebounds. It marked the fourth straight dou-ble-double for Rochford, who leads the Knights in both scoring (17.2 ppg) and rebounding (10.7rpg). Rochford is one of three players for Fairleigh Dickinson that is averaging in double figurescoring, as senior guard Melquan Bolding produces a 14.9 points per game average, while seniorguard Lonnie Robinson averages 12.9 points per game. Freshman guard Sekou Harris, mean-while, scores at an 8.8 points per game clip and is leading the Knights in assists with 37 in ninegames, an average of 4.1 per contest.

Fairleigh Dickinson Head Coach - Greg Vetrone (C.W. Post ’86) is in his fourth season as headof the Knights after taking over the reigns in the summer of 2009. An assistant coach withFairleigh Dickinson during the 2008-09 campaign and in his first head coaching job, Vetroneowns an overall record of 25-79 (.240). Vetrone has had assistant coaching stops at C.W. Post,California-Irvine and UNLV.

RMU’s Last Game - Robert Morris slipped to 0-2 in the Northeast Conference for the first timesince the 2006-07 campaign, Jan. 5, and dropped their third straight game overall with a 77-70 setback to Central Connecticut State at the Charles L. Sewall Center. The first half featuredfour ties and six lead changes, with Matt Hunter giving CCSU a 31-26 lead at the 4:38 mark ofthe first half with a layup. Robert Morris responded with a three-pointer from junior guardAnthony Myers-Pate and a layup from sophomore guard David Appolon to tie the game, 31-31,then grabbed a 33-32 edge with a jumper from redshirt senior forward Russell Johnson with3:02 to go before the break. Central Connecticut State would close the half on a 6-1 spurt tograb a 38-33 advantage at halftime, as Kyle Vinales hit a three-pointer, Joe Efese converted alayup and Terrell Allen went 1-for-2 at the free-throw line. The Blue Devils surged to begin thesecond half, using a 9-3 run to open up their first double-digit lead of the contest, 51-40, with15:10 to play. Brandon Peel scored four points for CCSU, while Vinales hit a three-pointer anda jumper. RMU didn't wilt, hanging a 13-3 run of its own on Central Connecticut State to takea 54-53 edge at the 11:08 mark of the second half. Junior forward Vaughn Morgan started therun with a dunk, while junior guard Karvel Anderson scored five points. Vinales, however, putthe Blue Devils on top for good with a jumper with 10:33 to go, part of a 34-point performancefor game-high honors on the night. Vinales converted 12 of his 22 shots from the field, including4-of-9 from beyond the arc, and was 6-for-9 at the charity stripe. In two career games at theSewall Center, Vinales has scored 66 points. The Colonials were led by redshirt senior guardVelton Jones, who eclipsed the 20-point plateau for the second straight game with 22 pointson 7-of-16 shooting. He also added four assists and three steals. Anderson was the only otherplayer in double figures for Robert Morris, scoring 15 points while adding three rebounds, twoassists and a steal.

Block Party - It’s early in the 2012-13 campaign, but it may be safe to say that RobertMorris has never had as natural a shot blocker in school history than junior forwardVaughn Morgan. Through the first 15 games of the season, Morgan has recorded 21blocks, an average of 1.40 per contest that ranks third in the Northeast Conference be-hind Wagner’s Noafall Folahan and Mario Moody. Based on his current average, Morganwill shatter the Robert Morris single-season record for rejections. Former Colonial RobRobinson (2008-10) finished with 35 blocks during the 2008-09 campaign, breaking arecord that had stood for almost 25 years. Morgan, meanwhile, is on pace to finish theregular season with 43 blocks.

Rockin The Chalk - No Colonial in school history has shown a penchant for getting tothe free-throw line better than redshirt senior guard Velton Jones. In a 71-60 victoryover Bowling Green (11/19/12) in the consolation round of the NIT Season Tip-Off, Jonespaced Robert Morris with 16 points on the strength of a 9-for-10 performance at thecharity stripe. For Jones, RMU’s all-time leader in both free throws (471) and free-throwattempts (649), it marked the 18th time in his career he’s visited the charity stripe atleast 10 times in a game. Jones enters Thursday’s game @ Fairleigh Dickinson leadingthe Colonials in both free throws (74) and free-throw attempts (89), a success rate of83.1 percent that ranks fifth in the Northeast Conference.

Start Me Up - Redshirt junior guard Coron Williams, the only Colonial to start all 37games for Robert Morris in 2011-12, is RMU’s active leader for consecutive starting as-signments. Williams has started 57 straight games dating back to the 2010-11 season,the longest streak by a Colonial since redshirt senior guard Velton Jones started 70 con-secutive games before having it snapped last season.

A Special Night - Junior guard Karvel Anderson put forth arguably the most impressiveshooting display in school history in an 84-76 win over Ohio (12/1/12) at the Sewall Cen-ter, hitting all 10 of his shots from the floor in the victory, including 8-for-8 from beyondthe arc. Anderson is the first student-athlete in school history to post a perfect shootingnight from the field with as many as 10 field goals. Former Colonial Rob Robinson (2008-10) held the old mark when he finished 9-for-9 shooting from the floor in a 104-56 winover Wagner Jan. 17, 2009, at the Sewall Center. Anderson is also just the second stu-dent-athlete in school history to convert eight field goals from beyond the arc withouta miss. Former Colonial Scott Shepherd (1988-91) also finished 8-for-8 from deep in a110-80 win over LIU Brooklyn Feb. 8, 1990, at the Sewall Center. Did You Know?Redshirt senior guard Velton Jones became the sixth Colo-nial in the last eight years to lead the NEC in steals againstleague foes in 2011-12. Jones averaged 2.39 thefts per con-test, recording at least three steals in eight of RMU’s 16 tiltsagainst league opponents. Jones joins former Colonials TonyLee (2004-08) and Jeremy Chappell (2005-09) to turn thetrick. Lee led the NEC against league opposition in steals in2004-05 (2.1 spg), 2006-07 (2.6 spg) and 2007-08 (2.4 spg),while Chappell accomplished the feat in both 2005-06 (2.2spg) and 2008-09 (2.6 spg). Jones is the fourth Colonial over-all to lead the NEC in steals against league foes, joining for-mer Colonial Gene Nabors (1995-2000).

The Colonials enterThursday’s tilt @ Fairleigh Dickinson with a record of 27-8 (.771) over the last three yearswhen Williams scores in double figures, the highest win percentage among active playerson the Robert Morris roster. RMU’s loss @ Arkansas snapped a streak of eight consecu-tive wins when Williams scored at least 10 points in a game.

In The Clutch - You certainly could say that Robert Morris has a flair for the dramatic.In a 61-58 victory @ Campbell (12/4/12), junior guard Karvel Anderson buried a three-pointer with 4.5 seconds left to help lift the Colonials to the win. Anderson is fourth stu-dent-athlete on RMU’s active roster to hit a game-winning shot with less than fiveseconds to play. A look at the last 10 Colonials to sink a buzzer beater for Robert Morris:

Defense Wins Championships - At the heart of the resurgence of the RMU basketballprogram over the last six seasons has been defense. Thanks to a 66-61 win @ Louisiana-Lafayette (12/18/12), Robert Morris owns a record to 96-19 (.835) since the beginningof the 2007-08 campaign when holding its opponent to less than 70 points. In three sea-sons under head coach Andrew Toole, the Colonials are 45-12 (.789) when turning thetrick.

Toole Time - Robert Morris is led by head coach Andrew Toole, who completed his secondseason as head coach of the Colonials by leading RMU to an overall record of 26-11 in2011-12. In Toole’s 84 games on the sidelines over the last three seasons, RMU has heldits opponents to less than 70 points in 57 contests, an amazing 67.8 percent of the time.Included in those 57 contests are 25 holding its opponent to less than 60 points, withRMU owning an astounding mark of 24-1 (.960) in those games. On The Offensive - Bolstered by a shooting percentage of 65.6 percent (21-for-32) in the second half of a 91-69 win over Duquesne (12/15/12) at theCharles L. Sewall Center, RMU produced one of its best shooting nights ofthe 2012-13 campaign. The Colonials finished the game with a shooting per-centage of 50.7 percent (34-for-67), including a mark of 46.4 percent (13-for-28) from beyond the arc. RMU has now won 30 consecutive gameswhen shooting 50 percent or better from the floor dating back to the 2008-09 season. Streaker - Redshirt senior guard Velton Jones owns the longest double-fig-ure scoring streak by a Colonial on the active roster at 19 games. Jonesturned the trick in the final six contests of the 2010-11 season and the first13 games in 2011-12. Over that span, Jones averaged 16.6 points per contest.The streak stands as the third longest in school history and fell one gameshy of allowing Jones to become only the third player in school history toscore at least 10 points in 20 consecutive contests. The Charles L. Sewall Center

Robert Morris celebrated its 25th season of playing its home games at theCharles L. Sewall Center in 2009-10. The facility was dedicated in 1985 andnamed for the man who served Robert Morris as president from 1967 until 1989.

The Sewall Center has been the site where the Northeast Conference Tourna-ment champion has been crowned in men’s basketball a total of five times in thelast 27 years, with the Colonials winning four of those titles. RMU won the NECTournament on its home court in 1989, 1990, 1992 and 2009, while in 1986 No.2 seed Marist won the championship with a 57-56 win over No. 1 seed FairleighDickinson.

The 2009 NEC Tournament men's basketball championship game held at the Se-wall Center featured the first sell-out crowd in school history, with 3,227 fanspacked into the arena to watch Robert Morris post a 48-46 win over Mount St.Mary’s that was televised nationally on ESPN2. Former forward Dallas Green(2006-10) hit the game-winning shot with 2.2 seconds to play to help lift theColonials to their sixth NEC Tournament title. In addition, the Robert Morriswomen’s basketball team claimed back-to-back NEC Tournament champi-onships at the Sewall Center in 2007 and 2008.

The Need for ThreeOver the course of the last decade, converting the three-point shot and Robert Morris havebecome synonymous. Despite having its string of consecutive seasons with at least 200three-pointers snapped at six by finishing with 197 in 2009-10, the Colonials are at the topof the Northeast Conference over the last 10 years in three-point field goals made per game.Since the start of the 2002-03 campaign, the Colonials have averaged 7.12 three-pointers percontest, ahead of St. Francis Brooklyn for the most in the NEC. In 2011-12, redshirt sophomoreguard Coron Williams paced Robert Morris by draining 87 three-pointers, the second highesttotal in the RMU single-season record book. So far this season, the Colonials have been ledby junior guard Karvel Anderson with 41 three-pointers.
