Biographical Sketch• He was born on August 18, 1934, in San Antón, Puerto Rico.• He played 18 seasons of professional baseball for the

Pittsburgh Pirates as a right fielder.• He was married to Vera Cristina Zabala and had 3 children.• He did charity work in Puerto Rico and Latin America during

the offseason.• He was a 15 time all-star, won 2 world series, and retired #21

for the Pittsburgh Pirates.• He died on December 31, 1972 during an aviation accident

while flying to Nicaragua to help earthquake victims.

National Baseball Hall of Fame

• Inducted in 1973 without the mandatory waiting period of 5 years. The only other player with this exception was Lou Gehrig.

• This change was voted by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. On March 30 , 1973, the election took place. 92% of the votes said to induct Clemente early.

• His plaque initially read “Roberto Walker Clemente.” In 2000, the plaque was changed to “Roberto Clemente Walker” so it would be in proper Hispanic format.

Personal ThoughtsI think Roberto Clemente is a great role model.

He was a hard worker, good person, and dedicated to baseball and doing the right thing. I also was interested in learning more about him. He was a very athletic person, and I love to play sports. He is a hero in Pittsburgh, and I live right near the city and love the sports teams.
