Steve Katz$20.00 Sunday 5/22 7:00 pm Buy Tickets

Guitarist, Vocalist, & Founding member of Blood, Sweat, andTears, and Blues Project, plays special Solo show, with classictunes, and great stories!Steve Katz started at 15, studying guitar with Reverend Gary Davis. Steve wouldsometimes act as road manager for Reverend Davis and met many of the great“rediscovered” blues men like Son House, Skip James and Mississippi John Hurt.

Steve starting playing in Greenwich Village - during this time there were numerousmusicians obsessed with American roots music. Steve, Maria Muldaur, JohnSebastian and David Grisman – who found the common denominator in jug bandmusic. They and some other friends formed the Even Dozen Jug Band and werecourted by Elektra Records for whom they recorded an album in 1964.

Steve was asked to audition for the Danny Kalb Quartet. He got the job. Al Kooperjoined, and they had the Blues Project, a foray of young white middle-classmusicians into the amplified world of Chicago blues.

After the Blues Project, Steve, Al Kooper, Bobby Colomby and Jim Fielder decidedto work up a set, mainly of Al’s new songs, for a benefit concert whereby enoughmoney would be raised to send Al to London where he wanted to live. Joined byFred Lipsius on alto sax, the concert raised enough money for Al to get a cab to theairport. There was no choice but start another band. Influenced by the Electric Flagand the Buckinghams, a horn section was utilized with rock arrangements thatwere a touch more sophisticated. Thus, the formation of Blood, Sweat & Tears, aColumbia Records contract, and the album Child is Father to the Man. Recordedand mixed in only two weeks, the album sold moderately well but was a hugecritical success.

Al left BS & T after only six months. Getting the record company to continue withthe band without Kooper was difficult. Auditions were held and David Clayton-Thomas was hired. Columbia reluctantly agreed to go ahead with a new album. That album sold six million copies worldwide and fostered three number onesingles. Steve continued with BS & T for five years, during which time the groupwon three Grammies, were voted best band by the Playboy Jazz and Pop Poll twoyears in a row, and won three major Downbeat awards, to name a few. Steve wrotemany songs during his tenure with BS&T, including his well-loved “Sometimes inWinter”.

In 1972 Steve met Lou Reed and became friends. Steve was asked to produce hisnext record Rock & Roll Animal and then Sally Can’t Dance. After a number ofproductions during this period, including the wonderful Nightlights by ElliottMurphy, Steve wanted to return again to playing music.

Although American Flyer was not a performing band, it gave Steve anothercreative outlet in which to work and talented people to work with. Steve was joinedby writer Eric Kaz, Craig Fuller from Pure Prairie League, and Doug Yule from TheVelvet Underground. The first of their two albums was produced by George Martin.

Steve was offered an opportunity to get closer to the business of music in 1977with his appointment as East Coast Director of A&R and later as Vice President ofMercury Records.

Later Steve became enamored with all things Irish and in 1987 became ManagingDirector of Green Linnet Records, the foremost record label of traditional Irishmusic in America.

Like the late great JimmySmith, Baccus is a virtuoso on the Hammond B-3, equally adept at soul jazz andbebop. In many ways Eddie Baccus Sr. has been to the jazz scene what the lateRobert Jr. Lockwood was to the local blues scene; he has been a leader, mentor, and the soul of the community for many years.

Early on his talent was evident as he was linked with another jazz legend, saxophonist Roland Kirk. Baccus and Kirk were schoolmates at the Ohio School ofthe Blind and their sessions together in the old Euclid and 105th area are the stuffof local legends. Kirk would go on to national acclaim before his untimely death inthe late 70's. Baccus stayed close to home and it has been our good fortune.

Eddie Baccus Sr. has been the bedrock of the Cleveland jazz scene and hisinfluence on fans and musicians alike has been invaluable. After 15 years of recording and touring with famed urban jazz ensemble Pieces ofa Dream, saxophonist Eddie Baccus, Jr. stepped out on a lush, soulful and funkyJourney To Love, his independent debut demo to promote him for upcomingshows. Though it has been extraordinarily well received, Baccus is excited about aremixed and remastered version of the collection, which also features three newsongs. The Cleveland born and raised, Virginia based artist will be releasing therevamped version as part of a package with his soon to be released follow-upalbum whose title perfectly reflects Baccus’ life and career as he reflects on thelast 20 years and looks forward to the future: Living The Dream.

Baccus is currently putting the finishing touches on the new album, which willfeature jazz greats like keyboardist Russell Ferrante of the Yellowjackets, fellowsaxmen Eric Marienthal and Elan Trotman, blues guitarist Robben Ford and aspecial guest appearance by Baccus’ father, organist Eddie Baccus, Sr

Like his hero Grover, Baccus switches artfully between soprano, alto and tenor, and on Living the Dream is also playing baritone sax and EWI. Since leaving Piecesof a Dream, he has been recording and performing live with his band Straight tothe Point, a powerful group of musicians who live in the Beltway region (Marylandand Northern Virginia) .

Joining Eddie Sr. and Eddie Jr. for their appearance at Nighttown will be an All-StarCleveland lineup. They are Cecil Rucker on the Vibes. Eddie Sr. has frequentlyappeared with Cecil's group Good Vibes. Billy Artis is on guitar. Many willremember Billy from his days backing the late great Bill Doggett at the Theatricalin downtown Cleveland. Perry Williams III is on drums. Perry is a veteran on thesoul jazz circuit and has worked with Eddie Sr. and Cecil extensively. And on vocalsis Ron Davis.

Dynamic French Vocalist, and Mack Avenue Recording Artist, with Her Six Piece Group back at Nighttown for two big shows! Vocalist Cyrille Aimée was primarily raised in France by a French father andDominican mother. As a curious child in Samois-sur-Seine, she would sneak out ofher bedroom window to wander into the nearby gypsy encampments filled withthose attending the annual Django Reinhardt Festival.

She quickly fell in love with gypsy music and way of life; years later she would singon street corners with friends while traveling across Europe. While in the midst ofone such odyssey, she found herself at the Montreux Jazz Festival, where she wonfirst prize in the vocal competition - which included the financing of her first self-produced album.

When Aimée audtioned for the Star Academy (a kind of French American Idol),she became a finalist. Informed she would have to sing only what she was told, hergypsy spirit rebelled—and in what was a cause célèbre she walked from thecompetition.

She now happily tours the world with her band as well as in a duo setting withBrazilian guitarist Diego Figueiredo. Aimée's talents also recently caught theattention of Stephen Sondheim, who cast her in an Encores Special Presentation atNew York City's City Center in November 2013.

The New York Times referred to Aimée's major label debut in August 2014, as "abravura turn, presented with a smile."
