RASA IB Blast!

3rd Grade (by Ms. Keogler)    How the World Works: May the Force Be With You

The third graders have just begun studying our new IB unit How the World Works, called “May the Force Be With You.” We started the unit by defining what force is, and explored the difference between contact forces (such as tension, air resistance, and springs) and non-contact forces (such as gravity). We have examined how friction affects force, and the different types of friction that exist. We started exploring the difference between balanced and unbalanced forces, and what it means to have a balanced or unbalanced force acting on something or someone. The class also discovered the difference between speed, acceleration, and velocity, as well as how surface area affects objects. After learning about all of these main ideas, we have now begun to explore Newton’s first law of motion. We have been conducting many experiments during this unit to see the affects of gravity, friction, speed, and force on the motion of objects, and are beginning to use the scientific process to hypothesize what we think will happen and then compare it to what actually happens. In the upcoming weeks, the class will learn about Newton’s second and third laws of motion, and will use what they learn to create a car using raw materials to see whose car will travel the furthest!
