Thank you!
Dear Parents,
On March 3rd, we completed the second trimester of the year.
Wow! Our teachers have been busy completing the 2nd trimester
report cards and they will be sent home on Monday, March
13th. Along with each report card, students in 2nd through 6th
grade will receive their NWEA MAP Winter progress report.
During the week of March 13th, we will have minimum days with
a release time of 11:40am. Please plan accordingly for a prompt
pick up. We, at Rocklin Academy, believe that open communi-
cation between parents and staff is an essential element for
student success. Last week, teachers sent home conference
request forms indicating whether they were requesting a con-
ference or not. Additionally, every parent is welcome to request a
conference with their child’s teacher. Please make sure to return
the forms to ensure your conference is scheduled. We look
forward to celebrating your child’s success.
Warm Regards,
Wendy Mitchell
Principal
Does your student love to read their favorite book (checked out from of course our Overdrive library) late into the night? Have they ever had a hard time falling asleep once they put the device down? Why not try using the iPads “Night Shift Mode,” to see if it helps. Night Shift Mode takes the screens natural brightness and warms it up in the evening. Studies show “that lights with blue-ish hues help to keep us awake at night by suppressing the production of melatonin. By shifting to a color tone with more yellow and red, Night Shift can actually help you get a better night's sleep.” To enable it go to Settings, Display & Brightness, and Night Shift.

Yearbook Photos Needed!
The production for the 2016-17 yearbook is underway. It takes upwards of 1,000 photos to make a great yearbook where all kids feel represented. We are looking for photos you have taken in the classroom, on field trips, or at school events. If you have photos you can get them submitted in a couple of ways:
Burn high resolution images to a CD or flash drive and leave in the office. If you would like your media back, please put you name on it.
Email Lisa Haddad at [email protected] to get added to a Dropbox where you can upload your photos.
Yearbook Photographers Needed!
If you are able to take pictures on campus during the next couple of months, please contact Lisa Haddad at [email protected].
Yearbooks Are On Sale Now! Information and order forms for Yearbooks went home this week. We strongly encourage you to order online at ybpay.lifetouch.com. Our school code is 12311617.
If you have any questions regarding Yearbook orders, please contact Dena 916-871-6958 or Edna 916-844-1213.
How do you spell that? Dhriti knows!
Congratulations to Dhriti, who represented
Rocklin Academy Meyers in the California
Central Valley Spelling Bee. The competition
took place on March 1st at the Scottish Rite
Center in Sacramento. Dhriti made it to the
top 20 out of 60 competitors.
Great job, Dhriti!
Destination Imagination
Regional Competition
March 4, 2017
On March 4th, the Destination
Imagination competition was held at
Olympus Middle School. Our own
Taylor from third grade (pictured far
right) competed on the team with
students from Rocklin Academy
Gateway in the engineering challenge.
Her team placed second and they are headed to the
state competition on April 1st. Go Taylor!!
What is D.I.? The Destination Imagination program is a fun, hands-on system of learning
that fosters students’ creativity, courage and curiosity through open-ended academic
Challenges in the fields of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), fine
arts and service learning. Teams ranging in age from early elementary up through high school
compete in a challenge of their choice and work throughout the year to create a solution and
compete against other teams. Teams typically have a parent as their team manager who
facilitates the practices throughout the year. If you are interested in starting a team for
next year, please contact Wendy Mitchell.

EACH KINDNESS
By Jacqueline Woodson
When the new girl Maya first comes to school, “Her coat was open and
the clothes beneath it looked old and ragged.” Chloe ignores Maya’s
smile that first day and every day afterward. And at recess, Chloe and
her best friends, Kendra and Sophie, reject Maya’s attempts to play with
them or impress them. Kendra calls Maya “Never New,” because
“everything she has came from a secondhand store.” Maya isn’t at school the day their teacher brings a bowl of
water and a stone to class. She drops in the stone and tells the students that kindness is like the ripples of
water: “Each little thing we do goes out, like a ripple, into the world.” Chloe thinks about Maya, and is
determined to smile back the next time she sees her. But day after day Maya doesn’t come back, and then the
teacher announces Maya has moved away. Jacqueline Woodson’s moving story is anything but predictable as a
young African American girl is left feeling regret for kindnesses undone, but also is surely changed. The
writing pulses with feeling in Woodson’s quietly powerful narrative set against E. B. Lewis’s light-filled
illustrations. Winner, 2013 Charlotte Zolotow Award (Ages 5–9).
