Georgiou was awarded the $51 million contract for the design and construction of a new interchange at Roe Highway and Kalamunda Road in July 2019.

The project will see Roe Highway lowered by approximately nine metres to pass beneath Kalamunda Road, minimising noise and visual intrusion for residents in the surrounding area. Connectivity between the two roads will be retained through two roundabouts on Kalamunda Road as well as on- and off-ramps to the highway.

A Principal Shared Path (PSP) will also be constructed on the eastern side of the highway, with local connectivity provided for pedestrians and cyclists.

Following an additional State Government funding commitment in March 2019, this path will extend to Berkshire Road, completing a missing link in the PSP network along Roe Highway.

Construction, which commenced in late-2019, is heading towards completion in early-2021.

Roe Highway is part of a key road corridor linking Kwinana Freeway to Great Northern Highway, providing access to Kewdale, Hazelmere and Canning Vale industrial areas. Kalamunda Road is one of the last remaining signalised intersections on Roe Highway.

OverviewThis project involves construction of a grade-separated intersection at the Roe Highway and Kalamunda Road intersection including a new bridge, two roundabouts and on and off ramps.

Roe Highway is being lowered to pass beneath Kalamunda Road. This will minimise noise and visual intrusion for the surrounding residential area. New drainage, street lighting and other supplementary works will complete the interchange.

Project UpdateThe new Kalamunda Road bridge over Roe Highway is taking shape with 12, 35-metre beams successfully installed over one weekend in May. Each 110 tonne beam was lifted into place using a 500 tonne hydraulic crane, safely and with no disruption to traffic.

Works are now focused on constructing the bridge deck, which involves the tying of more than 100 tonnes of steel reinforcement and 360m3 of concrete, followed by some finishing works before the traffic can be diverted onto part of the new bridge.

A shared path is included on the eastern side of the highway and on Kalamunda Road, with local links provided for pedestrians and cyclists.

The path will then extend to Berkshire Road, completing a missing link in the Shared Path network along Roe Highway.

New drainage, street lighting and other supplementary works will complete the interchange.

Bridge Beams to be Installed and Works to Start on New PSP

Next month, the Roe Highway and Kalamunda Road Interchange project will hit some major milestones as works continue to progress towards project completion early 2021.

Bridge Construction During April, we completed the construction of the three piers and two abutments ready for the installation of the bridge beams in mid-May 2020.

The 12, 110 tonne and 35 metre long beams will be lifted on top of the structures and secured into place using a 500 tonne hydraulic crane.

Works will then focus on constructing the bridge deck, which involves the tying of more than 100 tonnes of steel reinforcement and 360m3 of concrete, followed by some finishing works before the traffic can be diverted onto part of the new bridge.

Road Construction Road construction teams are continuing to progress at a rapid rate with more than 4,000 tonnes of asphalt laid to date.

Asphalt has been laid on the Roe Highway southbound lanes (south of Kalamunda Road), for approximately 500m through to the tie in with the existing Roe Highway, as well as on Kalamunda Road, east of Roe Highway.

Sections of the Roe Highway southbound lanes, north of Kalamunda Road are also on schedule for asphalt to be laid in May 2020.

Road works on Kalamunda Road on the west side of Roe Highway should start by the end of April 2020. The first stage of works will take place between Range View Road and the Maida Vale Shopping Centre, before progressing towards Roe Highway.

Kalamunda Road DetourBetween mid-June and mid-August 2020, traffic will no longer be able to turn left onto Roe Highway from Kalamunda Road heading west.

Traffic will be detoured via Maida Vale Road and Hawtin Road to Roe Highway. During this time, all other turning movements at the Roe Highway and Kalamunda Road intersection will be unchanged.

The detour will enable crews to start constructing the new road configuration on the south east corner of the traffic lights that will tie in with the new bridge. Signs will be installed closer to the date notifying drivers of the day the detour will start and also to direct traffic through the detour when in effect.

Underground Services Works to install two water pipes under Kalamunda Road have been rescheduled and will be undertaken in May 2020. The pipes will be installed between Roe Highway and Range View Road. While these works are taking place, a section of Kalamunda Road will need to be closed. The works will occur after hours to ensure minimal impact on daytime road users. Signs will be in place along this section of road to inform road users of the date in advance of the works.

Principal Shared Path (PSP)A section of the new PSP between Maida Vale Road and Sultana Road East opened in May. Works are now being undertaken to upgrade the existing 400 metres of path between the end of the new PSP and the Berkshire Road interchange. This will allow the new path to connect with the existing path network south of Berkshire Road.

SustainabilityThe project is being delivered on behalf of MRWA in line with their current strategic direction, Keeping WA Moving. This means that when planning for and designing the project works, Georgiou must simultaneously consider social, environmental and economic matters to ensure the works are consistent with sustainability principles.

Timeline• August 2018: Request for Proposals issued to shortlisted

applicants• July 2019: Contract awarded to Georgiou Group• August 2019: Construction commencement of PSP

Case StudyRoe Highway Kalamunda Road InterchangeClient: Georgiou Group Pty Ltd When Main Roads WA awarded Georgiou Pty Ltd the contract for the design and construction of a new interchange at Roe Highway and Kalamunda Road, they needed a reliable precast concrete supplier. On 31st of January 2020, after reviewing our functioning capacity and track record, Georgiou Group engaged Dallcon to provide a concrete solution for retaining wall system for the project.

We provided Georgiou Group with the solution by manufacturing and supplying custom L-blocks in seven different sizes and specifications. The project is progressing as per the schedule, and the client is very satisfied with
