Both Mark Duncan and Travis “the fry guy” Gel- brich have a planned meal that will be out of this world. (Remember to bring canned food for Access.) Please also remember we are going to be discussing and making pre-nominations for the year end award for Christmas banquet while our memories are still fresh. The awards are Outhouse, Golden Hel- met, Griswold's, and Snowmobiler of the year. (as for the Griswold’s award somebody might want to ask Jim Gulrich why there are two new sleds on his trailer). The last event of the year is a hurrah ride at Deer Park, April the 10th. There will be a no host dinner on Saturday night. If you are planning to go please see Mark Duncan as he has volunteered to be the chef for the evening. He is barrel cooking ribs and will need some dollars from you if you want to partici- pate in eating those ribs. Ummmm! Here we are close to the end of the snowmobile year, as we can all attest it has not been the greatest snow year we have ever had. PRESIDENTS LETTER

As far as grooming miles this year, we have just exceeded 750 miles, and without more snowfall, we probably won’t get much more than 800 to 900 for the season. On Saturday night just after the Candlelighters ride, I had the opportunity to give Mark Duncan a ride in the Tucker. We ran around the Huckleberry Mountain Loop and found ten feet of snow on the snow-pole. It was a toss up though as far as

who had more fun: Me showing him what a great job the Tucker/Idaho does with the right snow conditions; or him in amazement with his first Tucker ride. “I can’t believe that it can do this much work with such little horsepower!” When I put him in the driver’s seat the last four miles, it was hands down, he was having more fun. We have also welcomed a few new people to grooming. I saw Bob Guthmiller in the seat with a big s m i l e and Chuck A l l e n has joined t h e team with about 25 miles w i t h his first train- ing session. So, if this nasty h o t w e a t h e r keeps h a n g i n g around, we will only have a few grooming weeks left. I’m sure that we will be all shut down by the first week in April. More snow dancing would be helpful, but this late in the season it is really difficult to keep snow on the 60 Road after it has melted off. If you are interested in going for a ride in the cat, please give me a call while there is still a little time left.

Mother Nature was very nice to us and gave us a lit-tle gift of snow just for the Candlelighters. I was hoping that the snow dancing was going to pay off. We re-ceived about three different storms worth of snow and got just enough snow to cover and smooth out the 60 Road. It was just in the nick of time. Otherwise, we would have had to move the ride to somewhere else. We kept up on the groom-ing and the trails were in excellent shape and if you didn’t come up for that ride, you really missed out. Al-most everyone was stuck stuck stuck that headed off the trail without the right attitude.

Over the summer it would be nice if we could compile a history of the Rogue Snowmobilers. As the years have passed by and new members come and go, it would be nice to know who used to participate and what they did and how our club has participated in our community. If you have any information about the club such as who was on the board in any year, who won the Snow-mobiler of the Year in any given year, what pro-jects we took on and the year or any other piece of historical information that we could preserve, please drop me an email to [email protected] or a note with the information to 3996 Avenue H, White City, OR 97503. If you would like to help compile the informa-tion with me, give me a call at 541-826-2052!

It was brought to my attention that I forgot to write about a little incident in December that could po-tentially win that person an Outhouse award. So before we all forget our stories for next year’s awards, send them in as they happen! Drop me a note with just the basics that way we can remind you to tell the story when we have our nominations for Outhouse, Golden Helmet and the Griswold’s Go Snowmobiling!!

Saturday, March 13th turned out to be a great day. We had new snow and nice weather. The roads were icy at first but that didn’t stop a great turn-out. We had 50 to 60 people with a large percentage being the Candlelight-ers families. Candlelighters is an or-ganization that supports families that have kids battling cancer. We had a small sled hill that the kids had a ball using thanks to Jim Gulrich.

The kids played on it most of the day. We started out giving rides on the snowmobiles and also pulled smaller children in sleighs behind the snowmo-bile. All kids big and small were able to take as many rides as they wanted, even the very large kids (Moms and Dads). The rides continued from around 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. when we served hamburgers, hot dogs and of course French fries by the “The Fry Guy” Travis Gelbrich. He has even acquired an apron stating who he is!! He may be sorry he joined up for this since he will never shake that name. Many members brought side dished to

2010 Candlelighters Ride go with the meal. A big thanks to Mark Duncan and Dave Marion for cooking the ham-burgers and hot dogs. One thing this club does well is eat and with Travis, D o n Funk and Mark, we defi-nitely have great chefs. A s usual eve-ryone had a g r e a t time. It is v e r y rewarding to all of us to see these families have a good time and maybe forget, for a short time, what is going on in their lives. We would like to thank Michelle Morgan & Katy Kelley for arranging to get all the families up there for the ride and lunch. We enjoy having as many people as possible but we all know that the ultimate goal would be to have zero participants since it would mean no more kids with can-cer. That would be the greatest gift to all of us. If anyone knows of fami-lies dealing with kids that have cancer

tell them to contact Candle-lighters for support and guid-ance. A big thanks to everyone who helped: Brian & Elysia Gabaldon, Bob & Janice Guth-miller, Brian Watson, Tami Gelbrich, Lori Jordan, Chuck & Laurel Biegert, Geoff Ham-lin, Dobe Griffin, Jim Gulrich, Blair Grinols, Lisa Duncan and Dennis Jordan for bringing up the trailer. If I forgot anyone, my apologies ( I am old and that’s a good reason) Barbara says that I have CRS (Can’t remember _ _ _ _!). We have so many people in this club that are always ready to step up and help. It’s really great! I guess it’s time to end this before you all fall asleep!

The season seems to be wrap-ping up a little early for my taste this year. But as always, we manage to have a great time de-spite the conditions! The District 5 play day was a great success. The Klamath S n o w d r i f t e r s were able to support Candle-lighter’s through the proceeds made that day. The snow was a bit icy but all events were able to be held. If you missed the food pre-pared by Mark Duncan and his crew of helpers, you missed out! Delicious. As someone commented, if there is something our club knows how to do right, it is cooking and eat-ing!!! We were a bit worried about the Candlelighters Ride and were concerned that due to snow conditions we might have to move the event or cancel it. But thanks to a flurry of snow activity in the week before the

events, the ride went on as planned. We had a great turn-out of families this year. Eve-ryone got as many rides as they wanted and as much

food as they could eat. We all had a great time. Afterwards, a group went out to ride in the best snow of the year, at least for me! There was so much powder that it took some doing for me not to get stuck every few feet. Luck-ily, I never

needed to be dug out but several did! Unfortunately, we did cancel the no-host ride scheduled for next weekend at Fish Lake. Another change to the schedule is that we will be hav-ing our last event of the sea-

son at Deer Park in California instead of Thousand Springs

this year. Deer Park got so much more snow than we did this year so we are hop-ing for some great riding there. Our last club

meeting of the year will be on April 6th at D & S Harley. We hope that you will all attend

this event. Travis Gelbrich and Mark Duncan have planned a great meal for everyone and I am looking for-ward to it! All you need to do is b r i n g s o m e canned food items in for the food drive, bring in your stories of what happened on the trail this year (for next

year’s awards) and enjoy! We do our best to keep the meet-ing short and the fun long! See you there!! Lastly, if you have time, take advantage of the free seminar offered by SAR on the evening of March 9th!

Could You Be A Survivor?: This session will describe the psychological and physiological issues that a potential survivor needs to consider dur-ing a life threatening episode in the wild. It will also lay out a blueprint for survival that clearly identifies the steps that will offer the best chance for success from preparation to recovery. Survival Myths and Misconceptions: The goal of this session is to separate survival fact from fiction. What does the word “survival” really mean? Much of the advice provided in the media is impractical and will not work in the field. Learn about skills that do work under adverse conditions.
