Examples of advances of Science and Technology and the Biological Risks at Universitas Indonesia
• Research Performed by Academic Staff and Students:• Insertion of NLS to retroviral vector for gene delivery into non dividing cells
• Development of Avian Influenza Vaccine
• Multi Drug Resistant Tuberculosis
• Animal Model (Rabbit) for Use of Stem Cell for treatment of Tuberculosis Spondylitis
• Use of bacteria for birth control
• Construction of proviral clones of HIV that can infect M. nemestrina
Role of University in a global system
• Drew Faust, Harvard President (2010):
• The university is a paramount player in a global system increasingly driven by:
• knowledge
• Information
• ideas.

Influence of University to the changing
World
Importance of implementation of bioriskmanagement in University Setting• Prevention of accidental and intentional exposure to biological agents
and toxins through laboratory activities
• Introducing the concepts of biosafety and biosecurity to the future generation
• Establishment of model for implementation of biorisk management
• Provision of expertise that contribute to national implementation of biorisk management
Biorisk Management
• Biorisk management is internationally accepted to be implemented based the CWA 15397 and CWA 16393 documents :
• management system approach
• Commitment of Top Management
• Quality improvement
What has been done by Universitas Indonesia in the implementation of Biorisk Management?
• Training of biosafety officers, laboratory managers and students
• Development of management system within the University for implementation of Biorisk Management
• Incorporating biorisk management in life science courses
• Establishment of model for Training, Implementation, Monitoring and Evaluation of Biosafety and Biosecurity at the University of Indonesia:• Supported by top management of Universitas Indonesia
• Participation in the Development of National Standardization of BioriskManagement by National Standardization Body:• Expertise• Provision of documents
Biosafety Training sponsored by BEP-IBA at the University of indonesia
Biosafety Training sponsored by BEP-IBA at the University of indonesia
Model for Training, Implementation, Monitoring and Evaluation of Biosafety and Biosecurity at the University of Indonesia
• Aim:• To establish a model for training, implementation, monitoring and evaluation
of biosafety and biosecurity at the laboratory facilities of the University of Indonesia (UI)
Model for Training, Implementation, Monitoring and Evaluation of Biosafety and Biosecurity at the University of Indonesia
• Objective:
• To increase knowledge and skills for biosafety officers and laboratory researchers related to biosafety and biosecurity through sending them into an international workshop/courses
• To establish teaching materials for training and workshop
• To conduct training and workshop for biosafety officers and laboratory managers
• To assess the existing condition regarding the implementation of biosafetyand biosecurity at the University of Indonesia prior to the establishment of system for implementation, monitoring and evaluation for biosafetyand biosecurity
Model for Training, Implementation, Monitoring and Evaluation of Biosafety and Biosecurity at the University of Indonesia
• Objective:
• To design a strategy for implementation, monitoring and evaluation of biosafety and biosecurity at the University of Indonesia laboratory facilities
• To develop and establish a system for implementation, monitoring and evaluation of biosafety and biosecurity at the University of Indonesia
• To assess and evaluate the implementation of biosafety and biosecurity through the established system at the University of Indonesia
• To establish teaching curriculum for biosafety and biosecurity to be used in education of students of S1, S2 and S3 program
• To present the established model to national program coordinator for biosafety and biosecurity (NIHRD and the future Indonesian Biorisk Association)
Conclusion
• University plays an important role in the national implementation of biorisk management
• Biorisk management system should be established in every university in Indonesia
• The implementation of biorisk management system in University requires strong commitment from every components of the university, especially from the university top management
