CHIEF OF STATE
• Symbol & inspiring example for all Americans– Awarding metals, making speeches
CHIEF EXECUTIVE/ADMINISTRATOR
• “Boss” for over 2.7 million government workers in executive branch
• Chooses officials and advisors to help run branch
• Limited by system of checks and balances– Appointing a person head of CIA– Holding cabinet meetings
CHIEF DIPLOMAT
• Handles foreign policies• Makes treaties (formal agreements with
other countries) with other countries• Ambassadors: official representatives to
foreign governments• Executive Agreements: agreements
with other countries– Traveling to other countries to meet with
leaders– Entertaining foreign leaders
COMMANDER IN CHIEF
• In charge of armed forces– Decides where to send troops, calling
out troops, how weapons will be used
CHIEF LEGISLATOR
• Influences Congress in lawmaking• Congress has actual powers to make
laws– Invites members of Congress to lunch to
discuss issues– Signing a bill of Congress–Making speeches in Congress
CHIEF OF PARTY
• Helps members of their political party get elected to office– Choosing leaders to serve in cabinet– Speaking on behalf of nominee
CHIEF GUARDIAN OF THE ECONOMY
• Concerns on unemployment, high prices, taxes, general prosperty of country– Discusses ways to reduce
unemployment
QUALIFICATIONS/TERMS
• Natural born American citizen• At least 35 years old• Resident of U.S for at least 14 years
• 2 term limit (22nd amendment)
PAY AND BENEFIT
• Congress sets their salary• Since 2001, annual salary $400,000• $50,000 expense allowance• Living in the White House with servants,
cooks, etc• Fleet of cars, Air Force One, helicopters• Secret service for protection• $120,000 travel expense• Pension when they retire
