New Zealanders have teamed up with the popular Robert Harris Café network to raise a significant amount in the fight against breast cancer. Over the last three years, with the help of their customers nationwide, Robert Harris Cafés have reached their target of raising over $100,000 for the New Zealand’s Breast Cancer Foundation. Recently, customers were able to contribute to the Pink Ribbon Breakfast campaign, simply by ordering off the breakfast menu, where 10% of their purchase was donated to the charity. Forty two Robert Harris cafes raised over $50,000 this year, result ing in their total contribution to the NZBF being over $115,000. Breast cancer is the number one cancer for women, with around 3,000 New Zealand women and twenty men being diagnosed each year. In fact the Rolleston Robert Harris Cafe contributed the second highest amount to this year’s donation for the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation, out of the 42 participating Cafes. Over a dozen local customers got involved with their friends and family, and hosted their Pink Ribbon Breakfasts at the Café. So supportive were the local community of the cause it resulted in the Café selling over 1,400 breakfasts a lone

The Selwyn Aquatic Centre celebrated their third birthday with pizzazz; with paddle boat races for all ages, inflatable fun, birthday cake and a colouring-in

competition there was even an underwater world wall where everyone could add their artwork!

“We would like to thank the Selwyn community for their continued support over the years and also for

helping out with the delicious baked goods on Saturday. The bake sale was a big help towards raising funds for St John’s worthy project,” said

Connie Dick, Selwyn District Council’s Programme and Events Coordinator. The monies

from the fundraiser will be directly donated to St John Rolleston’s current building project.

Recently, Rolleston Combined Probus members were guests at the Warehouse South Island Distribution Centre, located in the Izone Industrial Park. Those attending found it extremely interesting to see how the stock was precisely handled and how both deliveries and orders benefitted from a raft of modern technology. It was explained that numerous large shipping containers are emptied daily, before the goods are divided into various sections of the Centre. This includes some items lifted onto shelving up to seven storeys high! While other items are transported by conveyor belt, scheduled with many ‘off ramps’ just like railway

j u n c t i o n s / o r m u l t i - l a n e highways. From here goods are ‘picked and packed’ for distribution throughout the South Island. Goods don’t hang about long in the Centre; generally distributed to stores within three days of their arrival. P r o bu s m em b er s w e r e impressed with safety measures and safety clothing implemented by management and which applied throughout the whole complex. A chance to enjoy morning tea in the modern cafeteria onsite followed the visit, and that and the Centre tour were enjoyed by all who attended. Many of which have their background in the arts - painters/writers etc. John amused those present with anecdotes of the artist’s lives. Bellyful Selwyn were established on June 9th, 2015 by a group of keen volunteers with a vision to replicate the already successful Bellyful Christchurch. Some had been volunteers for that organisation, while others had been grateful recipients of meals. Finding other volunteers based in and around Rolleston proved to be not a difficult task. Due to the power of Facebook, word soon got around about the new programme. Everyone put their hand up for different roles and could offer different qualities, so before long, Bellyful Selwyn was born.

“It's been an amazing year and the team have been fundraising like crazy to become a fully established branch. Bellyful Se lwyn had the i r f i r s t ‘Cookathon’ at the Lincoln Events Centre in October 2015 and have been going strong ever since,” enthused Bellyful Selwyn spokesperson, Rachel Rachel Rachel Rachel RoltonRoltonRoltonRolton. With the increase of this area’s population over the last four years, Bellyful made the decision to open a Selwyn branch. This was not only due to the need within Selwyn, but also to take some pressure off the Christchurch branch. a ‘cookathon’ and deliver these meals to families with newborns or families of young children struggling with serious illness. There is no catch, or pay m en t i n v o l v ed . So…what is Darfield’s JoeJoeJoeJoe the Handyman doing when he is not building a deck or renovating a bathroom in the area? He organises mission trips to the beautiful country of Vanuatu, where he and his wife Katie Katie Katie Katie regularly go, to enjoy making a difference in the lives of others. Specifically, children who have been abused, abandoned or are in need of aid. The vision for the initiative started around two years ago when Katie’s flight to the Pacific nation was rescheduled. She found herself seated next to an ex-pat Kiwi woman on the plane, a plane that she was not scheduled to be on, and a seat she had not planned to be sitting in! Katie and the woman got chatting about their mutual love of Vanuatu - which led to Katie being informed about the darker side of the Island. Young girls who had been

raped, sometimes via incest, and through no fault of their own found themse lves pregnant. These girls felt so ostracised by their community that they would go deep into the jungle, deliver the baby alone and then leave it there to die. “ADRA (Adventist Development and Relief Agency) is working on education, but deeply engrained attitudes are hard to shift,” Katie added. Katie was deeply affected by t h i s h e a r t - w r e n c h i n g i n fo rma t i o n and a f t e r researching it further, felt determined to do something to help these children. Katie’s plane companion told her of a woman in Vanuatu with a wonderful vision for a refuge centre. Just months before her life-changing plane trip, Katie had learned that she was to receive an inheritance from her uncle. She felt compelled to use this and start an orphanage in

Vanuatu and now her vision is becoming a reality. “Last year in conjunction with others, some land was purchased close to Port Villa, on the main island of Efate, Vanuatu,” Katie said. “There is currently a small team working o n g e t t i n g b u i l d i n g construction started, but we need materials desperately. On June 12th, the Intermediate S c h o o l ’ s T r a m p o l i n i n g Competition took place in Rangiora and competing were four keen and proficiently springy students, representing Clearview School. The girls had a great run and the talented team took out overall first place at the event. Willow then went on to compete at the South Island Trampoline Championships held at Olympia

She gained an impressive third place for her age group and also came first in the synchronised category with partner Jade Mitchell (Ellesmere College) - which was no easy task. Willow intends continuing to compete and will attend the October National Trampolining Competition, to be held in Invercargill, as part of the Canterbury team.

REVIEW FIREARMS REVIEW FIREARMS REVIEW FIREARMS REVIEW FIREARMS SAFETYSAFETYSAFETYSAFETY Police are asking people to review their firearms’ security following a spate of firearms targeted burglaries in the Selwyn District. The Arms Act 1983 sets out the minimum security requirements that firearms owners must meet for the safe and secure storage of their firearms. However, with burglars targeting firearms, it may be time for owners to take responsibility for introducing extra precautions rather than relying solely on the minimum requirements to deter thieves. In some recent cases where firearms have been stolen, gun safes have not been locked or keys to gun safes have been left near the safe or on easily visible key hooks. In other cases, flimsy gun safes or makeshift safes such as old metal lockers have been easily forced open. Of equal concern is that in the past six months several firearms have been stolen after being left insecure in vehicles, homes and outbuildings which is contrary to the provisions of the Arms Act.

There is a ready market for stolen firearms in this country, and Police believe many of these stolen weapons will end up in the hands of organised crime gangs deal ing in methamphetamine. Two of the most common firearms types in New Zealand are the shotgun and the .22, and most gun owners, particularly farmers, will have one or both types. A problem with these guns is that they are so commonplace and used so often, the security around them is frequently overlooked. Unfortunately, they are also the firearm types most favoured by criminals because they are so easily converted to a pistol length. All it takes is half an hour and some judicious work with a hacksaw. No gun owner would want to live with the fact that a firearm they failed to properly secure was used in the commission of a crime. A purpose built metal gun safe, properly secured and heavily anchored to the building is best, along with proper security around any keys. Ideally, an alarm system should be installed as well, particularly

the type that will alert a cell phone should the alarm activate. This is particularly useful because most burglaries happen during the day when occupiers are away at work. The Arms Act requires a minimum standard of security be met, but that minimum is becoming obsolete. Rather than doing nothing because minimum standards have been met, a rev iew of the secur it y arrangements in place, may be well overdue. However, the best security in the world is no good if it is not used.... ROAD SAFETY ROAD SAFETY ROAD SAFETY ROAD SAFETY Selwyn District is overly represented in the number of vehicle crashes that occur on New Zealand roads and Selwyn Police want to reduce that number. Many of these crashes have been caused by nothing more than a poor standard of driving. Failing to drive to the conditions, impatient and inconsiderate drivers, inattentive drivers, failing to stop at Stop signs, failing to properly check the way is clear at intersections or when turning, and drifting across the centre-line are all too frequent causes of crashes. Tragically, it is often a completely innocent party who becomes a victim when a crash occurs. Selwyn Police’s message to drivers is; To always drive defensively and to expect the unexpected, particularly around intersections where many of the crashes occur. Always drive to the conditions, concentrate on the driving and be patient and tolerant of other road users, and always be aware that while speed and alcohol are the major killers, the way drivers’ drive is the most important factor in keeping them and their passengers safe. At this time of year, the low sun is a particular hazard and sunstrike is a very real danger. If a driver cannot see properly, they should pull over and stop until they can. They should not keep going in the hope others will avoid them. The full onset of winter often arrives in July and August and once it does it will see the return of black ice on the roads. This is an extreme hazard which drivers need to be very aware of, particularly around the Selwyn District - it is a known and all too frequent cause of serious crashes. Motorists need to stay alert to the ever-present danger of stock wandering on Selwyn roads, particularly at night and in bad weather when visibility is reduced. Police receive reports of wandering stock almost daily and in many cases, usually at night, an animal is hit and a car severely damaged. Worse still, within Selwyn there have been serious and fatal injuries to motorists caused by hitting straying stock. Black or dark coloured animals, particularly at night along unlit country roads, can appear as if out of nowhere and at 100kph, drivers have almost no time to react. Again, the message is drive to the conditions. Reduce speed accordingly at night and in wet weather, this gives drivers the greatest chance of avoiding a crash. Additionally, livestock owners need to take all reasonable steps to ensure their properties are securely and adequately fenced for the type of stock they have. Police recommend road gates are secured by a chain and padlock to lessen the chances of a gate being opened without the property owner’s knowledge.

Sunday, June 19th saw a flock of costumed teens and teachers attend the annual Mud Run and amongst them were many from Selwyn. The event, organised by the University of Canterbury, invites all secondary schools across the greater Christchurch and Canterbury region to take part. This year Sport Canterbury invited Selwyn schools to also send teams of Intermediate students to compete in the event. “On the day there were over 1,000 students and teachers competing, in three events: Boys, Mixed and Girls’ teams,” reported Rita Spadoni Rita Spadoni Rita Spadoni Rita Spadoni of West Melton Primary School. “The students were encouraged to dress up, with a 'Best Dressed' parade before the event even started.” The Mud Run is a five kilometre, off road, obstacle course through mud, mud pits, mud slides, hurdles and pipes.

Entrants are encouraged to compete as a team and finish together. The event is popular among teens as participants do not need sporting or athletic experience; it's all about 'having a go’, ‘having fun with friends’ and getting extremely muddy in the process! West Melton Primary School were super excited with the result of their ‘TADS’ team (Ted, Ted, Ted, Ted,

Aydan, Daisy Aydan, Daisy Aydan, Daisy Aydan, Daisy and StaceyStaceyStaceyStacey) who competed in the mixed teams section and came in at first place. 'TADS' competed against 35 Secondary and Intermediate school pupils at the Motukarara Mud Run to arrive at the finish muddied and with a much deserved win. The team competed with lots self belief, encouragement and teamwork, ran the whole course, and emerged victorious.

Rebecca is completing the final year of her Batchelor of Physical Education at Otago University. Rebecca told the School’s assembly how she had enjoyed West Melton School, especially events such as the cross-country. In her degree she specialised on the ways sport and health are interrelated and how important this is for the community. She also volunteers assisting disabled students with sporting activities as part of a Sports Otago programme.
