27TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME OCTOBER 6, 2019
FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
Dear Parishioners,
In today’s Gospel we hear the disciples asking Je-sus: “Increase our faith.” Jesus replied, “If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you would say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.” Wow! A tiny bit of faith can have a powerful and profound effect in our lives and the lives of others. When Jesus an-swered the question, “Increase our faith,” Jesus im-plicitly agreed that the disciples needed faith, how-ever, he does not support their assumption that a greater quantity of faith will help them. Faith is not about unaided human power that we can control at will. Rather, faith is a power, a grace that flows from God to us; a grace that we tap into. Faith is a grace we need to cooperate with. Faith results from people opening up to and responding to God’s free-flowing action in our lives. When we respond to God’s invitation to faithful discipleship, we help build the Kingdom of God right here on Earth. Faith is not about being able to do miracu-lous works or spectacular tricks like moving mul-berry trees into the ocean. Rather, faith enables God to work in our lives in ways that defy ordinary hu-man experience. Even a tiny amount of faith the size of a mustard seed will help us be loyal and reli-able disciples in the ordinary events of life. Having a little faith means that no obstacle, whether the size of a mulberry tree or a mountain, can stand in the way of our relationship with God and prevent us from carrying out God’s will through works of mer-cy and love. On this “Commitment Sunday” for both parishes, I’m asking everyone to discern what gifts the Lord is calling you to give to Him and His church. We are Christ’s hands and feet as we serve one another and the community of Bedford and be-yond. Both Saint Mary and Our Lady of Hope are instruments of God’s love, and we all have a role to play in building up the Heavenly Kingdom here on Earth. Whatever gifts of time, talent, and treasure you can offer will be gratefully accepted. May the Lord continue to bless our efforts of evangelization through both parishes as we all strive to increase our faith.
