8TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME MARCH 3, 2019

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK Dear Parishioners, I want to thank everyone who donated to the Saint Mary/Our Lady of Hope St. Vincent DePaul Food Pantry special collection. We were collecting mon-ey to offset some of the costs for refurbishing the classroom at Our Lady of Hope School which hous-es the new Food Pantry. We put in a new floor, new wiring, and gave it a fresh coat of paint. Shelving units from the old St. Mary Food Pantry and the Our Lady of Hope Food Pantry were transferred to the new space. Freezers and refrigerators from St. Mary and Our Lady of Hope were also moved into the renovated room. Thanks to all the volunteers who helped move furniture and who did maintenance work to get the pantry up and running. Once we put the new signage up directing people where to go on the property, we will have an open house for all the parishioners. The special collection raised $9,331 for infrastructure for our new Food Pantry. Thanks to all for your generosity! This Wednesday we celebrate one of the most sol-emn days on the liturgical calendar, and probably one of the most attended Masses of the year, not including Christmas and Easter. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, a season which ends at the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday. The word “lent” comes from the Anglo-Saxon word for springtime, “lencten,” which describes the grad-ual lengthening of daylight after the winter solstice. Going back to the early days of the Church, the Lenten season spanned 40 days in imitation of Je-sus’ 40 days in the desert where he was tempted by Satan, Moses’ 40 days on Mount Sinai, and the 40 years the Israelites wandered in the desert. We begin our Lenten retreat by receiving ashes on our forehead, when we will hear one of two acclama-tions: “Repent and believe in the Gospel,” or “Remember that you are dust and to dust you will return.” Saint Mary and Our Lady of Hope will have a combined four Masses on Ash Wednesday to try and accommodate everyone’s busy schedule. Please check the bulletin and Mass calendar for times.

Have a blessed beginning of Lent. Father Joe

MEN’S LENTEN DAY OF REFLECTION - REMAINING FAITHFUL IN DIFFICULT TIMES Join us Saturday, March 9th from 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Fr. Neil Kookoothe and Joe D’Ambrosio are coming to Resurrection Parish to share their real-life experiences of what it means to remain faithful in the midst of utter difficulty. Fr. Kookoothe is a Cath-olic priest, lawyer, nurse, and advocate for the social justice issue of wrongful conviction. Mr. D’Ambrosio is a victim of wrongful conviction. Their story is in-credibly moving and eye opening. The day will in-clude lunch, afternoon witness talks and an oppor-tunity for conversation. Give yourself the gift of a late morning and early afternoon this Lent to focus on what really matters!!! The cost is $18.00 per person, which includes lunch.

LENTEN DVD JOURNEY Filmed on location in the Holy Land, “No Greater Love” is a five-part video pilgrimage guiding you through the last hours of Christ’s life. You will walk step-by-step with Jesus from the Garden of Gethsem-ane to the mount of Calvary. Biblical experts reveal how Old Testament prophecies, biblical symbolism and historical context shed light on the mystery of Christ’s suffering and death. The series also unpacks commonly misunderstood sayings of Jesus such as “Father if it be possible, let this cup pass”. Was Je-sus thinking of backing out at the last minute? Please join us on the following Tuesdays during lent at 1:00 p.m.: March 12, 19, 26 and April 2, 9, at Our Lady of Hope Church. For more information please call Louise at 440-232-8166.
