Taken out of context, the story of Abraham and Isaac is horrible. It is important to understand the story in its historical context. It is a very story and has at least two layers of meaning. First, it affirms the practice of the Israelites to substitute animals for humans in sacrificial ritual. The Israelites banned human sacrifice. Second, the emphasis is on God’s intervention to prevent Isaac’s death. The angel’s second intervention praises Abraham’s faith and renews the covenant promises. The renewal of the promises is the important focus. The narrative therefore shows Abraham’s total trust and faithful obedience even when God seems to contradict himself.

■ FIRST READING: Today’s scriptures focus on beloved sons––and the gift their fathers make them. The fulfillment of God’s promise to Abraham that he would become the father of a great nation (see Genesis 12:2) hinged on the progeny of his only son Isaac, who was himself gift to Abraham in his old age. In today’s reading, God asks the seemingly impossible and unthinkable––that Abraham offer his son as a human sacrifice (a common practice in his day). Abraham’s obedience and trust are almost incomprehensible, but it is the obedience and trust that Jesus lived to the fullest and to which we are also called.

■ RESPONSORIAL PSALM 116 is a prayer that accompanied a sacrifice of thanksgiving after deliverance from some serious and life-threatening affliction (stanza 1). Having experiences God’s salvation, the psalmist walks––lives confidently in the presence of the Lord.

■ SECOND READING: Abraham and Isaac in today’s First Reading prefigure the Father and Jesus in today’s text from Romans. God did not spare his only son or hold him back but sent him to live among us––and to die and rise for us. With this tremendous gift and this tremendous power working on our behalf, what can possibly harm us?

■ THE GOSPEL: On the mountaintop, Jesus undergoes an extraordinary experience. Was he at prayer? He is described in what we might consider supernatural terms: clothes whiter than any earthly bleach could make them, standard attire in the heavenly realm. Peter, James, and John are afforded a glimpse of his true identity and confirmation of it in the word from the Father. This is also a call to them to listen to Jesus. As is clear from Jesus’ command, what had happened points to his Resurrection.

ARCHDIOCESE OF NEWARK 2012 LENTEN REGULATIONS

1. The days of both Fast and Abstinence during Lent are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. The other Fridays of Lent are days of Abstinence.

2. On a day of Fast, only one (1) full meal is permitted. Those between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast.

3. On a day of Abstinence, no meat may be eaten. Those who have reached the age of 14 are obliged by the law of abstinence.

4. The obligation to observe the laws of Fast and Abstinence “substantially”, or as a whole, is a serious obligation.

5. The Fridays of the year, outside of Lent, are designated as days of penance, but each individual may substitute for the traditional abstinence from meat some other practice of voluntary self-denial as penance.

6. The time for fulfilling the Paschal Precept (Easter Duty*) extends from the First Sunday of Lent, Feb. 26, 2012 to the Solemnity of the Holy Trinity, June 3, 2012.

*Canon 920, §1. All the faithful, after they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, are bound by the obligation of receiving Communion at least once a year.

2013 MASS BOOK OPENING

Masses from January through December of 2013 will be scheduled. We will be taking intentions for 7:30 and 11:30 a.m.

For this reason we are limiting Mass reservations on opening day to a maximum of two weekend Masses or four weekday Masses. For example, one can reserve four weekday Masses or two weekday and two weekend Masses. Perhaps a birthday or anniversary might be an initial date–thus giving all Parishioners the opportunity to reserve the dates and times they may wish. Another way to remember your deceased loved ones would be to make donations to our Memorial Fund. The Memorial Fund allows us to purchase needed Vestments, Altar Linens, Vessels, etc. to be used at the celebration of Mass. Also available are Sanctuary Offerings which include the Sanctuary Candles in Church, the Rectory and the Convent. They burn weekly in memory of your loved ones as well as for special intentions: birthdays, anniversaries, improved health, etc. Cards are available announcing your donation to both the Memorial Fund and the Sanctuary Candles.

Myers came to the Garden State from his native Illinois where he had been Bishop of the Peoria Diocese. Prior to that he was Coadjutor Bishop of Peoria.
