Bemerton Heath Harlequins were formed in May 1989 with the amalgamation of two men’s clubs, Senior side Bemerton Athletic & Sunday side Moon FC, and one boys club , Bemerton Boys. All three clubs were previously very successful in their own right and were a major force in lo-cal soccer. Bemerton Athletic won the Wilts League on three occasions .Moon FC consistently won hon-ours in the Salisbury and Andover Leagues and Bemerton Boys won several trophies in the Bur-bage and Mid-Wilts Leagues. The Bemerton Athletic and Moon FC were by the end of 1988, looking for a fresh challenge therefore provisional talks of a merger were held with an entry into the Wessex League the No.1 priority. It’s history now that the talks were successful, Bemerton Heath Harlequins were formed and now operate from a magnificent clubhouse which was mainly built by self help. Since the merger, the men’s first eleven have established themselves as a major force in the Wessex League, and won the Wessex League Cup and finished 3rd in the League in season 2009/10. Our Weston Way ground continues to be improved every year with the superb help of everyone at the club, providing one of the best facilities in the area, thus recently winning and represent-ing the Sydenhams Wessex League an award from the Football Association for steps 5 & 6 in the country for best Groundsman in 2008/09.

Romsey equalise after Ryan Long’s cross hits Simon De’ath and nestles into the cor-ner right on half time.

Romsey drew level again in the 52nd min-ute after a su-perb assit is smashed home by Ryan Long.

Winchester go into the lead for the final time in the 75th minute when Chris Ma-son nods home from a contro-versially given freekick.

Romsey Town: A brief history The history of Romsey Town Football Club goes back to 1886 when a meeting took place at the Town Hall to consider the desirability of forming a football club in the town.

In the season 1889/90 they played their football at Alma Road, playing in local football. By the 1920’s they had gained entry into the Hampshire League and played their games at Priestlands which is now Romsey School. They had great success and won the Hampshire Intermediate Cup for the first time.

After the Second World War Romsey Town went on to produce some of their best attacking sides. In 1949 they reached the 2nd Round of the F.A. Cup and the final of the Hampshire Senior Cup in the same season. By 1955-56 they moved to their current home – the Bypass Ground – however they were relegated and the club fell into decline.

By the 1970’s the club started to climb out of the doldrums of lower league football and in 1974-75 won the Hampshire League Division 4 title. By the late 80’s Romsey had reached the Hampshire League Division 1 and in 1990 became the second club (after Bashley) to win the Wessex League title.

In the years to follow the club could not maintain the high standards and went into another decline until re-cently. In 2007 the club finished 3rd in Division 1 of the Wessex League and gained promotion to the Premier Division. After a good start to the 2007-08 campaign, the side suffered a poor second half of the season and finished 18th. The reserves finished 4th in Combination 2 and were beaten finalists in the Southampton Sen-ior Cup Final at St Mary’s.

for tonight’s game. We welcome the directors, players, staff and supporters from Bemerton. We seem to be at home a lot at the moment so not a

great deal of news, but we did travel to Hayling on Saturday and left with 3 points following a 2-1 vic-tory. The team played well and as usual we should have scored a lot more goals than we actually did but after having a clear cut penalty waved away Hayling were awarded one at the other end to take the lead. The referee evened things up by

giving us a penalty on the stroke of half time and Chalky white scored the winner early in the sec-

ond half. Tonight’s opposition will be a lot tougher as

Bemerton are being tipped by many to champions come next April so let’s hope for a good game and

get a win to keep us in the top half of the table
