Esso have a long history with the Hampshire League, since they were first elected as AGWI United in 1929/30 to the Hampshire League Division 2, but finished 14th and last place that first season. In 1935 they won the South-ampton Senior Cup. AGWI played in the Hampshire League until 1938/39, with a highest finish of 3rd in 1933/34. AGWI did not return to Hampshire League action immediately after the war, but in 1948/9 were elected to the 3rd division West. Like their earlier debut they had four poor seasons, finishing 14th and last on their comeback, with just 10 points from a possible 52. Renamed Esso (Fawley) in 1949/50, that season saw them up one place, to 13th then 9th and 14th again, before winning there first title, the Division 3 West Championship, in 1952/53, piping Blackfield and Langley on goal average. However Esso found Division 2 difficult, gathering only 6 points from 52, 13 points adrift at the bottom. Trying their hand in the 3rd Division East. The Oilers propped up the table again with 5 points from 40 in 1954/55. A reorganized 3rd Division the following year saw them second from bottom and they dropped out the league into the Southampton Junior League until 1960/61 when they were readmitted to 3rd Division. This time Esso could definitely consider it third time lucky, ending a respectable 4th and scoring 103 goals in 30 matches! Esso had won the Southampton Wednesday League in 1960/61, a feat repeated in 1967/8. They managed mid table secu-rity, finishing 4th again in 1963/64 before slipping to 16 and last in 1967/68. The following year the division was reorganized and Esso bottomed out again with there worst ever record of just 3 points! They were last again in 1969/70 and dropped out the county league for the 3rd time. This time the gap was 22 seasons before election to the 3rd Division in 1992/93. In the mean time in 1978/79 Esso won the Southampton Junior A Cup and were Champions of Division 3. Improvements continued as Esso won the Senior League Division 2 title in 1979/80, the Senior 1 title came in 1987/88. Back in the Hampshire League in 1992/1993, and leaning from past experience, they made good and finished in the top half of the table for there first few seasons. Their best season was 1994/95 when they finished champions in Division 3 and runners up to Romsey in the Southampton Senior Cup played at The Dell. In 1997/98 the club finished 5th in the Division 2, their highest position in Hampshire football ever. However the success did not stop and in 1998/99 the club was promoted into the top flight of Hampshire Football League for the first time. In 1999/2000 the club was promoted into the newly formed Hampshire Premier League. Renamed Fawley AFC, and now in the Wessex League 2nd Division the first 2 seasons were spent at the wrong end of the table. With the club re-organised and the young players meeting their potential 2005/6 saw Fawley AFC finish 7th. The league was renamed, and with the club now competing in Wessex Division 1 for 2006/7, the future is looking good with the charms of the Wessex league well and truly in their dreams and aspirations! The ultimate goal was achieved 2009/10 season when we were promoted to the Wessex Premier Division.

This weekend’s opposition is Fawley AFC in the Carlsberg FA Vase second qualifying round. With the final being played at Wem-bley there’s everything to play for. Last seasons results: 1-1 and 2-1 to Fawley.

Romsey Town: A brief history The history of Romsey Town Football Club goes back to 1886 when a meeting took place at the Town Hall to consider the desirability of forming a football club in the town.

In the season 1889/90 they played their football at Alma Road, playing in local football. By the 1920’s they had gained entry into the Hampshire League and played their games at Priestlands which is now Romsey School. They had great success and won the Hampshire Intermediate Cup for the first time.

After the Second World War Romsey Town went on to produce some of their best attacking sides. In 1949 they reached the 2nd Round of the F.A. Cup and the final of the Hampshire Senior Cup in the same season. By 1955-56 they moved to their current home – the Bypass Ground – however they were relegated and the club fell into decline.

By the 1970’s the club started to climb out of the doldrums of lower league football and in 1974-75 won the Hampshire League Division 4 title. By the late 80’s Romsey had reached the Hampshire League Division 1 and in 1990 became the second club (after Bashley) to win the Wessex League title.

In the years to follow the club could not maintain the high standards and went into another decline until re-cently. In 2007 the club finished 3rd in Division 1 of the Wessex League and gained promotion to the Premier Division. After a good start to the 2007-08 campaign, the side suffered a poor second half of the season and finished 18th. The reserves finished 4th in Combination 2 and were beaten finalists in the Southampton Sen-ior Cup Final at St Mary’s.

Hi and welcome back to the By-pass ground for today's FA Vase game against league rivals AFC Fawley. The last couple

of weeks have not been good for us result wise and we keep losing out by the

odd goal but on a more positive note we have been playing teams that I

woud have put in the top 6 at the start of the season so perhaps we are not

doing that bad. Today we welcome Paul Wiltshire and his squad for the game,

I have previously worked alongside Paul where we have taken

teams to Sweden and Hong Kong and although we get on well I really hope he

goes away with nothing today !!!
