The modern Newport IOW Football Club, with it‘s well appointed St George‘s Park facilities, presents a different picture from that con-

jured up by the club‘s origins on January 27th 1888. The actual date of formation can be established from the original minute book,

which is still in the club‘s possession. At that time, well over 100 years ago, Newport played on a piece of land known as Well‘s Field,

which later became known as Church Litten.

Newport became founder members of the Isle Of Wight League in 1898 and were League Champions of that competition on four oc-

casions, they were champions for the first time in 1908, adding further championships in 1909, 1910 and 1924. In 1927 the club be-

came members of the Hampshire League.

The 1935/36 season saw Newport reach the 2nd Round of the FA Cup for the first time, bowing out at Southall. Newport once again

reached the 2nd Round of the FA Cup in 1946 when they defeated Clapton Orient in the 1st Round, before losing at Aldershot. The

decade from the mid-1940s was a golden era for the club, with Newport appearing in the 1st Round of the FA Cup on a regular basis.

League clubs faced were Swindon Town in 1952/53 and again the following season, Watford in 1956/57 and Shrewsbury Town in

1958/59.

As the story moves into the 1960‘s, despite further Hampshire Senior Cup wins in 1961 and 1966, the club struggled both on and off

the pitch and in 1969 the club was relegated from Division One of the Hampshire League for the only time in its history.

In 1986, Newport became founder members of the Wessex League, finishing a creditable fourth place in that debut season. The fol-

lowing campaign was to be the club‘s last in the Wessex League when, despite finishing as runners up in the league, they were pro-

moted to the Southern League. Locally, on the Isle of Wight, the club has had great success in it‘s ―Gold Cup‖. This senior trophy has

been won by the club on no fewer than 34 occasions since it‘s first success in 1930.

The 2000/01 season was a highly successful one for the club with the Islanders winning the Dr Martens League Eastern Division

Championship. That season saw a massive 22 clean sheets kept, and an unbeaten run of 24 matches. Promotion to the top flight of

the Dr Martens League proved to be a major hurdle with the Islanders in what was to be their only season in the Premier Division.

Sadly by December of 2003/04 the club was in administration and the fight to keep the club alive was taken up by the supporters. The

Save Newport (FC) Action Group fought tooth and nail and were rewarded with a new Board with some directors coming from the

Supporters Trust. The 2004-05 Season saw Newport make its debut in the Isthmian League, the first season was a struggle but

through the legendary ‗port passion, the Islanders came good. The club were also proud to play host to the ESFA‘s England U19‘s

side versus Finland, the 2-0 home win saw a crowd of 2986 at St George‘s Park.

2007/08 saw the Port struggle on and off the pitch. The reigns were picked up by members of the Supporters Trust who engaged

manager Derek Ohren but with little funds for players, relegation was to follow at the end of the season. Better use of the clubs facili-

ties improved finances; this led to the signing of a completely new side which went on to finish sixth in the Wessex Premier in their

first season. Prospects look good as a new youth structure has led to players coming through into the first team squad and a return

to the Southern League is the ambition that everyone at the club shares.

Cameron Farley (Goalkeeper) Young keeper who has progressed through the youth ranks at Newport. Highly rated and

already breaking in to the first team squad

quently and is specialist penalty taker. Former AFC Bournemouth youth player who was signed from Brading Town in

summer 2008

Harry Ovnik (Defender) Young centre back who was signed from East Cowes Vics in the Summer of 2008. Has shown

great potential so far, intelligent distributor and reader of the game.

Martin McDonough (Defender) Deceptively powerful young defender who made his first team debut for the Port in the

Southern League aged 16. Spent the 2009/10 season at Cowes Sports where he was a regular in what was a tough sea-

son. Was quickly snapped up by Derek Ohren when Cowes were relegated last season.

Darren Powell (Midfield) The club Captain who was signed from Cowes Sports where he was a regular in their Wessex

League side. Darren is one of the most effective midfielders on the Island, whether on the flanks or in the middle. Again

the first team. Can play either as a central or left sided defender.

Mark Augustus (Midfield/Forward) Signed in 2010 from Cowes Sports where he was leading scorer. Can break from

and will be a great addition to the forward line.

Tom McInnes (Forward) Sharp striker signed from East Cowes Vics in Summer 2008 where he was the leading scorer.

Quick to react in the box he will snap up any chances going begging. Holds the ball up well and is good in the air he can

shows great promise for the future.

Steve Russell (Defender) Highly rated young defender who has worked his way from the reserves into the first team.

Tall, good in the air and keen to get forward where at set pieces he scores his fair share of goals.

his own words, with pace to burn. Previous clubs: Brading Town, Cowes Sports.

Matt Burford (Midfield) Experienced midfielder who runs the length of the field and often finds himself in the box. Good

pass of the ball and opportunist scorer. Joined the club in July 2011 from Brading Town. Other previous club: Cowes

Sports

Ross Phelps (Defender) Experienced right back who has been around a long time and excels in the role. Ross signed

for us 2011 from Brading Town. Other previous club: East Cowes Vics.

Jared Wetherick (Forward) One of the tallest at the Port, Jared towers over the opposition and known for his goal-

scoring prowess. A welcome attribute to the club when he joined our Reserves in 2007 from Brading Town.

Joe played at the Port previously, having enjoyed interim seasons with East Cowes Vics and Brading.

Ryan Oatley (Midfield) Ryan joined the club in 2009 from Cowes Youth. Playing with Port Reserves has paved the way

for him to finally make first team football where is settling in well. Much promise for the future.

Sam McInnes (Defender) Brother of Tom, Sam is now proving himself at first team level and another established find for

the future. Joined 2011/12 season from Binstead. Other previous club: Oakfield.

Romsey Town: A brief history The history of Romsey Town Football Club goes back to 1886 when a meeting took place at the Town Hall to consider the desirability of forming a football club in the town.

In the season 1889/90 they played their football at Alma Road, playing in local football. By the 1920‘s they had gained entry into the Hampshire League and played their games at Priestlands which is now Romsey School. They had great success and won the Hampshire Intermediate Cup for the first time.

After the Second World War Romsey Town went on to produce some of their best attacking sides. In 1949 they reached the 2nd Round of the F.A. Cup and the final of the Hampshire Senior Cup in the same season. By 1955-56 they moved to their current home – the Bypass Ground – however they were relegated and the club fell into decline.

By the 1970‘s the club started to climb out of the doldrums of lower league football and in 1974-75 won the Hampshire League Division 4 title. By the late 80‘s Romsey had reached the Hampshire League Division 1 and in 1990 became the second club (after Bashley) to win the Wessex League title.

In the years to follow the club could not maintain the high standards and went into another decline until re-cently. In 2007 the club finished 3rd in Division 1 of the Wessex League and gained promotion to the Premier Division. After a good start to the 2007-08 campaign, the side suffered a poor second half of the season and finished 18th. The reserves finished 4th in Combination 2 and were beaten finalists in the Southampton Sen-ior Cup Final at St Mary‘s.

Today we welcome the players, offi-cials, and supporters of Newport. We come in today‘s game off the back of

one of the strangest games ever when we came away from Moneyfields losing

6-5. It was certainly a game of two halves as we went in at half time 5-2 down but won the second half 3-1. It

still wasn‘t enough but the players de-serve a lot of praise for the character shown and the goals were scored by

Simon 2 Ryan 2 and Macs 1. Lets hope we can keep the back door shut today
