Ron’s Ramblings . . . If you’ve been in our worship services the past few weeks, you’ve already experienced the two new ‘supplemental hymnals’ that we’ve been using in worship. The Faith We Sing has been available to churches since the year 2000 and the Worship & Song hymnal since 2011. Both of these hymnals are not designed to take the place of The United Methodist Hymnal, which is the current basic standard for our congregational singing and liturgy, but to add some more recently composed Christian hymns, as well as some old favorites that missed inclusion in The United Methodist Hymnal. It is my hope that you are already experiencing how these two new hymnals are enhancing worship in the traditional services at FUMC!Please mark Sunday, December 15th, 7:00 p.m. on your calendars as the date and time for our annual Christmas presentation in the sanctuary of the church. This year our Chancel Choir, “Seasonal Singers,” handbell ringers, and members of the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra will be joined by our Sunday Night Life Children’s Choir to bring to all in attendance the story of the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ! I believe that you and yours will truly be blessed by this presentation. The music is exciting, as well as uplifting. You won’t want to miss it!!

The Cup of Our Life: November 5th – December 17th, 9:30 – 11:00 a.m., CLC 209, Marlene Bush, Facilitator. The Cup of Our Life, offers practical suggestions and meaningful content to aid in developing a deeper and more intimate relationship with God. Organized on a daily basis, participants are encouraged to use an ordinary cup (or mug) to invite God more closely into one's pain, suffering, joys, hopes and struggles. Six major themes are explored in the spiritual life, each one followed by prayer suggestions including litanies, creative writing, ideas for reflection and journal-keeping, and a celebratory ritual. Cost of book is $10.00.

Praying the Hours: Tuesdays, November 5th - 26th, 12:10 – 12:50 p.m., CLC201; Teresa Holt, Facilitator. Praying the Hours is a tradition of praying to God at certain times of the day. This is an old Jewish custom that was continued in the early church and continues today in the Orthodox, Catholic, and mainline Protestant traditions. We will look at the possibilities in the UMC Book of Worship, as well as those by our Episcopal and Catholic neighbors and participate in a 15 minute mid-day prayer service. Participants will be encouraged to pray 3-4 times a day for one week utilizing the services (via internet, phone apps, etc). Cost is dependent upon optional resources acquired. For more information or to register, go to www.fumchotsprings.org and click on adults or contact Teresa at 501-623-6668, ext 116 or [email protected] and Soul Artists Needed! Our annual Art and Soul Advent Exhibit will be based on the Matthew scriptures this year (Matthew 24:36-44, Matthew 3:1-12, Matthew 11:2-11, Matthew 1:18-25, Matthew 2:13-23). We would love to have your art contribution reflecting the wonderful Advent and Christmas Story! We are looking for painters, photographers, quilters, etc. The art will be on display in the prayer room (front of Sanctuary) during Advent with our community showing on December 1st from 4-6 p.m. during the annual Advent Celebration (Hanging of the Greens, Advent Fair, Chili Supper, and Labyrinth). Applications are online at www.fumchotsprings.org – click on adults and then Art and Soul. For more information, contact Teresa at [email protected].

We are excited to have drawings of the twelve disciples of Jesus currently on display in our Prayer Room. Rev. John Polk, part-time local pastor and Minister of Visitation at FUMC Hot Springs has worked hard detailing his interpretation of Jesus’ disciples. Along with the drawings, he has provided short biographies of each disciple. We are thankful that John is sharing his gift with our church and community. The Prayer Room is located in the front of the sanctuary behind the choir loft. Come enjoy the “Twelve Disciples of Jesus” exhibit throughout this fall season!

FUMC Hot Springs Preparing Float for Hot Springs Christmas Parade!

Come see us in the Hot Springs Christmas Parade on Monday, December 9th at 6:30 p.m. The parade will take place in downtown Hot Springs on Central Avenue (from Whittington to Orange Street). This year’s parade theme is a spin off of “It’s a Wonderful Life” and is called “Let God’s Wonderful Light Shine in Hot Springs!” A team is forming to build our “glow in the dark” float! If you are creative and want to help, please email Michelle Wilkins at [email protected].

Create Family Advent Traditions!Sunday, December 1st from 4 to 7 p.m. come learn more about the true meaning of Christmas! From 4 to 5 p.m., we will have craft stations set up for the kids in the Christian Life Center’s children’s wing. Parents will be able to enjoy spending some quality time making Advent-themed crafts with their child. From 5 to 6 p.m., stay for a good meal and get involved in some serious taste-testing with the Annual Chili Cook-Off! Afterwards, from 6 to 6:45 p.m. walk over to the sanctuary for a beautiful Hanging of the Greens service. Our children will be singing and participating in this meaningful service, so come support them! Make this an annual tradition for your family. It will be a tradition that you can share together for years to come!

We need your help as we serve our upcoming generation of leaders! Can you spare your lunch hour one day a week? We are looking for adults to go to Langston Elementary (which is just 1 mile from our church) and have lunch with a Pre-K to 4th grade child one day a week. By doing this consistently, you will show the child that God loves them through your support and caring spirit. No experience is needed and there is no teaching involved! These children just need caring adults that will be there to listen and to talk to them about how things are going in their lives. Mentors serve as role models, advocates, friends and advisors. If you are interested, please contact Michelle Wilkins @ (501) 318-3977.

Imagine churches joining together to reach out and touch lives for Christ while revealing His love through acts of service. Plan now to join us for ShareFest 2013 on November 2nd at Langston Elementary from 9 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. We will roll up our sleeves and help paint, clean, plant, refurbish, and beautify the school which is located within 1 mile of our church. Everyone is invited to participate! Let’s shine our light as a church and unite in purpose, prayer and service for ShareFest 2013!

Outreach MinistriesCANDY POIRIER

This month we will be finishing up our fall UMY Bible Study, “Chain Gang: Prisoners in the Bible.” We’ve been learning lessons in spiritual freedom and bondage from 11 different real prisoners of the Bible--Joseph, Samson, Hanani, Daniel, Jeremiah, Jehoiachin, John the Baptist, Barabbas, Jesus, Peter, and Paul. It’s been an exciting study with some of my favorite Bible characters and stories! What has God taught you about your spiritual freedom from a Biblical prisoner? Take a moment to examine one of these amazing stories this month and maybe even strike up a conversation with one of our Underground youth about what life lessons and principles God is revealing to them through our study: Genesis 39-41 (Joseph), Judges 16:4-31 (Samson), 2 Chronicles 16:1-10 (Hanani), Daniel 6 (Daniel), Jeremiah 38:1-13 (Jeremiah), Jeremiah 52:31-34 (Jehoiachin), Matthew 11:1-19, 14:1-12 (John the Baptist), Luke 23:13-25 (Barabbas), 1 Peter 3:13-22 (Jesus), Acts 12:1-19 (Peter), Acts 16:16-40 (Paul). It’s also been a great fall start for our Worship Arts Team! They did a great job in ConneXion Worship in October and will be back on November 17th to lead us more!

SAMARITAN’S PURSE—OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD: We will be collecting the shoeboxes for Samaritan‘s Purse November 11th - November 20th at the

Welcome Center of the Christian Life Center. The information for the boxes is included at the Welcome Center’s tables in both the Sanctuary and the CLC. The shoe boxes are shipped to less fortunate children around the world. This is an outreach that we participate in each year and the blessings you give to these

children are unforgettable. Thank you for your continued donations to this mission!

ALTERNATIVE CHRISTMAS: This year we are offering an Alternative Christmas market at our 2013 Thanksgiving Dinner that will

offer you a way to shop for family and friends while supporting missions for people locally and world-wide. You can give these gifts in the name of those you love on Wednesday, November 20th from 5-6:30 p.m. in the CLC atrium. We will have tables with items to sell to benefit Cookson Hills Mission, a native

American ministry of the the UMC in Cookson Hills, OK; Rice Depot in Little Rock; Tradewinds of Hope, a fair trade organization; UMCOR/SERRV, a non-profit fair trade organization; and the

opportunity to make a contribution to our Open Arms Food Pantry in honor of someone. THE CARING PLACE AUCTION:

This year-round mission project provides continued income for The Caring Place scholarship fund. Please take sale items to Godbehere Auction Company at 901 Airport Road and let them know the items are for The Caring Place. Items may be delivered Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday between the hours of 8

a.m. - 4 p.m. If you have questions, call 501-767-4499 and ask for Joe, Ed, or Matt. If you cannot take your items, contact Ken Krabbe at 501-622-9341. If you would like to volunteer with The Caring Place, they

are always needing volunteers Monday through Thursday. Contact Dian at 501-623-2881.

Ring those BELLS!The Outreach Committee invites you to join them in ringing the bells for the Salvation Army at the Kroger store at 4407 Central Ave. (near Hobby Lobby). Since this is our 4th year to ring bells, we have committed to ring bells on four days; Thursday, Dec. 5th, Saturday, Dec. 7th, Thursday, Dec 12th, and Saturday, Dec. 14th. The ringing begins at 10:00 a.m. and ends at 7:00 p.m. each day. The days will be divided into nine time slots of one hour each and we need two or more volunteers for each hour. Families are encouraged to participate with their children. This presents a great opportunity to emphasize the importance of giving during the Christmas season. Your first chance to sign up will be at the Thanksgiving dinner, Wednesday, November 20th. Sign up sheets will be available at all three church services on Sunday, November 24th. For more information or for early sign-up contact Claire Wisman at 501-609-9616.

Upcoming Holiday Mission Projects

NEW CHURCH TOUR: If you have never seen all of our campus or heard the history of FUMC

Hot Springs and would like to know more about the church, every 2nd Sunday of the month we will have a tour of the church. Mark your calendars and

join us Sunday, November 17th for the next tour. Your tour guides will meet you in the atrium of the

Christian Life Center at 9:30 a.m. If you would like to see and know more about the history of our church and where classes are located, this is a great

way to meet lay members of the church and become more familiar with our campus!
