roof LINES Volume 10, Number 8 (502) 425-1760 August 2017 springdalechurch.org August 20 — 6 to 8 PM Invite your neighbors! All are welcome to our third annual neighborhood party! In 2015 we had a Hole in the Road party since Brownsboro Road was washed out just west of the church. In 2016 we had a Whole Road party since the road was once again operational (but any excuse for a party!) This year we are excited to inaugurate a new name that we are hoping will “stick”: the BROWNSBORO ROAD BASH! Invite your friends and neighbors to come and join us for a back-to-school, summer’s-almost-over, can-you- believe-it’s-still-this-hot party happening in and around Springdale Presbyterian Church from 6-8PM on Sunday, August 20. With inflatables, face painting, a fire truck, corn hole, relays and more games for kids and grownups, an inside cooling off zone for kids, free food and drinks (hot dogs, cheese pizza, popcorn, cotton candy, snow cones, lemonade and water) and information tables about organizations that meet at Springdale, there is something for EVERYONE! Contact our chairperson, Jo Locke, or just come to one of the prep meetings immediately following worship most Sunday mornings until August 20. And since you asked... ...our next OUTDOOR WORSHIP SERVICE and PICNIC is coming up on August 27 Mark your calendars: Sunday, August 27 th we’ll be on the road again for our end-of-summer Outdoor Worship and Picnic (this time we’ll be grilling out burgers and hot dogs and everyone is invited to bring a side or dessert to share!) Once again, we’ll enjoy worship and fellowship in the Parklands of Floyds Fork. In early June, we enjoyed gathering at Beckley Creek Park, at the PricewaterhouseCoopers LLC Pavilion. This time, we’ll be trying out another wonderful location in the Parklands complex – the Woodland Pavilion, in Broad Run Park. (Continued on page 4)

Hello Friends, I wanted to pass on the news that the day before sitting down to write this, we received word from Denise Whittington that she will be leaving her position as Music Director. As most of you know, Denise has been here at Springdale for five years, arriving here in the wake of some residual turmoil in the music ministries here. During her time with us, Denise has been a friendly presence as she’s led the Adult Choir, the Praise Team, and the Handbell Choir, as well as providing musical support to the Preschool and Vacation Bible School. She has organized Cantatas and Follies, and has worked to bring special musicians and musical programming here as well. She has provided our congregation with masterful, heartfelt, and moving solo musical performance and accompaniment on both organ and piano. In the coming days, I will be working closely with our Personnel Ministry Team and the Session to provide for short-term maintenance of our music ministries and programming; as well as developing more long-term solutions to our staffing needs. Whatever the short-term details, rest assured that our musical programs and excellent music within worship will continue without interruption during this transition time. As you will read in Denise’s letter, her last day with us will be Monday, September 4th; her last Sunday to worship with us will be the day before, on September 3rd. I hope that between now and then, you’ll take the time to wish Denise well, and to offer her all of God’s blessings as she nears completion of her doctoral work, and beyond that, wherever her passions and musicality will take her. Grace and peace, Dwain

July 24, 2017 Dear Springdale Presbyterian Church, Please accept my resignation as Music Director of Springdale Presbyterian Church effective Monday, September 4, 2017. I want to thank the Springdale church for allowing me to serve as Director of Music for the last five years. I have certainly enjoyed the music, the wonderful worship services, and the special music services that we have experienced. I have enjoyed working with all of the ensembles and playing piano and organ for the services. I hope that my music and service has touched the lives of many. I know that I have enjoyed being a part of the ministry through music and worship at Springdale. Please know that as I begin a new chapter in my life, I will always keep Springdale in my thoughts and prayers. Thank you, Denise Whittington

Thank you notes from the congregation… Dear Friends, I want to thank everyone for the wonderful cards, notes and calls. They were very appreciated and were of great help in my recovery. The bulletin and the copies of the sermons kept me being a part of the church and its activities. I am looking forward to seeing all of you soon. With friendship, Leonard “Jim” Smith _______________________________________ Dear Friends, My son, Roger, and I want to thank you all for prayers on his behalf as he slowly heals from laser brain surgery on July 3rd. It was successful, but with a slight delay before he progresses from ICU to acute rehab! Barbara McClain _______________________________________ Dear Friends at Springdale Presbyterian, I am so appreciative of the care, concerns, thoughts and prayers offered to God during my recent surgery and recovery. The cards, the phone calls and the food were all amazing and I know they contributed to my speedy recovery! I have only been “in the fold” for a relatively short time yet I feel that Jeff & I were held close and cared for. Thank you so very much for everything. I am very happy to be back in the office serving God and you. Love to all in Christ, ~Michelle Jablonski

called into community OUTDOOR WORSHIP & PICNIC IN THE PARK—SUNDAY, AUGUST 27

This facility is very similar to the PwC pavilion where we worshiped June 4 - with striking architectural design, complete accessibility to people with disabilities, integral restrooms, power and water hookups, and ample parking immediately adjacent to the pavilion. It also has nearly identical amenities, with a playground/sprayground off of the same parking area, walking, hiking, and bicycling trails, creek access for kayaking/canoeing if that’s your thing, and other features, as well.

We’ll start gathering at 10 a.m. to set up and for the musicians to rehearse. When you arrive, find a seat and enjoy the surroundings. You’ll find it hard to believe you are near a major metropolitan area! Once again, there are picnic tables and there is plenty of room for you to bring stadium or lawn chairs if that’s more comfortable (or a cushion to sit on, if you’d like!) Worship will begin at 10:30 a.m. and will be simple and great for all ages. We’ll plan to eat a little before noon and have the pavilion until 2 p.m. Folks are welcome to stay and enjoy each others company after lunch (possibly play a game or two of corn hole or checkers) or to head over to the playground/sprayground or to hike or whatever after lunch!

Broad Run Park is very easy to get to – from the church just head east to I-265 (Gene Snyder Freeway) then head south to exit 17 (Bardstown Road exit.) Exit and go south on Bardstown Road for about 4 miles and watch for the Broad Run Park sign on your left. The left turn from Bardstown Road onto Broad Run Parkway is 4.3 miles from the Gene Snyder. We are also preparing yellow signs with red letters that say “SPRINGDALE PRESBYTERIAN” with a red arrow and the words “ALL ARE WELCOME” which will be posted at the turn off of Bardstown Road and along Broad Run Parkway to point you to the Woodland Pavilion (which will be on your left just after the sprayground/playground.)

Maps will be available at the Welcome Center in the church beginning the first Sunday in August and will also be available on the website. Spread the word to fellow Springdale members (this might be a great time to carpool with friends from the church parking lot) and invite your friends you’ve been thinking about inviting to church. This should be another great time together.

Kentucky Council of Churches many voices, one Word

From a letter to the churches in Kentucky from the President of the Kentucky Council of Churches...

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, We honor and bid our grateful farewell to Interim Executive Director Peggy Hinds, and we raise our glad welcome to our new and permanent Executive Director, the Rev. Dr. Donald K. Gillett, II. For the past two years, our organization has flourished under the steady and inspiring leadership of the Rev. Dr. Peggy Hinds, our Interim Executive Director. With Peggy’s dedicated efforts, the Council Continued and increased its advocacy for social justice in Kentucky, providing compelling testimony in Frankfort, and aligning the Council with other local non-profit organizations to strengthen our message and mission. Her tireless support of the Council has been a benefit to all of us who worked with her and we thank her for her outstanding service. As you may know, during these last months a diligent search has been underway for a permanent Executive Director to lead us forward. We are proud to announced the call of the Rev. Dr. Donald K. Gillett, II into that position for the Council. Rev. Gillett is an inspiring and well-qualified leader with a heart for ecumenism and the beloved kingdom we are called to build. As we engage critical issues of faith and hope, and continue our work on ending the toxic effects of poverty, racism, and violence, we give thanks for this servant-leader who has taken up the mantle of so many others who have lit the path before him. Yours in Christ, The Rev. Kent Gilbert President
