Roots, rock, bluegrassUnknown to many people, Africa and
banjos are as natural a combination as notes and a staff. Dom Flemons,
Rhiannon Giddens and Justin Robinson are three bluegrass musicians who tour
nationally and give short history lessons. Their band is called the Carolina
Chocolate Drops. African instruments such as the akonting and the xalam are
preludes to banjos originally made by American slaves.

Ancient, shriveled and freshSultanas made their way to the
English-speaking world by way of the Ottoman Empire. These golden raisins
made it stateside in 1872, when California vineyardist William
Thompson imported a Sultanina seedless grape cutting. He marketed
the grape as the “Thompson Seedless,” giving birth to the California
raisin industry.

Did you know…Spain is the largest producer of
olive oil? It is the only oil that can be made from a fruit or vegetable
solely by pressing. The highest quality of oils are made by
mechanical pressing, meaning no heat or chemicals are used during
the production process, and prepared within 24 hours of
harvesting the olives.
