WHAT IS MAD? Kingston’s Midtown Arts District (MAD) is a coalition – of artists, businesses, residents, the City

of Kingston, and organizations and groups serving Midtown.

MAD is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization – formed to help Midtown Kingston develop and revitalize its arts district.

MAD is the heart of Midtown – at the axis of Broadway, Cornell Street and Greenkill Avenue.

MAD is strengthening our local economy – in nearly 200 arts and crafts workrooms, manufacturing sites, showrooms, studios, galleries, video and recording facilities, performance spaces, nonprofit arts programs and artist live/work lofts.

BACKSTORY Kingston’s 19th-century industrial district suffered decades of neglect until 2013 when a transformation began. Artists, artisans, businesses and residents started to discuss how an arts district could spark economic development.

Four manufacturing businesses employing more than 60 people (Bailey Pottery Equipment, R&F Handmade Paints, ColorPage and American Made Monster Studios), two developers of 150+ artist live/work lofts (Mike Piazza and RUPCO) and Cornell Street Studios took the lead.

Over the next two years, 70 volunteers researched arts districts in other cities; strategized about how to create and organize MAD; and identified ways to create inclusive economic and community revitalization for residents, artists and businesses.

In 2016, nearly 40 buildings are devoted to arts-based uses and more than 300 jobs and arts livelihoods

have been generated. Several new projects are underway too, including lofts for technology creatives, a film production facility and additional artist studios.

WE’VE ONLY JUST BEGUN• Dozens of buildings have been reclaimed, property values

have increased and arts-related jobs are growing.

• Increased street activity promotes public safety, retail traffic and sales tax revenues.

• Working with the Midtown community will help the City attract grants for public improvements and neighborhood development.

• Services and programs for artists, businesses, residents and visitors will continue to grow.

GET INVOLVED! MAD is working like mad to create an equitable, inclusive and wildly successful Midtown revitalization. We’re an all-volunteer army in the process of forming workgroups – Artists, Businesses and Midtown Community – and we need you!
