Introduction 1
I. INTRODUCTION
A. Historical Background In 1935 a monastery named Saint Albert’s Priory (also known as
Rosaryhill House of Studies) was erected on the slopes of a hill
above Happy Valley. It was a Dominican House of Studies serving
as the training centre of missionary priests of different nationalities
from Asia and Europe. The House of Studies was a nucleus for the
irradiation of apostolic activities particularly in China and other parts
of Asia. It also rendered social services to the community when
Hong Kong was in times of difficulties. During the years of the
Second World War it was a centre for the dependents of the civil
internees and for the prisoners of war under the International Red
Cross, and part of the building was used as a rehabilitation centre.
In 1959 Rosaryhill School ceased to be a House of Studies for
priests. It was then transformed into a school. Two factors
determined the opening of the school: the availability of the space
and the great influx of Chinese refugees fleeing from China. The
Hong Kong government encountered a great problem of providing
schools for the growing numbers of children.
The school was set up as a Primary School, with classes for
Intermediate Kindergarten to Primary 4 level, with a total population
of 500 students. As the school was situated in the Mid-Levels and
the transportation was inconvenient, a private Department of
Transportation was set up with 7 school buses in the first year.
The school flourished. The Secondary Section was set up in
September 1962.

Introduction 2
An important change came with the erection of the new building:
the old House of Studies was not sufficient to accommodate the
growing number of students, neither was it equipped to comply with
the requirements of the Education Ordinance. A contract with a
Chinese Construction Company was made and a new school
building was erected in exchange for the ownership of about two
thirds of the land. It resulted in the residential building of Monte
Rosa in front of the school, and what was then the new Rosaryhill
School.

Introduction 4
Physical Description
The school building is a rectangular structure, divided into two
parts (formerly called Boys’ and Girls’ Section) by a central portion
comprising the common facilities of auditorium, chapel, library and
special rooms. The back wing, or southern wing, is mainly
occupied by the Primary Section. The 6th floor of both sides
originally was built as private quarters. The eastern side has been
remodeled to accommodate the Business Studies Section while the
western side is used as the residential quarters for the friars of the
community.
The total area of the school is 10,000 square meters,
surrounded by natural vegetation and trees: an ideal environment
for study and healthy growth. The car park for the school buses
occupies part of the grounds. There are ample playgrounds, both
internal and external, for the pleasure and recreation of our
students.
