  • Introduction 1

    I. INTRODUCTION

    A. Historical Background In 1935 a monastery named Saint Albert’s Priory (also known as

Rosaryhill House of Studies) was erected on the slopes of a hill

above Happy Valley. It was a Dominican House of Studies serving

as the training centre of missionary priests of different nationalities

from Asia and Europe. The House of Studies was a nucleus for the

irradiation of apostolic activities particularly in China and other parts

of Asia. It also rendered social services to the community when

Hong Kong was in times of difficulties. During the years of the

Second World War it was a centre for the dependents of the civil

internees and for the prisoners of war under the International Red

Cross, and part of the building was used as a rehabilitation centre.

In 1959 Rosaryhill School ceased to be a House of Studies for

priests. It was then transformed into a school. Two factors

determined the opening of the school: the availability of the space

and the great influx of Chinese refugees fleeing from China. The

Hong Kong government encountered a great problem of providing

schools for the growing numbers of children.

The school was set up as a Primary School, with classes for

Intermediate Kindergarten to Primary 4 level, with a total population

of 500 students. As the school was situated in the Mid-Levels and

the transportation was inconvenient, a private Department of

Transportation was set up with 7 school buses in the first year.

The school flourished. The Secondary Section was set up in

    September 1962.

  • Introduction 2

An important change came with the erection of the new building:

the old House of Studies was not sufficient to accommodate the

growing number of students, neither was it equipped to comply with

the requirements of the Education Ordinance. A contract with a

Chinese Construction Company was made and a new school

building was erected in exchange for the ownership of about two

thirds of the land. It resulted in the residential building of Monte

Rosa in front of the school, and what was then the new Rosaryhill

    School.

  • Introduction 4

    Physical Description

The school building is a rectangular structure, divided into two

parts (formerly called Boys’ and Girls’ Section) by a central portion

comprising the common facilities of auditorium, chapel, library and

special rooms. The back wing, or southern wing, is mainly

occupied by the Primary Section. The 6th floor of both sides

originally was built as private quarters. The eastern side has been

remodeled to accommodate the Business Studies Section while the

western side is used as the residential quarters for the friars of the

    community.

The total area of the school is 10,000 square meters,

surrounded by natural vegetation and trees: an ideal environment

for study and healthy growth. The car park for the school buses

occupies part of the grounds. There are ample playgrounds, both

internal and external, for the pleasure and recreation of our

    students.

    Language Policy

We had implemented Putonghua courses in S.1 – S.3 many years ago.

Recently we have extended the course to S.4 and S.5 as an elective

subject. On every Day 3, there is a Putonghua activity during lunch when

the students will play games while using the language.

We have recruited 4 qualified English native speakers to take up all the

S.1 English lessons so that the students will be exposed to English

environment throughout the 10 lessons in each cycle and develop a habit

of communicating in English. Every Day 6 is designated as English

Speaking Day for the whole school and a lot of activities such as Fun Fair,

Halloween Fair, Flea Market, Inter-class Choral Speaking Competition etc.

are organized to reinforce the use of English during everyday life. Besides,

an English Tour, which is on voluntary basis, to English-speaking countries

    is organized during summer vacation.

    Assessment

The school year is divided into 2 semesters. In each semester there is

an examination and regular tests to assess the progress and achievement

    Rosaryhill School Annual Report (2002-2003)

  • Academic Information 25of the students. There is also a uniform test on each subject in S.1-S.5 in

each semester to monitor the variation between classes.

Recently, more emphasis has been put on course works and project

works as a mean of assessment instead of an “once-for-all” written

    examination.

Assessment reports will be issued 4 times a year. The weighting of

tests and examinations in the students’ report is shown in the following

    table:

    Whole Year Assessment 1st Term (40%) 2nd Term (60%)

Test Mark 20% Exam. Mark 80% Test Mark 20% Exam. Mark 80% Uniform Test (30-50%) Other Tests Course works

    Reading reports/Project works (10-30%) 1st Exam. (January)

Uniform Test (30-50%) H.K.A.T. Other Tests Course works

Reading reports/ Project works (10-30%) 2nd Exam. (June)

Overall: Coursework (about 30%), Written tests & Examinations (about 70%)

    Remedial Works

We also put in a lot of effort to help those lower academic achievers.

Remedial classes on English Language, Chinese Language and

Mathematics were implemented at S.1 to S.3 levels. Students who need

special care and attention are extracted from the classes during these

lessons to attend a smaller group teaching by experienced teachers.

For less motivated students in S.1 and S.2, they are requested to

attend a Study Interest Group once a week after school hour.

Summer Tutorial Class for New S.1 Students

It is a programme run during the summer in August and last for about 3

weeks. It consists of English and Mathematics lessons together with

games and activities. The purpose of this programme is to acquaint the

new students with the school environment and to know each other better

    at a relaxed atmosphere.
