Rotary Club of Singapore President Installation Dinner

By: Rtn Uttam Kripalani

It was the 84th Rotary Club of Singapore President Installation dinner on 1st July 2018. Our very own signature event to kick-start a new Rotary New Year with fellow Rotarians, friends and family members. Just like all the previous installation dinners, it sets the tone and manner for the year ahead full of vibrancy, enthusiasm and inclusiveness. In support of incoming President Mark Wang, more than 300 guests attended our installation dinner and they came from different parts of the world.

Ms Indranee Rajah, the very poised and attractive person, who was our guest of honour mentioned a story of how she was petrified when she had to speak at an Interact speaking contest, but was delighted that she managed to be declared a runner up. Was this the forerunner of her career as a lawyer and then such an eminent parliamentarian and Minister? Ms Indranee Rajah is Minister, Prime Minister’s Office, Second Minister for Finance and Second Minister for Education. She is a Member of Parliament representing Tanjong Pagar GRC.

She went straight to the hearts of all the Rotarians and Interactors who were present at one of the most colourful and enjoyable Installation dinners, when outgoing President Keith Harrison handed over the Presidential chain of office to incoming President Mark Wang.

In keeping with the tradition the Leo Cresson Trophy and the President’s jewel were duly presented to the stars of the evening.

Also in play was the large cheque for $ 80,000 which was presented to Football Plus as our major project donation for Rotary Year 2017-2018.

Outgoing President Rotarian Keith Harrison in very dramatic form came on to the stage and highlighted many of the wonderful projects which the Club had organised during the year. A total of over 50 projects, statistically almost one a week during the year, a rare feat not only in Singapore but in neighbouring countries including Malaysia, Indonesia and Philippines. He did not miss out on the list of awards won during the year, which re-emphasised the club’s eminent position as one of the leading clubs in the District.

In a more subdued manner President Rotarian Mark promised to continue the traditions and assured all that he would lead the club to more projects, fellowship and fame. He then went on to introduce the new Board and invited the GOH to share the stage with the dynamic new team.

Minister Indranee Rajah, spoke very eloquently and congratulated all Rotarians for taking such an active part in the Society not only in Singapore but in many parts of the world. She highlighted the vital role that our Club over many years has helped through the Community, vocational, International and Youth services. She went on to encourage a spirit of giving and strengthening partnerships between the community and the Government. “The work of the club will only become more vital as the nation seeks to foster a more caring and cohesive society”. She went on to say that beyond the “hardware” we must develop “heartware”.

It was a wonderful evening of fellowship amongst friends and family members. We witnessed two different styles of leadership between the outgoing and incoming Presidents. However, they both share the very same essence that Rotarians are people of action and Service Above Self.

We wish President Mark Wang and his dynamic board of Directors every success in this Rotary Year 2018 to 2019.

President Mark invited Rtn Sylvia Chung to

introduce the Guest Speaker, Ms Aziza Ali who is a former restaurant owner and chef. She is now a food consultant, artist (she has held two solo exhibitions) and an author of four books on food and heritage. She is also a very special event organiser incorporating food and heritage themes for the past 15 years. She is a well sought after speaker and has given talks at the National Museum, Libraries, Universities and other Rotary Clubs. Ms Aziza thanked President Mark and PP

Jimmy Ooi for the invitation to speak at the Club and added that she would try to squeeze

her talk on her life experiences to the allocated 20 minutes! She spoke briefly of her restaurant, a well known Malay restaurant in Singapore opened in 1979. Ms Aziza recounted many interesting stories of her catering experiences in New Zealand, United Kingdom, USA and Canada. She added that her food journey had given her the opportunity to meet so many people in various unfamiliar countries. Ms Aziza graciously answered questions posed to her by members at the end of her talk.

President Mark called on Rtn Peter Koh to extend the Club’s vote of thanks to the Speaker. Rtn Peter noted that Ms Aziza was an exceptional speaker, speaking on Singapore’s best topic, that is – food! He added that it was a privilege to have Ms Aziza speak to the Club.

The Guide to Daily Living

Before doing the things we want to do, consider first, the

Precepts of the guide. Ask ourselves these 4 questions and

act upon them:

First: Have I spent some time in self-examination?

Second: Have I spent quality time with my family?

Third: Have I given my best to my work?

Fourth: Have I given some time to someone near and far?

The Guide, in fact, encompasses the 4 parts of the Object of Rotary.

The Four-Way Test

Of the things we think, say or do:

Is it the truth?

Is it fair to all concerned?

Will it build goodwill and better friendship?

Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
