Part A: Executive Summary In today’s modern society, people are often caught up in the materialistic world in their pursuit for financial stability and monetary freedom. This often causes people to neglect the true wealth of their life, which is HEALTH. And to make things worse, new diseases and illnesses that have never been heard of, had been popping up in the news headlines every now and then. We hear more and more incidences of people suffering from various health problems in the news nowadays. According to statistics, the number of people suffering from heart attack is getting higher and higher as the years go by. To add to the seriousness of the problem, the average age of the victims is also getting lower over time. Adults as young as 30 years old can be prone to heart attack due to their daily lifestyle. Therefore, the Rotaract Club of Penang has launched a project called the Ballz Game to promote the importance of healthy lifestyle and the benefits of exercising. This project is a year-long project which will take place from June 2010 till May 2011. The project is conceived through a series of sports that has to do with balls. The basic idea of the Ballz Game is that every month, we will carry out different “ball sports” to learn and experience the excitement that all these sports have to offer. Part E: “The Making of . . . ” Ballz Game The Ballz Game concept came about during a “Mamak Session” with my Vice President who is also our club’s Professional Development Director, Alvin Chong. It was the start of the term and we were clueless on what we should do for the professional development avenue. However, we remembered from one of the sessions in DRA that professional development is also taken as personal development, which means self improvement or picking up a new skill. After a short brainstorming session, we had decided to carry out a fresh and unique project known as the Ballz Game. Ever since, Alvin and myself joined Rotaract, we have seen many business talks and seminars being carried out as Professional Development which was, without a doubt, great but, what we wanted to do was to take on the Professional Development Avenue from a different angle. Therefore, for this term, we have decided to incorporate sport into our Professional Development project. After proposing the project to our club members we finally carried out our very 1st Ballz Game, which was Bowling on 11th July 2010. The turnout for our 1st game was not very convincing but we managed to learn a thing or two from the Bowling Coach of SEGI College, Mr Lee. As we proceeded to the next Ballz Game which was Futsal, the turnout started to show signs of improvements. We even got a few potential members to join us in our game. We moved on to our 3rd Ballz Game which was Paintball and the 4th, Table Tennis. During the Table Tennis session, we were taught by our very own Alvin Chong who so happens to have received some Table Tennis coaching in USM. As for the 5th Game which was Golf, the members were taught by Louis and myself. We used to be champions during our younger days and so we shared the basics of Golf to those who were new to it. The 6th Ballz Game which was Basketball was taught by Ji Xiang, a school team basketball player. During Basketball, we were joined by Interactors from various schools and also by our close friends who were interested to know more about Rotaract. Squash was the 7th Ballz Game and we were lucky enough to get a friend of our club, Nicholas Pasqual, who so happens to be the No.1 player in Penang to share with us some knowledge on Squash. Shaun Lim, a Tennis Coach was our teacher during our 8th Ballz Game, Tennis. That session had the most turnout among all Ballz Games - a total of 16 participants inclusive of members and friends. During Ballz Game #9, PP Kelvin Thum who has a fair share of knowledge in Snooker enlightened us and taught us a thing or two about the game. We completed the finale of our year-long project with the final two Ballz Game which was Ballz Game #10, Captain Ball and Ballz Game #11, Dodge Ball. At the end of the project, we managed to carry out 11 different Ballz Game with the support of our members, interactors and also friends. To us, it was a well executed project and the end results proved it all.

Part F: “Tell Us Why…” During the term RY 2010/11, RAC Penang had come up with a one of a kind Professional Development Project known as the Ballz Game. The uniqueness of this project lies in its originality and creativity to try out 11 different sports throughout the entire term. The project may seem simple but the impact of it is huge. As mentioned above, this project focused on promoting the importance of healthy lifestyle through exercise as well as bringing out the potential in every member. As we all know, it is hard to motivate oneself to exercise alone so instead, we got everyone together to sweat it all out. Not everyone who participated in our Ballz Game have actually tried out all 11 sports on their own, many of them were new to the sports which we introduced. It was a great opportunity to learn the sports that they have always wanted to try out but was not able to due to certain hold-backs. The Ballz Game was proven effective when the participants took interest in a particular sport after trying it out. After the 1st Ballz Game itself, Rtr. Alvin Chong decided to take up the sport of Bowling and now he had been spending months training for it. That day was the first day he held the Bowling ball and immediately he fell in love with the sport. It was proven effective again when Rtr. Jimmy and Rtr. Alice who tried out Ballz Game #5, Golf for the first time, found interest in the sport. Since then, they had been going to the driving range themselves to learn more about the game of golf. As part of the Standard Rotaract Club Constitution, Article II, it is stated that “The purpose of Rotaract is to provide an opportunity for young men and women to enhance the knowledge and skills that will assist them in personal development”. This project has certainly achieved that purpose by providing the opportunity for everyone to learn and to pick up a new skill. Besides sports skills, we do have friendly competition in every Ballz Game to encourage the spirit of sportsmanship as well as to train up the leadership skill in everyone. Besides getting our own member to commit to the club’s activity, we also managed to bring in our own friends as well as Interactors from various schools to join us. Not only did they enjoyed the process of learning all the new skills, at the same time they experienced the fun and fellowship through the Rotaract ways. This is important towards the growth of Rotaract in a whole because when friends and Interactors enjoy the process of learning new skills and personal development, they will eventually join Rotaract in order to pick up more skills. Initially, Rtr. Lee Yee Kah only participates in our Ballz Game but as we progressed, eventually he decided to join the Club. Till date, we have a total of 22 members which is an increase of 214% from the initial number of 7 members. The Ballz Game had actually contributed much to the increase of the club’s membership and we foresee that there will be more potential members who participated in the Ballz Game to join the Rotaract Club of Penang namely Michael Soo, Daryl Lee, Daniel Lim, Atles Foo, Shaun Lim, Lim Yi Mei.

Finally, we are truly satisfied to be able to execute a year-long project that is related to the Rotary Theme this year, which is “Building Communities – Bridging Continents”. As the end result, we managed to build a community of young men and women who care not only about developing the leadership skills in themselves but at the same time, a healthy lifestyle and the importance of exercise.
