Rotary Four Way Test

"Of the things we think, say or do: 1. Is it the Truth? 2. Is it Fair to all concerned? 3. Will it build goodwill and better friendships? 4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?"

➢ Ian Phelan – 40 years Rotary service ➢ John Barnes – 40 years Rotary service.

Unfortunately, both John Goldspink & Ian Phelan were not present, but John Barnes was and is seen pictured with Shia Smart.

Shia then thanked all the members in our club who are performing jobs in the District this year. They are Bronwen Lamond, John Barnes, Michael Ellinger, Felicity Smith, Danny Petrie and Jackie Gleeson. Shia then spoke about the Rotary theme for this year, “Rotary Connects the World”. Shia explained that membership is a high priority for the District with three specific goals:

➢ Get new members ➢ Retain existing members ➢ Start new clubs

Shia then went on to explain that it is important to support the wider family of Rotary and, in this respect, developing interest in Rotary from a young age is important and so we are encouraging activities and programs such as Earlyact, Interact and Rotaract. Our club has covered two out of three of these programs as we have the John Monash Science School Interact Club and also part of the cluster group for Monash Rotaract. Shia said that Rotary needs to be advertised and promoted to the public at every opportunity using the correct Rotary “branding”, where Shia then presented the club with our own new banner with the wording, “Join People like you and me, Exchange Ideas and take Action” (pictured).

The Object of

Rotary 1. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service; 2. High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society; 3. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life; 4. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

Shia then spoke about the District Partner program “Books for Kids” in which 30 schools in District 9180 have been identified in need of assistance for young students to be supplied with appropriate books to improve their reading skills. The cost of providing books averages $20 per child. President David Park presented a cheque to Shia for $750 to go towards “Books for Kids”.

Club Vision OCH Rotary is an energetic, fun-loving, forward-thinking Rotary Club that wishes to continue to grow strategically and provide all its members with opportunities to serve while undertaking worthwhile and sustainable projects locally, nationally and globally.

In closing Shia reminded us to have fun and enjoy being a Rotarian. Also, on the night Anne Mooney was presented with a Paul Harris Fellowship (PHF) by Cess Hodges and Shia Smart. During the presentation by Cess, he explained how Anne first contacted Huntingdale Rotary in 2013 obtain copies of the “Health Record Booklets” they were making available which enabled the user to keep important health records accessible in the event of urgent medical or ambulance attendance. Anne explained that she wanted them for her Parkinson’s support group. They were so impressed with Anne they asked her to join the club and she did in 2014. Anne was instrumental in driving the Rotary Clubs of Clayton & Huntingdale to hold a significant function at Huntingdale Golf Club on 17th July 2015 to draw attention to Atypical Parkinson's and help raise $60,000 towards a Research Fellowship to investigate the three Atypical Parkinson’s diseases. This event subsequently led to our Annual Charity Garden Auction Night which has raised over $50,000 towards supporting those with rare conditions of Parkinson’s. She has served as a Board member for several years & was President in 2018-19 and is now the Vice President of our merged Club. Anne won the Sir Zelman Cowen Award for Parkinson’s Victoria in 2015, which recognises outstanding voluntary services to the Parkinson’s Community. Anne is also active in other parts of the community at local school and kindergarten groups providing support and assistance to young children. At her grandchildren’s primary school, she is tasked with being a “nana” to the children who are suffering hard ships or where English is a second language. Anne continues this work even though they haven’t attended the school for over 4 years. One day a week Anne also volunteers at a Malvern Special Needs child care where she looks after young children with disabilities, offering their parents some respite.

Foundation Facts

THE ROTARY FOUNDATION WEEKLY MESSAGES (By Rotarians for Rotarians) YOU CAN YOU BE PART OF THE GRANTS CADRE OF TECHNICAL ADVISORS Supporting Humanitarian Grants Program, Global Grants Cadre of Technical Advisors is a registry of Rotarians who provide technical expertise to The Rotary Foundation and Rotarians who develop and implement large scale projects. Cadre members serve in countries other than their own, and they conduct on-site project visits for two to three days with written reports upon their return. The Rotary Foundation pays for a per diem and roundtrip air-fare. The cadre is in need of Rotarians qualified in the following fields: Health, Education/Literacy, Small Business/Revolving Loans (micro credit), and Financial Auditing (chartered accountants and certified public accountants), and more. Additionally, it is really helpful for those that can speak French, Spanish, Portuguese and other language skills.

Signature Project 2020 Dear Members, As the President has previously announced, with the consolidation of accumulated funds from the merged clubs, the Board has agreed in principle that we should embark on a major Signature Project in 2020. For this purpose, we propose allocating around $25,000 - $30,000. The intention is that this project should go beyond supporting on an ongoing basis, all of the traditional activities of the merged clubs. As yet no formal criteria for the project has been established, but the intention is that it should have a major impact in our community and also lift our profile as a modern and vibrant Rotary Club, within the cities of Monash and Kingston. The first step is to brainstorm member input on detailed objectives and Project ideas.

Joke of the Week A wealthy Arab Sheik was admitted to hospital for heart surgery, but prior to the surgery, the doctors needed to store his type of blood in case the need arose. As the gentleman had a rare type of blood, it couldn't be found locally, so, the call went out. Finally, a Scotsman was located who had a similar blood type. The Scot willingly donated his blood for the Arab. After the surgery, the Arab sent the Scotsman in appreciation for giving his blood, a new BMW, 5 carats of diamonds, and $50,000 dollars. A couple of days later, once again, the Arab had to go through a corrective surgery. The hospital telephoned the Scotsman who was more than happy to donate more of his blood again. After the second surgery, the Arab sent the Scotsman a thank-you card and a box of Black Magic chocolates. The Scotsman was shocked that the Arab did not reciprocate his kind gesture as he had before. He phoned the Arab and asked him: "I thought you would be generous again, that you would give me another BMW, diamonds and money ... but you only gave me a thank-you card and a box of chocolates." To this the Arab replied: "Aye laddie, but I have Scottish blood in ma veins now."

Rotary International News

Jessie Harman First Female RI Director in Zone 8 From Rotary Downunder

Dr Jessie Harman, a member of the Rotary Club of Wendouree Breakfast, Vic, has been chosen as a Rotary International director for 2021-23. The announcement was made by RI general secretary John Hewko on October 9, following a meeting of the Zone 8 Nominating Committee in Christchurch, NZ. The election is subject to challenge, and John advised that RI president Mark Maloney will declare Jessie as director-nominee for the Zone on December 1, 2019 – unless another qualified Rotarian has been duly proposed as a challenging candidate before that date. Jessie will succeed Rafael Garcia from the Philippines as Zone 8 representative on the RI board of directors. Raffy followed Australia’s last director, Noel Trevaskis, at the beginning of the 2018-19 Rotary year. Jessie has already achieved a distinguished service record in Rotary, and her election is a significant landmark for Rotary in this zone. Jessie is past club secretary and president, and was governor of District 9780 in 2010-11. More recently, at zone level, she has served as Rotary coordinator; project lead for the Regional Membership Plan for Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands; and governor elect training coordinator for Australia.
