Rotary Four Way Test

"Of the things we think, say or do: 1. Is it the Truth? 2. Is it Fair to all concerned? 3. Will it build goodwill and better friendships? 4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?"

However, if for any reason you do not intending to continue your membership, it is important to advise either the Secretary and or the Treasurer, well before 30 June, so that our advice to RI is accurate and the Club does not attract unnecessary cost. Further the Rotary Down Under magazine will be emailed to members this coming year. This is a “cost cutting” measure of RDU. Please advise the Secretary or Treasurer if you want RDU magazine to be mailed -this can be arranged. Best wishes David Whiting Secretary WORKING WITH CHILDREN CHECKS For the new Rotary Year would all members please advise John Jarvis of the current serial number and expiry date of their “Working With Children” check on [email protected] Thank You. The Object of

Rotary 1. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service; 2. High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society; 3. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life; 4. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

Last Meeting & Notes Last Meeting (10th June): Apologies = Peter Webb, John Goldspink, Jim Cochrane & Jean Cochrane. Make Ups = None. Leave of Absence = Wayne Milner and Felicity Smith. Visitors = None. This week our guest speakers were DGE Alma Reynolds and Greg King through a video presentation. The video included Almas year ahead and the introduction of the incoming District Board, the introduction of the 2020/2021 Rotary Theme “Rotary Opens Opportunities” by RI President Elect Holger Knaack and Greg King announcing the DG’s partners project which will be supporting the eradication of Polio. A copy of the video presentation made by Alma can be found here We also heard two excellent “Behind the Badge” talks from both Bronwen Lamond and Doug Bowden. Bronwen went first and explained how she joined the by someone asking her in the old Clayton Rotary club and how she is also part of the “Uncle Bobs Club” where she was also a Vice-President for a number of years. Bronwen has also been an Assistant Governor in Rotary for the last three years. Has now also become a member of the Rotary Youth Exchange and the RLI leadership team. Bronwen’s career has been in education. Bronwen would like to organise a volunteer tutoring service for students with ex-school principals. Bronwen then told us about her interest where she was yachty for a number of years and loves the Sydney to Hobart yacht races. Her scariest experience was going overboard during one of her sailing experiences. Next was Doug Bowden who informed us that he joined Rotary in October 1997 and has been a member for 23 years. Doug’s presentation gave us a great history of his life from when he was born in Ardrossan on the Yorke Peninsula in South Australia to the present. While playing football at a young age Doug learned his first two valuable lessons in life. First was when you see a keg being rolled on to the team bus do not try and keep up with the senior members of the team and the second lesson was that there is no such thing as friendly in football. Doug was also in the army as an adult tradesman and studied communications and electronics. All up Doug spent 21 years in the army, which included seven different postings and 10 different addresses. Doug finally left the Army in 1990 as a Warrant Officer Class One. Doug also said that he had a starring role in an 1970’s Army Recruiting Video called the “The Green Machine” (follow the link to see if you can find him). Doug then spoke about his working career after the army from starting work at Rockwell Collins as a Quality Engineer to his current workplace which is Sepura in Notting Hill where is has been for 12 years. In the 23 years since being in Rotary, Doug has been Board member and also had roles as Program, Secretary, Fundraising, On to Conference and President of Huntingdale Rotary four times. During his Fundraising period, Doug supported the club with helping and organising of the carparking at the Masters, Presidents Cup and World Cup of Golf.

PRIP Sir Clem Renouf It is with much sadness that I report to you that PRIP Clem passed on Thursday 11th June. Sir Clem was a giant in Rotary history as the instigator of the 3-H program that led to the polio eradication effort. We know him as the person who started the goal of Polio Eradication. To the members of Rotary Club of Nambour he was a fellow Rotarian of larger than life. He was their Club’s Charter Secretary. A founding member of the Club, Clem became District Governor in 1965-66, and went on to serve as President of Rotary International in 1978-79. Kind Regards Shia

Joke of the Week How to get to Heaven from Ireland. A true Story from an Irish Sunday School Teacher. I was testing children in my Dublin Sunday school class to see if they understood the concept of getting to heaven. 'I asked them, ' If I sold my house and my car, had a big garage sale and gave all my money to the church, would that get me into heaven?' 'NO!' the children answered. 'If I cleaned the church every day, mowed the garden, and kept everything tidy, would that get me into heaven?' Again, the answer was 'NO!' 'If I gave sweets to all the children, and loved my husband, would that get me into heaven?' Again, they all answered 'NO!' I was just bursting with pride for them. I continued, 'Then how can I get into heaven?' A little boy shouted out: 'YUV GOTTA BE DEAD. ‘!!’

The Timor-Leste Food Lab By RDU Editorial

Founded by Australian Rotary Peace Fellow Mark Notaras and wife Alva Lim, the Timor-Leste Food Lab is shaping the future of food and agriculture in the Asia-Pacific by embracing the region’s profound food diversity and bio-cultural history. The Dili-based social enterprise has trained and mentored teams of young Timorese hospitality and tourism champions, who are innovating with their own heritage foods and unique coffees. “We are passionate about good, clean and fair food for all,” Mark said. “We currently mentor 16 Timorese youth. We ask them to think differently; to be guided by the equatorial seasons and the knowledge of their ancestors. To become plant-forward champions who celebrate the seasonality of flavours. To advocate for native and heritage ingredients.”

Through its flagship restaurant Agora Food Studio, the Food Lab is having a significant impact on the Timorese economy and environment. Since 2016, more than 37,000 nourishing meals have been served, approximately $115,000 has been invested in the Timorese agricultural economy, 1159 litres of Timorese virgin coconut oil and 24,375kg of organic compost has been used, while 22,123 plastic bottles and 11,534 plastic straws have been avoided. Most recently, the restaurant’s chefs assisted the World Food Programme (WFP) to promote healthy, local foods for Timorese adolescents through its ‘Our Food is Our Identity’ campaign. “In achieving this social good we have drawn strength from our partnership with Rotary,” Mark said. “I was privileged to be selected as a Rotary Peacebuilding Fellow to study at Chulalongkorn University in Thailand in 2013. This professional training helped link my background in peacebuilding with my appreciation of delicious and nutritious food. “The skills and interests I developed inspired my wife and I to embark on the ambitious venture of unveiling the country’s gastronomic stories. Mediation skills and the art of working collaboratively in crosscultural contexts have since been the backbone of our young team’s success and collective growth.” With the Food Lab team now established hospitality professionals and the Agora Food Studio firmly on Dili’s culinary map, Rotary has further supported skills development. “Our young coffee-grower-cumbarista champion (fifth in the 2018 Timor-Leste competition), Cesaltina ‘Alu’ Tilman, was sponsored through the Rotary New Generations Vocational Training Selection in 2019,” Mark said. “Alu attended a professional placement at the Cairns Sheridan Hotel, Qld, where she learned skills in guest reception and housekeeping. She surprised her Cairn’s colleagues when they discovered her professional barista skills – after which they asked her to teach them how to make a super coffee!” With her English (or should we say ‘Australian’) significantly improved, Alu was promoted to General Manager of Agora Food Studio and is currently responsible for 15 staff. “We owe a debt of gratitude to the Rotary community, especially the Rotary Club of Dili, for supporting both of our placements,” Mark said. The Timor-Leste Food Lab is seeking further exchanges with Rotary partners in Australia as soon as the COVID-19 situation allows. For more information, email [email protected].
