Welcome Message from District Governor – Malcolm Boddington

Both Mike Cannon and I are delighted that our visiting GSE team this year come from District 5040 Vancouver, Canada. When thinking about and subsequently deciding on an exchange with Canada I felt that it had been a while since we had exchanged with folks in that part of the world. Valerie and I have already formed a close friendship with DG Bob Blacker and his wife Judy, something we both treasure, having visited them in Vancouver and also met with them at the international events that District Governors attend as part of their training.

We have done our very best, with tremendous help and support from Clubs in District1090, to arrange an enjoyable and balanced programme of home-stays, and visits, both for interest and vocational studies.

Personally, I look forward to welcoming Rotarian Don Kavanagh, the Team Leader, Sladjana Dobric, Nick Lauga, Jenny Lomas and Rick Smith from District 5040 at our District Conference in Torquay.

I am certain that they will all get a truly warm 1090 welcome.

Rotary District 1090 An Overview

District 1090 stretches from Banbury in the North, to the edge of London in the South East, much of it being situated in the Thames Valley. It consists of 61 Clubs in the counties of Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Middlesex. The Chiltern Hills separate the more urban east from the rural west, but throughout there is scenic beauty, stately homes and picturesque towns, together with famous universities. These contrast with a mix of traditional and hi-tech industries mainly grouped in industrial estates on the edge of towns. The district has a fine network of roads, with the M40 motorway cutting through the heart of the District to

link London with Birmingham. The M4 motorway passes through the south of the District, connecting London with South Wales. London’s Heathrow Airport is also within the district, which gives us ready access to the rest of the world. Banbury is a market town in the South Midlands. Chipping Norton is the gateway to the tourist area of the Cotswold Hills and Woodstock has Blenheim Palace, home of the Duke of Marlborough and birthplace of Winston Churchill. Oxford University is world-renowned for education and is the first of the major towns and cities beside the River Thames, which continues downstream through Henley, famous for its annual regatta, Marlow, Maidenhead and Windsor with its Royal Castle. South of the river are the historic towns of Wantage and Newbury nestled in the downs and renowned for their bloodstock stables. Ascot is also noted for its horse racing connections. High Wycombe is the centre of the furniture manufacturing trade. Reading is the heart of the British version of Silicon Valley with an accent on computer manufacturing and software development. It is the location of Microsoft's UK headquarters. Scientific research majors around the Didcot and Abingdon region, whilst the district is also home to several world famous Formula one racing teams, notably Williams, Renault and Super Aguri with McLaren, Red Bull and Force India just beyond the borders.
