NEW
GENERATIONS
MONTH - Celebrating all the ways Rotary
develops young leaders
As you may recall, last year,
under Past-President Andy Bednar, The
The Rotary Club of Warren had a
year full of celebrations
commemorating our Centennial. During the month of September,
we will once again celebrate with
Andy as he hosts Fellowship!
This past week, September
3rd marked National Skyscraper
Day in honor of all the architects,
engineers, and construction
workers who design and build the
world’s tallest structures. One
European real estate data company defines a skyscraper as at least 330 feet,
while in the United States, a building starts to qualify as a skyscraper at
around 500 feet. The world’s first skyscraper was the Home Insurance
Building in Chicago, designed by William Le Baron Jenney and erected in
1884/1885. This building, also called the Monadnock Block, is known as the
“Father of the Skyscraper” and towered at all of 10 stories with its peak at
138 feet. It was considered gargantuan at the time.
Currently, the tallest buildings are found in the following locations:
Dubai, United Arab Emirates: 163 floors/2,717’
Shanghai, China: 128 floors/2,073’
Mecca, Saudi Arabia: 120 floors/1,971’
Shenzhen, China: 115 floors/1,965’
Seoul, South Korea: 123 floors/1,819’
NY, NY, USA One World Trade Center: 104 floors/1,776’
In a list of Future Tallest Buildings, a structure currently under
construction in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia would take the top spot at 167
floors/3,307’. That list would move One World Trade Center into at least
the 28th tallest spot, behind, among others, a building called Big Bend slated
for construction in New York City, making IT the tallest building in the
U.S.A.
In closing, Andy shared a few additional thoughts:
“Marble is a valuable building material, and it should not be taken for granite.

THE ROTARY CLUB OF WARREN WELCOMES
DISTRICT GOVERNOR SCOTT SCHULICK
District Governor Scott R. Schulick earned a Bachelor of Science
in Business Administration in 1994 and a Master of Business
Administration in 1996 from Youngstown State University. He began
his career as a financial advisor with Butler Wick and Company, which
was later was later acquired by Stifel Nicolaus. He is currently Vice-President
of Investments for Stifel, Nicolaus, and Co., Inc.
Scott has been active in numerous civic organizations in the
Mahoning Valley. He served two terms as President of the Rotary
Club of Youngstown, from 2003-2004 and again from 2013-2014, and
is a multiple Paul Harris Fellow. He has 20 years of perfect
attendance. Past activities also include serving as Chairperson of the
Investment Committee of the Community Foundation of the Mahoning
Valley and being a graduate of Leadership Mahoning Valley. In 2004,
Governor Taft appointed Scott as a member of YSU’s Board of
Trustees, where he served as Chair from 2008-2011.
During his visit to the Rotary Club of Warren on September 5th,
DG Schulick indicated that he joined Rotary in 1995 at the age of 23,
making him a member for half of his life. He stated that it was the
best decision he has ever made. He never aspired to be a District
Governor but has found the leadership role to be very fulfilling. He
admitted that t admitted that the best part has been visiting the different clubs.

He acknowledged that our Club is vibrant, with a long history of serving our
community, and that people of action, like our members, will be the
inspiration this year. We have the important job of motivating and
empowering others to serve.
The special thing about Rotary is that, together, people can unite and
take action across the globe, but we must first be the inspiration
within our own clubs. DG Schulick reported that over the past two years,
Rotary has had a stagnant 1.2 million members. Yet, one in nine have
terminated within their first year and many more are leaving! Rotary can
be attractive to business leaders because it is a place to network and serve
others. However, many members leave because of time constraints.
Thus, Rotary is at a crossroads. We need to rethink and reset our
Clubs in order to meet the needs of 2018. Scott indicated that successful
Rotary Clubs are like successful restaurants. We have to change the menu
of service for members and encourage them to stay for all of the courses.
Furthermore, we have to show members that their work is relevant. A few
of his suggestions were to: designate a “person of good character” as a
classification; meet two times per month instead of weekly; eliminate
attendance requirements; use technology to have live streaming meetings;
continue to raise awareness about why we strive to eradicate polio; have
service meetings, not just weekly business meetings; and reach out
to those who aren’t here today and encourage them to get back into the
fold and see how it will change their lives. The bottom line: if it’s not
broken, then break it! Be innovative and be the inspiration!
DG Schulick thanked all in attendance for putting their confidence in
him to lead District 6650 and for being members of Rotary!
Best wishes to the following Warren Rotarians who are celebrating September Birthdays:
