Italy is a big boot shapedpeninsula in the middle ofEurope, rounded by theMediterranean Sea.

It is subdivided into 20regions with 109 provinces.

The capital is Rome, whichis the largest city and thecore of Roman CatholicChurch.

I live in the north of Italy, in the region Lombardia, Lecco province.It is one of the most extended, developed and populated.

My school

Italy has not always been united asit is today; it was divided in smallkingdoms which fought one with theother with several wars.On March 17, 1861 VittorioEmanuele II proclamed the birth ofItalian Kingdom (Regno d’Italia) andhimself as its king.

On June 2nd, 1946 in a popular referendumItalian people decided to turn Italy from aMonarchy into a Republic. A day after thisreferendum the king of Italy Umberto II diSavoia was exiled. Women voted for the firsttime.The Constitution was approved by theConstituent Assembly on December the 22°of the following year.

A little bit of history

The president of the Italian Republic is elected for seven years andhe represents the national unity. At the moment he is Sergio

Mattarella.

What about now

The 1948 Constitution of Italy established a bicameralparliament, consisting of a House of Commons and aSenate, a separate judiciary, and an executive branchcomposed of a council of Ministers , headed by the

Prime Minister. He is Matteo Renzi.
