Finding virtual holiday deals: online shopping presents real risks!"#$%&'()$*+$%#+&,-.
The Nov. 19 edition of The Round Up featured an article with tips for shoppers as they hit the malls this holiday season. The following tips are courtesy the CA Internet security team to help students who shop online during the holiday season avoid some headaches. Here are six tips for not getting scammed when doing online shopping:
1. Do not follow the links sent to you via email for great holiday deals. You can get to the same information by going directly to the seller’s Web site, which will prevent phishing attacks. 2. Don’t believe any email that comes to you saying you need to log into your account (via the included link) and reset your password. If you believe your account may have any problems, go directly to the vendor’s Web site and see if there are any issues posted OR call the bank directly.3. Pay as many of your purchases, including gift cards/!"#$%&'!($")*'$+,)*'!-+$.%/0*'"$!1*'()' ,+2' !(/' $.#+20.' (' 3"#%&'"4'online payment system, such as PayPal or Google Checkout, which insure your purchases. If Paypal is not an option, use one credit card and make sure that the issuing bank has a policy to protect you if there are any fraudulent purchases against your card.4. If an online ad seems too good to be true, it usually is. Don’t click on it. Malvertisements, or malicious ads, are on the rise. 5. Use a multilayered approach to securing your personal computer. Install an up
todate internet security suite from an established brand. and be aware some legitimatesounding freeware products can actually be malware in disguise. Ensure the suite includes antivirus, antispyware, anti5.%).%/0*' (/$%6)5(7' (/4' &'#"6wall. You can stay on top of the latest threats and scams by signing up for advisories from a credible source, such as the National Cyber Security Alliance or CA’s Security Advisor at www.ca.com/securityadvisor.6. To make sure your PC is operating at its peak performance, perform regular maintenance to ensure that drivers are updated, defragged, etc.

As the fall semester concludes, students are packing up and heading home, not to step foot in Las Cruces again until mid January. The end of the academic calendar does not bring an end to all events at New Mexico State University, however. The men’s and women’s basketball teams have only just begun their seasons, and each year the teams and the athletics department must change gears to keep attendance levels even during the winter break. “Attendance usually drops when winter break occurs,” said women’s head basketball coach Darin Spence. The fan base provides an advantage for the home team, but a lack of fans partially takes that advantage away, Spence said. “The atmosphere of the stadium usually drops,” Spence said. “We lose the student body and we don’t have the band. We basically lose our home court advantage.” Winter Break is generally inconvenient for NMSU athletics, but Spence said he felt optimistic about the attendance numbers up to winter break. “I’m encouraged by the numbers,” Spence said. “Each year the numbers continue to grow.” The basketball teams have reached the heart of nonconference play and will have al
ready begun conference play by the end of winter break. By the time classes begin on Jan. 14, the men will have already played home games against Utah State and Nevada, and the women will have already played against Hawaii and Fresno State. The Athletics Department must change marketing and advertising strategies for the games over winter break. With a vast majority of the student population away from school, the Athletics Department must put its focus in a different community population. “We put more focus on families over winter break,” John Houser said. Houser has worked extensively with marketing for the NMSU Athletics Department. The Athletics Department will promote various familyoriented events during the games to make up for the lack of students, Houser said. On Dec, 28, when the Aggies will face Prairie View A&M, various hotels will be holding discounts for families. Santa Clause will attend the game on Dec. 23 against Texas Southern, and fans are encouraged to dress like Pistol Pete for the
game against Utah State on Jan. 2, Houser said. Spence had a few ideas of his own. Spence said a toy drive, in which anyone who donated a toy for the holidays would get in for free would get fans in the stands. Spence also suggested a doubleheader, during which the men and women would play on the same night. Although most students will be out of town, the stadium will not be empty of all students. “I am definitely going to the games during the break,” sophomore Marcos Guzman said. “Conference games will start over break, and I’m really excited for that.” Spence said he believes the end of the academic semester does not mean students should stop supporting Aggie athletics. “I want the students to come out to watch us play exciting basketball and watch us compete,” Spence said. “I want the students to make the players feel like true Aggies.”

The New Mexico State University men’s basketball team has had a rough season so far. The 35 Aggies have struggled to put all the pieces together on the court. Forwards Wendell McKines and Troy Gillenwater are currently unable to compete due to academic ineligibility. The absence of the tandem has left
low post duties to center Hamidu Rahman. Rahman is currently averaging about 13 points and nine rebounds per game per. “[Rahman] has been doing good,” Menzies said. “He’s getting lots of minutes and playing solid. I think if he learns from his mistakes in the UNM game, he’ll be solid.” Menzies said key factors in Aggie losses have been turnovers. The Aggies have turned over the ball 119 times, while opponents have turned the ball over to NMSU 96 times. Transition defense has also been a problem for NMSU. “Once we get in a half court set, we do pretty good,” Menzies said. “We’re doing more wrong than right. But the team has great chemistry, which is a necessary intangible.” Among other things, the Aggies have had the advantage when rebounding. The Aggies currently
have 24 deadball rebounds and opponents have 17 deadball rebounds. Despite the losses, Menzies remains optimistic about the remainder of the season.
“If you look at the whole conference in the nonconference standings, people have losses,” Menzies said. “The whole conference is down. [Finishing high in the conference] is very realistic.”

Forward Robert Lumpkins has struggled putting points on the board, averaging 4.1 points per game, but has added 29 rebounds. The current losses and oncourt struggles may affect Aggie attendance during the break, when students do not typically attend games. “It will be tough,” Menzies said. “Winning is certainly a part of [drawing in the crowd]. “Hopefully true fans will come and support the Aggies.” Menzies said the timetaable for Gillenwater’s and McKines’s return will be evaluated at the end of the week. The Aggies will be back in action against UTEP on Sunday in El Paso. Tip off is set for 7 p.m.

Students looking to buy unique holiday gifts that are not available in mass quantities should take their wallets to SumArt Festival this weekend. The festival will feature over 30 local and regional artists. About 20 to 23 booths full of handmade artwork will be available for sale and on exhibit. “Students who attend will get to see some of the best artwork by their peers,” said Chris Bardey, a festival organizer. “It’s a great way to relieve end of the semester stress and let loose.” The festival aims to introduce art to middle and high school students, Bardey said. “We want to bring in students and show them all of the outlets they can be involved with,” Bardey said. “We focus on do it yourself fun rather than relying on technology.” Bardey’s abstract works, which focus on health issues, will also be on display. The festival will feature a number of events for attendees. An open microphone will take place from 4 to 6 on Saturday and Sunday. A cage battle will take place, during which two or four participants battle with art, and participating artists must respond to yelledout cues with an image. New Mexico State University painting professor, Craig Cully will battle at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
“Anyone who wants to support the arts community or is interested in art should go,” Torres said. “There will be a lot of events. They’ll have a good time.” Student artist Mario Torres,

Although the holidays will shut down the New Mexico State University campus for a few weeks, there are still plenty of things to be seen and heard in Las Cruces over the winter break. Coming to the Rio Grande Theatre during the break are two exciting and very different performers. On Dec. 19, Johnny Rawls, a soul and blues singer will perform at the theater at 8 p.m. Rawls began singing in the 1970s, but signed with a new record company at the beginning of 2000. Since then,
Rawls has produced three albums, including “Red Cadillac,” which reached No. 1 on the blues charts in 2008. Rawls is expected to be nominated as 2009 blues artist of the year said Rio Grande Theatre Manager David Salcido. “He started out playing with the legends,” Salcido said. “But now he’s got a very contemporary feel. A lot of younger people are discovering him and making him their own.” A second performance, which will take place on Dec. 27 at the Rio Grande Theatre, is Bite of the Apple Cabaret. The group is composed of NMSU alumni who perform at
the theatre annually. “This year they all moved to New York,” Salcido said. “They’re checking back in and sharing their experiences through song and dance.” Bite of the Apple Cabaret will perform a variety show with show tunes as well as some original songs. Admission is $15 for adults and $12 for students. For more information on these performances ,visit www.riograndetheatre.com.
