OCTOBER 2016 I recently saw a moving story of a woman who thought she had grand singing talent. I’m not endorsing or critiquing this excellent movie, but it stirred quite a few personal strings in me. You see, I always wanted to be a great singer (and/or dancer, as a matter of fact), but alas, it was not to be. Aspirations aside, I simply do not have those necessary talents. I was sent to the last row of chorus and told to simply mouth the words and smile. us I looked at my talented neighbors who possess many diverse skills with great envy. Did you know that Gloria Albert is an accomplished painter? Or that Lori Rosenthal played the bass fiddle at Carnegie Hall (I’m sure through much practice, practice, and practice). Although now relegated to the shower, Diane Staudacher once sang on e Merry Mailman. And of course our Big Band singer, Marge Laudenback cannot be overlooked. So all this talent got me thinking (never a good sign, according to some). I’m sure many of us had dreams of doing or being something other than what we see. Tom Risotto always wanted to sell ice cream on the beach. He dreamed of driving that big white truck, ringing the bell and serving smiling kids all day long. OCTOBER 2016

I recently saw a moving story of a woman who thought she had grand singing talent. Thus I looked at my talented neighbors who possess many diverse skills with great envy. Did you know that Gloria Albert is an accomplished painter? Or that Lori Rosenthal played the bass fiddle at Carnegie Hall (I’m sure through much practice, practice, and practice). Although now relegated to the shower, Diane Staudacher once sang on The Merry Mailman.

Not that he finds dentistry “boring” but he thought it would be great to do his thing and go home.

Debbie Nyman wanted to be tennis pro, But reaching only 4’!0”, she didn’t stand a chance. Besides, according to Debbie, she wasn’t that great a player anyway! So she became a computer programmer instead. But please don’t ask her how well she does at that.

Gabe Neiser wanted to become a great dancer. He thought that by taking lessons and learning how to ballroom dance and tango he mighty have been a contender on some famous talent show. But it never happened and never will, according to his girlfriend, Vee.When she was younger, Fran Laona took acting lessons with some of her friends. She did it for fun, but she has not lost her comedic touch and timing and loves dressing for a part. Can Halloween be far behind?

Speaking of Halloween, please join your friends and neighbors at our annual Halloween Party. A flyer will be posted soon. Don’t miss out on a fun-filled evening. We had a great time at the Labor Day Pot Luck dinner with many creative chefs showing off hot and spicy and mellow and tasty culinary skills. The big 50/50 winners were Charlie Miceli, Carol Korzybski, and Mary Zach. The party could not have been as successful as it was without the never ending help of so many. Thanks Barbara Santangelo, Mary Ann Miceli, the might furniture movers, Mary and Ken Zach, and of course the hard working party committee.

On September 11th, a Memorial Service was held. Organized by Norma Ferrara to honor those lost on that terrible day, we paid tribute to the fallen through song, poems, and silent reflection. Anthony Sivillo led us in the Pledge and God Bless America.

Have a warm and wonderful fall. Be healthy. Be Happy. Get involved.

Bring Our Experience Home

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENTHello everyone,

October brings out a special beauty, from the sights of multi-colored foliage and ripened pumpkins and gourds, to the tastes and aromas of special fall foods, to the sounds of crunching leaves and fires crackling. There are lingering reminders of the season just past, as well as hints of the season that will soon be here. We are so lucky to live in an area where we can enjoy the change of seasons, with all its imagery and sensations.

Around The Ranches, you can see evidence of the changes taking place as we prepare for the coming holidays and yes, the coming weather, too. We have been working hard on plans for the necessary road repairs within the community. We will update you as soon as plans are finalized. Additionally, there are two important points for you to note:

1. Architectural projects: Please remember that you must submit a request for Board Approval for any architectural changes you would like to make to your unit. These changes include decks and fences. There are special conditions and regulations regarding such changes, and we have an Architectural Committee whose function it is to help you through the application process. This includes submitting detailed plans for your project, completing specific forms (including Hold Harmless Agreements), and, in some cases, obtaining Town Permits. No project may begin without HOA Board approval. After you submit your application to the committee, they will consider it for approval and the forward it to the Board with its recommendation for appropriate Board action. You will then receive a written decision from the Board. Again, NO PROJECT may begin without this approval. Please contact the committee with any questions.

2. Annual meeting: In case you’re waiting for notice of a FALL annual meeting, please be aware that, due to the excellent attendance at our meeting held in the SPRING, the Board has voted to hold our Annual Meeting in the Spring each year. This way, the greatest number of our residents are actually here at The Ranches (back from any winter residences or vacations) and we can have more productive meetings. Annual elections will be held at that time as well.

As always, we welcome your interest, comments, and questions .Best wishes for a Fabulous Fall!

Phyllis Sterne

NEIGHBOR TO NEIGHBORChairs have legs, but do they walk? No, this is not a riddle but a question as to the location of numerous missing folding chairs from the clubhouse. If you have borrowed them, please return them to their permanent home in the great room closet.

Many thanks to Norma Ferrara, Jean Sivillo, and Angie Kelson for forming a Welcome Committee for our many new neighbors. Please see the address/phone list in the newsletter for our newest residents. They’ll be added to our phone directory at the beginning of the new year.

Sunday bagels would not be as well served without the diligent help of Lillian Romano, Barbara Santangelo, Lenny and Sandy Atlman, and Sal Laona. Thank you.

JACK-O-LANTERNSOriginated in Ireland with turnips instead of pumpkins, are based on a legend about a man name Stingy Jack who repeatedly trapped the Devil and only let him go on the condition that Jack would never go to Hell. However, when he died, Jack learned that Heaven didn’t really want his soul either after all his devilish dealings, so he was condemned to wander the earth as a ghost for all eternity. His old friend, the Devil, gifted Jack a lump of burning coal, which Jack carried around in a carved-out turnip to light his way. Locals began carving frightening faces into their own gourds to scare off evil spirits such as Jack of the Lantern.

GHOSTSCeltic people believed that during the festival Samhain, which marked the transition to the New Year at the end of the harvest and beginning of the winter, spirits walked the Earth. Later, the introduction of All Souls Day on November 2 by Christian missionaries perpetuated the idea of a mingling between the living and the dead around that time.

COSTUMESWith all these ghosts wandering around the Earth during Samhain, the Celts had to get creative to avoid being terrorized by evil spirits. To fake out the ghosts, people would don disguises so they would be mistaken for spirits themselves and left alone.

BLACK CATSThe association of black cats and spookiness actually dates all the way back to the Middle Ages, when these dark kitties were considered a symbol of the Devil. It didn’t help the felines’ reputations when, centuries later, accused witches were often found to have cats, especially black ones, as companions.

BLACK AND ORANGEThe classic Halloween colors can also trace their origins back to the Celtic festival Samhain. Black represented the “death” of summer while orange is emblematic of the autumn harvest season.
