Biography

Roxanna Panufnik is one of the UK’s most popular and beloved composers whose works have struck a deep emotional chord with audiences everywhere.

Since studying composition at London’s Royal Academy of Music, Panufnik has written a wide range of pieces - opera, ballet, music theatre, choral works, chamber compositions and music for film and television - which have been performed all over the world.

Among her most widely performed works are Westminster Mass, commissioned for Westminster Cathedral Choir on the occasion of Cardinal Hume’s 75th birthday; The Music Programme, an opera for Polish National Opera’s millennium season which received its UK premiere at the BOC Covent Garden Festival; and settings for solo voices and orchestra of Vikram Seth’s Beastly Tales - the first of which was commissioned by the BBC for Patricia Rozario and City of London Sinfonia.

Other recent compositions include Panufnik’s critically acclaimed harp concerto Powers & Dominions; Letters from Burma for oboist Douglas Boyd and the Vellinger String Quartet; Leda, a ballet for English National Ballet and Wratislavia Cantans and Abraham - a violin concerto commissioned by Savannah Music Festival for Daniel Hope, incorporating Christian, Islamic and Jewish music. This last work was converted into an overture, commissioned by the World Orchestra for Peace and premiered in Jerusalem under the baton of Valery Gergiev.

2010/11 included premières with artists such as Tasmin Little & the Orchestra of the Swan; the Chamber Choir of Ireland with Paul Hillier; St John’s College Cambridge; Chanticleer; a new mass setting, Schola Missa de Angelis, for Schola the choir of London Oratory School & brass octet and The Generation of Love, a Shakespeare sonnet cycle with Mark Padmore, Richard Watkins and Julius Drake. Dance of Life, incorporating her fourth mass setting and first performed by the Tallinn Philharmonic Orchestra and multiple Tallinn choirs, was commissioned to mark Tallinn’s tenure as European Capital of Culture in 2011. It was recorded and released on the Warner Classics label in February 2014.

In 2012 Panufnik was named inaugural Associate Composer with the London Mozart Players. Four World Seasons, consisting of Spring In Japan, Indian Summer, Autumn in Albania and Tibetan Winter, was premiered in full by the London Mozart Players and violinist Tasmin Little in March 2012 and broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 to launch their Music Nation Weekend which celebrated the London 2012 Olympic Games. Choral works such as Magnificat & Nunc Dimittis, Love Endureth, The Song of Names and Alma Redemptoris Mater also received their world premières in 2012 in Europe and the USA, with the choirs of Westminster Cathedral, St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, Philadelphia and Portsmouth Cathedral among others.

In 2013 Panufnik’s choral CD Love Abide, featuring recordings of a number of her recent multi-faith choral works, was released on Warner Classics to critical acclaim. Orchestrapaedia, a contemporary young person’s guide to the orchestra, commissioned by the Welsh Sinfonia and Cheltenham Music Festival, premièred at the Dora Stoutzker Hall, Cardiff in April that year.

Two Composers, Four Hands a piece written to straddle the centenaries of Lutosławski and Andrzej Panufnik (in 2013 and 2014 respectively) was commissioned by the Wrocław Chamber Orchestra Leopoldinum with funds from the Institute of Music and Dance (Poland) and marks the start of a series of events and programming commemorating her father’s centenary. The piece was premièred in Wrocław in December 2013 in a performance conducted by Ernst Kovavic.

Panufnik’s compositions are published by Peters Edition Ltd. and have been recorded on labels including EMI and Warner Classics.
