Oaptain Bateman. Oaptain Kennedy has been transferred to this District from the Eastern Oommand. Lieutenant Benson sailed for India on January 9. Lieutenants De la Oour, Jacob and Denyer have joined from Aldershot.

" A large number. of the Oorps were present at St. George's, Hanover Square, on Janua,ry 17, to witness the wedding of Oaptain Harold Simson, R.A.M.O., to Miss Kate L. Olarke, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Olarke, of 3, Ohandos Street, Oavendish Square. At the reception afterwards congratUlations were showered on the happy couple, and they were given a hearty send 'off on their honeymoon, which was spent in Switzerland.

"A very pleasant and successful 'At Home' was given by the members of Q.A.I.M.N.S. on January 3, which brought a large number of the Oorps aud their friends together. The rooms were decorated with lovely flowers, and a small band discoursed music in an adjacent room.

"On Saturday, January 19, a most successful concert was given at the Queen Alexandra Military Hospital, Millbank, for the benefit of the patients. SergeantMajor Smitb, R.A.M.O., organised the entertainment entirely, the performers being his own friends, who kindly gave their services. The programme provided was of an exceptionally talented character, the' singing of the ladies especially, and SergeantMajor Smith himself sang two songs which were highly' appreciated by the large audience of patients.

" On Friday, the 24th, another concert was given by the Misses Harrison, nieces of Brigade.Surgeon.Lieutenant.Oolonel Harrison, Brigade of Guards (Officer Oommanding Millbank Hospital), and several of their lady friends. These ladies are w8ll known at lHillbank, as they astonished the patients last year with the brilliance of their violin playing, and this year they were encored again and again, and there was no shadow of doubt that their performance was most highly appreciated by tbe men. After the concert the visitors amoDg the audience were entertained at tea by Oolonel Harrison in the hoard room, where the large new photograph of H.R.H. the Duke of OODDaught, lately presented to the hospital by Oolonel Sloggett, O.lVLG., P.M.O. London District, was much admired.

"The football team of the 18th Oompany Royal Army Medical Oorps bave so far had a most successful season. In the Harwood Oup they won tbeir way through the 1st and 2nd rounds. The semi-final agaiDst No. 2 Oompany had to be stopped with the score at 2 goals all, owing to the bad light. The game was replayed at Aldershot on January 29 and resulted in a draw (2 goals all).

"Quartermaster and Hon. Oaptain O. Bere, R.A.M.O., retired on February 1,on reaching the age limit. He has served for thirty-six years in the Oorps, the 10Dgest period of service of anyone now serviDg in the Royal Army' Medical Oorps. He was on active service during the whole of the South African War, aDd received the Queen's meds'! with three clasps and the King's medal with two clasps. He leaves with the regrets aDd good wishes of all ranks."

NOTES FROM MALTA.-Major O. Pollock, R.A.M.O., writes (February 4, 1907); " The following extract from the Daily Malta Chmnicle gives an acconnt of aD iDterest· ing event which took place on January 11, viz., the dedication of a tablet to the memory of the late Oolonel Wolseley, R.A.M.O.

Senior Chaplain having received it in the. J:I!l1me,.(>.f .. the Chaplain and Churchwardens of the Barracca Church, then proceeded with the dedicatory prayer and service, a.ll having returned to their seats. After the service His Excellency the Governor inspected the men of the Royal Army Medical Corps on the square outside the Barracca Church. All who knew Colonel Wolsel~y will ever remember him as a man devoted to his duty. His kindly disposition endeared him to many, and he was always ready to help others by work, advice and sympathy whenever he could. He was a worshipper a.t the Barracca Church and it is appropriate that the Tablet should be on a line with the seat he occupied ·so regularly on a Sunday. It will be gratifying to Colonel W olseley's widow to know that the memorial service was so largely attended, both by His Excellency and Lady Mansfield Clarke and his Staff, the Headquarters Staff, including Major General H. Barron, Brigadier-General F. Hall, Colonel Sill, Colonel Winter, Major-Boyce, besides the Chaplains and ChurchwMdens before mentioned. The Royal Army Medical Corps included the Principal Medical Officer, the Colonels, ~,ll other officers and their wives, the nursing sisters, warrant officers, non-commissioned officers and men from every part of the Island and several of their wives. The Tablet itself is a handsome addition to the, already beautifully decorated Barracca Church.'

"The only item of real interest as regards sporting news is that Private Whitaker, R.A.M.C., was selected to play for the Army team in the Army v. Navy football match for the Daily Malta Chronicle Cup. The Navy were victorious; we are, how!)ver, proud to say that Private Whitaker scored a goal for the Army. Private Bee was selected to play in the Army trial match, but not in the Army team.

" Lieutenant Roberts has proceeded home on leave."

NOTES FROM SECUNDERABAD, INDIA,-Lieutenant R R Lewis, RA.M.C., writes (January 31, 1907) :--

"Lieutenant-Colonel Yourdi left for England about two months ago, and Lieutenant-Colonel Q'Su11ivan was appointed Officer Commanding Station Hospital, and also assumed the duties of Senior Medical Officer in the place of LieutenantColonel Thompson, 1.M.S. Major Hale, RA.M.C., D.S.O., is shortly expected for .duty here from Burma. Captain S. O. Hall, R.A.l'lLC., arrived here from England for duty about December 20, and is now in charge of 'No. n. Section' and the family hospitals. He relieved Captain A. R Greenwood, R.A.M.C., who proceeded to England in the 'transport 'Rewa,' leaving Bombay on January 17. Captain H. B. Smallman, R.A.M.C., attached to the 2nd Royal Fusiliers for special work in connection with enteric fever, remains in charge of the brigade laboratory. Lieutenant R R Lewis, RA.M.C., sent from Bellary for temporary duty on October 15, is now permanently transferred and doing duty at Station Hospital. Lieutenant W. Wiley, RA.M.C., has also arrived from sick leave in England, and is doing duty at No. 1. Section Hospital. Captain D. L. Harding, RA.M.C., arrived at the station just before Christmas, having returned from an X-ray course at Dehra Dun. He is now most unfortunately suffering from an attack of enteric fever in the station hospital, evidently contracted on the railway journey. I am glad to report, however, that his condition is now considered more satisfactory. The shortage of Royal Army Medical Corps officers in the station is still to be deplored. The number of officers during the last four months has been just half what it should have been. The two new arrivals were welcomed with joy, but now that Captain Greenwood has gone home and Captain Harding is in hospital with enteric the work fov everyone is still doubled. However, it is a poor heart which never rejoices, and we live in hopes. The departure of Captain Greenwood from the station has left a blank that cannot easily be filled, and his loss is felt by the majority of residents here, with whom he was always most popular. Before leaving he was the guest of the Royal Army Medical Corps entertainment fund-together with other Corps guests-at a dinner given at the club, presided over by Lieutenant-Colonel O'Sullivan. Lieutenant-Colonel O'Sullivan, in proposing his health, suggested that there were many worse places than Secunderabad, and intimated that, when in England, he would wish himself back here again. Captain Greenwood, in replying, said that although he greatly regretted his departure from such a host of good friends and such a cheery station, he could not help thinking that there were compensations for what he lost here on the other side of the water: At the conclusion of his reply, everyone joined in wishing him luck and drinking his health with musical honours.

celebrated iu St. Patrick's Chapel. This was a most popular marriage, aud a very interesting fnnction all round. The bride is exceedingly well known throughout India as being one of the most talented amateur actresses who ever graced the' boards' at Simla. She is also possessed of a charming voice and has taken part in nearly every performance of note which has been staged in this country during the past two or three years. At the conclusion of the ceremony Major and Mrs. Milner passed down the aisle under an arch formed of the drawn swords of every officer present, and took their places in the imposing yellow and gold state coach of His Highness the Nizam of Hyderabad. Major Macquoid's regiment provided a team of six horses to draw the coach, with officers of that regiment acting as postillions. They then I.eft for the Hyderabad Contingent Mess, where a reception was held, escorted by a squadron of the 20th Deccan Horse, who looked most picturesque in their gay native uniforms. The large ball room of the Contingent Mess was crowded to overflowing with the officers, ladies and residents of the station; and many distinguished guests were present, including the Honourable Mr. Bayley, the Resident, and General Hamilton. The famous string band of the Hyderabad Contingent regiments played a very fine selection of music during the afternoQn, and the presents, which made a great display, were very numerous and costly, and included many from Indian nobles. Mr. CassoD Walker, LC.S., financial minister to His Highness the Nizam, proposed the health of the bride and bridegroom, and Major Milner's witty reply evoked much laughter. Major and Mrs. Milner left later to spend the honeymoon near Chudder Ghaut, close to Hyderabad, where a house had been lent them by His Highness the Nizam's minister;

"An institution, which for some reason or other has been allowed to lapse, is now being started again here. I allude to the Station Hospital Games' Club. This is an excellent institution, the main object of which is to provide the Assistant. Surgeons with recreation in the form of cricket, football, hockey, &c. Officers are invited to subscribe and also to take part in the games. They are thus brought into touch with the Assistant Surgeons, all of whom are very keen on this club. Wardboys-and, of course, natives are phenomenally good cricketers-are allowed to join, and pay a very small subscription monthly. A ground has been lent for this purpose, and it is hoped that the Games' Club will shortly be in full swing again. On the last occasion that the Minister's Cup for cricket was competed for the Station Hospital Games' Club was in the semi-final, and would probably have been victorious had it not been that two of their best players were away in camp at the time of the final match.

"I have~as I conclude these notes-just heard that Lieutenant-Colonel O'Sullivan is to return to the north again shortly. This will be deplored by everyone, as the amount of good he has done during his short stay with US is inestimable. He will be relieved by Lieutenant-Colonel Battersby.

"The climate here at present is very good, being cool and breezy, but the hot weatber will be with us now very shortly, when we may expect a temperature of anything up to 115° in the shade.

"The station has been quiet lately owing to the fact that every officer has been out in camp for fifteen days on combined cavalry and infantry manceuvres, but they have now returned, and polo is again in full swing.

"This, on the whole, is a very healthy station, and considering the strength of the garrison, there does not appear to be a very great amount of disease. A considerable number of cases of abscess of the liver, however, have been treated in the Station Hospital lately, and malaria of the malignant tertian type has been prevalent, but is now diminishing."

" Standing Committee on Enteric'Fever.-The following subjects were discussed at the second meeting of the Standing Committee on Enteric Fever recently held at Simla, and resolutions passed concerning them :- ,

(1) Removal and disposal of sewage; (2) washing of clothes; (3) appointment of special sanitary officers for large cantonments; (4) organising regimental supervision of sanitation in lines; (5) improved means for removing infected clothing from barracks to hospitals for disinfection; (6) disinfectors for excreta; (7) the provision of heat. exchange water purifiers for use in camps and on service; means of conveying meals from kitchens to barrack rooms; increasing the number ()f clinical laboratories at divisional and brigade headquarters.

"It is satisfactory to be able to record a considerable and progressive decrease in the cases of enteric fever occurring latterly amongst British troops serving in this country, the fresh admissions under this heading throughont the whole of India being for the last three months as follows: September, 117; October, 66; November, 31. No doubt the increased attention paid to sanitation has already contribnted to this reduction."

NOTES FROM WYNBERG, SOUTH AFRICA.-Quartermaster-Sergeant G. H. Roberts, RA.M.C., writes (January 10, 1907): "During the past three month's we have enjoyed some excellent cricket in the peninsula. Chief interest has, however, been centred in the Military Cricket League, Cape Peninsula, which was formed at the beginning of the season.' From the following table it will be seen how keen a struggle is taking place for premier position :- '

"The only defeat in the league was received at the hands of the leaders at the beginning of the season before the medicals had found their true form. Since then the team have not looked back and have won each game with ease. The last fixture of the tournament, so far as we are concerned, was played last week, and ended in an easy win for the Corps by 231 runs, our opponents on this occasion being A Company, Yorkshire Regiment.

"The following have been most successful: Batting-Lieutenant-Colonel W. Heffernan, Captain J. B. Short, Lieutenant Moore, Staff-Sergeant Yeates and Corporal Gregson. Bowling-Captain J. B. Short, Privates Call ender aqd Roe. The two latter embarked home on January 28, and Captain Short on February 8, so we shall have to fall back on some of our talented reserves.

REGIS'rEI:{ FOR INDIAN SERV AN'rS.

FEW officers on going to India have not experienced the difficulty of getting good servants. The discomforts on arrival and of a long journey up country, unprovided with a bearer, or, what is worse, provided with a hastily selected man, taken haphazard from the crowd of indifferent or bad characters who congregate in Bombay, have fallen to the lot of most of us, whilst the period of trial and vexation until a proper staff of servants is secured is familiar to us alL

In our Corps,' with regular annual reliefs, it should not be difficult to arrange for an interchange. Officers leaving India would then be able to provide places for the good and tried retainers they are relinquishing, and new arrivals would, by taking on these men, be spared many of the worries and troubles which now befall them. Further, good servants would not be lost to the Corps, and the prospects of continuous employment could not fail to have attraction for the better class of men.

With these ends in view, officers due home from India are requested to communicate to the Journal particulars of servants whom they can recommend, so that officers going out in relief may have an opportunity of securing these men. The particulars required are :-

(1) Class of·servant. (2) Whether for bachelor or married officer. (3) District or station to which he belongs. (4) Any special recommendations. • NOTE.-The date the officer leaves India should also be stated, and when and where

the servant will be available.

ROYAL ARMY MEDICAL OOLLEGE. EXAMINATION FOR COMMISSION IN THE ROYAL ARMY MEDICAL CORPS.

Medicine.-(Case for Commentary.) Thursday, January 24, 1907), commencing 10 a.m. (Time allowed, 1?J hours.) Read your instructions.

A male, aged 43, had mild syphilis in the year 1894 ; he was treated for three months with mercury and iodid.e of potassium.

In January, 1906, after a good deal of business strain and worry, he became sleepless, irritable, and unable to concentrate his attention on his work. At this time, and for some months previously, he had been taking alcohol (whisky) in excess. The appetite was bad, the bowels constipated; he complained of slight headache and occasional giddiness.

On examination, he was fOUlid to be well-nourished and muscular; the tongue was coated and tremulous; the hands were tremulous; the articulation of labials was somewhat defective; the knee-jerks, Achilles-jerks and arm-jerks were notably exaggerated; a double extensor response (the Babinski sign) was present; the pupils, which were unequal in size, did not contract to light, but contracted actively on convergence; the optic discs were normal; the liver was slightly enlarged; the urine was normal.

In March, the patient had an epileptiform convulsion, followed by loss of speech and right-sided hemiplegia; the hemiplegia and aphasia lasted for two days and then completely passed off.

After this attack, the mental condition became much impaired, but the patient stated that he felt quite well; the memory was defective, the patient was irritable, he rambled and was unable to concentrate his attention for any length of time on the subject in hand. The tremor in the tongue and facial muscles arid the articulatory .defect became more marked; on several occasions there was incontinence of urine and freces: weakness and spasticity in the lower extremities gradually developed.

Lumbar puncture showed a marked excess of lymphocytes in the cerebro-spinal fluid.

Discuss fully the diagnosis, prognosis and treatment, and state what significance you attach to the. condition of the pupils, the weakness and spasticity in the lower extremities, the exaggeration of the deep reflexes and the BabinSki sign. .

Surgery.-(Case for Commentary.) Thursday, January 24., 19Q7, commencing 11.30 a.m. (Time allowed, 1~ hours.) Read your instructions.

G. W., a n;mn aged 53, had generally enjoyed good health. He was of .full haj)it and florid complexion; There was nothirig in his family history to throw any light On his present illness. A year ago he began to suffer from pains. referred to the upper part of the abdomen. These he described as" a kind of spasm," which he attributed to indigestion; but they were not brought on nor made worse by taking food. Th;ree days before admission he was seized with acute pain in the right side of the abdomen and in the epigastrium, the point of greatest intensity being in the appendix region. The pain, though continuous, varied in degree; at short intervals it assumed a griping character. There was a feeling of sickness, but no actual vomiting. On examination the abdominal wall waR found to be extremely rigid on the right side from the costal margin downwards. 'rhere was exquisite tenderness on pressure. There \vas nO'swelling at the hernial apertures. Nothing abnormal was detected by rectal examination.

There was neither frequent, delayed, nor painful micturition. . The body temperature was 103° F. Shortly after admission a severe rigor occurred. The abdominal cavity was opened in the appendix region. The appendix was

enlarged and inflamed, but it had not perforated. There was no suppuration about it. The pelvic cavity was normal. After removal of the appendix it was easy to make out an extremely tense swelling,

which extended from the costal border to a little below the level of the umbilicus in the 'nipple line. By extending the original incision the swelling was found to be continuous with the lower margin of the liver. It was somewhat pyriform in shape, and was only very slightly movable; the omentum was glued to it by recent plastic exudation.

After two ounces of purulent fluid had been drawn off, a soft grating sensation was detected on palpation. The cavity was freely opened and evacuated and drained by (1

large rubber tube. Four or five days after the operation there was a copious discharge of freQal m~~ter

from the wound. (It may be remarked that the stump of the appendix had become

,sealed off and gave no further trouble.) The character and quantity of frocal matter which escaped was not influenced by food recently taken into the stomach.

Later on, a large inflammatory swelling appeared in front of, and below, the right ,ear. At first it was generally tense, but later it became fluctuant at several parts and required operative treatment. The frocal fistula eventually closed and the patient made a good recovery.

Discuss the case generally, directing your remarks especially to the nature and ,sequence of the lesions and to the relation, if any, in which they.seyerally stood.
