Dear Parents, Because of Election Day on Tuesday, November 6 there will be no school for District 833 students and staff. We look forward to seeing you at our Parent Teacher Conferences November 13 and 15! This 15 minute block is a time reserved for your child’s teacher to share information about how your child is doing so far this year as well as for you to share concerns/joys with the teacher. You can sign up for a time to meet with your child’s teacher by going to our Royal Oaks website: http://roes.sowashco.org Thank you for coming to these confer-ences! Your support of your child’s education is greatly appreciated. As you know, the information that is shared with you at these conferences is very im-portant, and your input is valuable as we work together to assist your child in growing academically, socially, and behaviorally. Please contact us any time via email or phone throughout the year with concerns and joys about your child’s education. This year we will have two Read and Feed times during conference week, Wednesday, November 16 and Friday, November 18. You are invited to eat with your child and go to the Book Fair before or after your child’s lunch time. As you know, November-March in Minnesota can be very cold!! To be sure that your child is dressed appropriately, please remember that children will go outside every day unless the temperature is below zero and/or the wind child is 10 below zero. Please plan to have students go outside every day as we make this determination right before the first recess at 10:45. This means students should always come with winter gear: winter coat, gloves/mittens/, hat, scarf, snow pants and boots (when there is snow OR just to stay warm!). Thanksgiving Break will be Thursday, November 22 and Friday, November 23. Monday, December 3 there will also be no school for students as teachers/administrators will be involved in professional development. Enjoy this time with family and friends! Election Day is November 6th!
There is NO SCHOOL on Election Day.
NOW is the time to check to see if the winter gear from last year still fits!
Please make sure that your children are wearing winter coats, boots, hats, and mittens every day during the cold weather season. Students need cold-weather gear to stay warm during outdoor recess, while walking to school, or when on the school bus. Children will go outside for recess every day unless the wind chill is 10 below or the temperature is zero or below.

Thanksgiving Break
NO SCHOOL Thursday, November 22nd
and Friday November 23rd.
There will be NO SCHOOL on December 3rd as teachers and administrators will be participating in a professional development day.
How do we start our day at
Royal Oaks?
Every classroom begins every day with Social Emotional Learning Time (SELT).
In order for your child to start the school day ready to learn and not be rushed, please be sure that he/she is
at school by 7:50 am at the latest. The bell for students to enter the school is 7:40 am. If your child is
eating breakfast at school, breakfast is served starting at 7:20 am.
It is important that your child is in the classroom prior to SELT so that he/she can unpack his/her book bag,
make a lunch choice, and be ready to begin the day with his/her teacher and classmates.
We focus on the following concepts during the first 15-20 minutes of Social Emotional Learning Time,
as well as throughout the day.
Self-Awareness
Self-Management
Social Awareness
Relationship Skills
Responsible Decision Making
We are very purposeful and intentional in implementing SELT. Research has shown that when Social
Emotional Learning is focused on in a school, the climate, behavior and engagement of students improve.
Please review the following few pages of this newsletter to learn more about SELT!
For more information, the organization, Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learing
(CASEL), has created this video about Social Emotional Learning:

If you have questions or concerns about SELT, please contact Dr. Risius at 651-425-4703
On November 7th, 2018 many Hindus, Jains, and Sikhs around the world, in
Woodbury, and at Royal Oaks will celebrate Diwali (Deepawali, Deepava-
li). Diwali is the biggest and the brightest of all Hindu festivals. It is the festi-
val of lights: deep means "light" and avali "a row" to become "a row of
lights." Diwali is marked by four days of celebration, which literally illumi-
nates the country with its brilliance and dazzles people with its joy.

Veteran’s Day
Royal Oaks will be having an all-school assembly on Friday, November 9th
from 9:25-9:55 to celebrate American’s Veterans.
Student Council members will be helping lead this assembly and the choir
will be performing a song that they have prepared. Students are invited
to bring a family member or friend who is a Veteran to this assembly, so
that we can personally thank these brave men and women for serving our
country. Students received a blue sheet of paper with details regarding
bringing a Veteran. If you need a new copy, please ask your child’s
teacher.
Royal Oaks is UNITED!
The Royal Oaks community participated in several organized activities during the month of October to promote unity and acceptance, to raise awareness around bullying, and to spread kindness. On October 24th, students and staff showed their collective unity by wearing orange and creating a unity chain.

Beads on One String Assemblylyyyyyy
On October 23rd, students were treated to a performance by Dennis Warner, creator of Beads on One String, a program on unity. Picture a beaded necklace, where every bead is a different size, shape and color, but all held together by one string. This is the concept Dennis Warner envisioned while creating a song that evolved into the beautiful book showing kids and adults that we are all connected, like beads on one string.
Mr. Warner enjoying lunch with students after the performance.
Art students made beads that were strung on ONE string and hung in the entrance hallway. Ask your student how they decorated their bead!
