A technical guest lecture meeting was held on 14th May 2018

at 6.00 pm in IE(I), Tamilnadu State Centre auditorium. The

topic of the day was “Blockchain Technology & Digital

Transformation”. Er M Kumar FIE, Eminent Engineer,

IE(I), TNSC welcomed the gathering and introduced the

Chief Guest Er Ram Arunachalam (ARR) Intellect Galaxy

Pvt Ltd., Er Ram Arunachalam delivered the lecture on the

above topic with power point presentation.

What is Blockchain?

Blockchain is a Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT), which

holds history of custodianship, ownership & location of assets

(digital currency, contracts, reference data). Blockchain are

also termed as "Internet of Values".

Blockchains are ledgers (like Excel spreadsheets), which

accepts input from lots of different parties. The ledger can

only be changed when there is a consensus among the group.

That makes them more secure, and it means there's no need

for a central authority to approve transactions

Blockchain is a distributed database that maintains a

continuously growing, append only list of ordered,

immutable, time stamped records that are secured with

advanced cryptographic hashes.

Benefits of Blockchain

• Brings in complete Transparency on Data

• Establishes Trust & Accountability

• Peer-to-Peer transactions (eliminating Intermediates)

• Data Authentication & Verification - Provably Immutable

• Very Secure and Hard to tamper

• Prevents modification of previous record

• Faster Transaction Speed

• Better Data Management - Inside / Outside the company

• Reduces Operational Cost and complexity of cross-

enterprise business process

TALK ON “BLOCKCHAIN TECHNOLOGY & DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION”14.05.2018

• Reduces Fraud and Optimizes many Operations

• Streamlines Business Processes

• Lowers uncertainty

• Improves Overall Productivity across the organization

Blockchain Opportunities & Forecast

Gartner forecasts the business value-add of Blockchain will

exceed $3.1 trillion by 2030, indicating that it shows promise

in terms of utility for business and is a technology that's here

to stay

A recent survey by SAP found that 92% of business leaders

view Blockchain as an opportunity, with the most promising

use cases ranked as:

• Supply chain and IoT - 63%

• Legal and regulatory - 19%

• Cryptocurrency - 8%

• Sustainability - 3%

World Environment Day (WED) is celebrated every year on

5 th June to raise global awareness to take positive

environmental action to protect nature and the planet earth.

It is run by the United Nations Environment Programme

(UNEP). The World Environment Day has been started

celebrating as an annual event on 5th of June since 1973 at

the Stockholm conference, Sweden and then started

celebrating annually at global level.

This year, the Tamilnadu State Centre of the Institution of

Engineers (India) observed the World Environment Day

jointly with IE(I) Tiruvallur Local Centre on Tuesday the 5th

June 2018 at the IE(I)TNSC Auditorium, Chennai. At the

outset, Dr P Rajamani, Vice President, IE(I) welcomed the

gathering. Dr R Venkatesan, Chairman, IE(I) Kanchepuram

Local Centre introduced the Chief Guest Er M Kumar, FIE

Chief Engineer, Tamilnadu Police Housing Corporation Ltd.,

Chennai.

Er M Kumar delivered his lecture on the theme “Beat

Plastic Pollution”. To beat plastic pollution, we need to

entirely rethink our approach to designing producing and

using plastic products. Our goal on this World Environment

day, is to inspire the kind of solutions that lead to sustainable

behavior change upstream.

In the next 10-15 years, global plastic production is projected

to nearly double. Avoiding the worst of these outcomes

demands a complete rethinking of the way we produce, use

and manage plastic. Individuals are increasingly exercising

their power as consumers. People are turning down plastic

straws plates, bowls and cups, cleaning beaches and

coastlines and reconsidering their purchase habits in

supermarkets.

Single used plastic materials, spread and contaminate the

atmospheric earth and also the water, which leads lot of

hazards to the all living hoods.

If the pollution of plastics is not controlled, the entire earth

will be facing very big problem. So it is a very big challenge

WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAYTheme: “Beat Plastic Pollution”

to the world, to fight against the pollution caused due to

plastics. Several attempts were made to recycle the plastic,

but the cost of the recycling is high. Also during recycling

process, certain toxic gases are produced which leads to

health hazards.

The main object of this programme is

(1) To minimize the use of the plastics

(2) The used plastics may be converted into new materials

and utilized in the construction purpose such as making

of road, bricks and paver blocks

(3) In many places, the groceries like plates, cups and other

utensils were made up of plastics. This may be switched

over to areca leaf and some other preserved leaf and

the carry bags may be manufactured by banana fibres.

(4) The used plastics can be converted into the pan used

in construction, HDPE water tanks, waste material

collection drums etc.,

To dispose the plastic wastes the WH factors should be

adopted they are (i) Why (ii) What, (iii) When, (iv) Where

and (v) How. If this is properly designed, disposed of plastics

is not hectic.

The contribution of "GIGO" (Garbage in Garbage out) is

more pronounced while disposing the plastic. Therefore we

should a right scientific method to dispose plastic, so that

the product produced from plastic waste is not a hazardous

one.

Er R Ramdoss, Honorary Secretary, IE(I) Tamilnadu State

Centre introduced the Special Guest Dr.S Kanmani,

Professor & Director, Centre for Environmental Studies,

Anna University, Chennai. Dr S Kanmani shared her views

about the theme of the day.

Dr P Rajamani, Vice President, IE(I) presented the memento
