The current report presents the accomplishments of The Research & Translation Center (RTC) in the academic year 2014 - 2015. This is prepared with the aim of documenting these accomplish-ments, disseminating significant information to all concerned, and planning for the future based on solid data and realistic grounds. To this end, the report includes nine main sections: I. RTC vision/ mission II. RTC accomplishments in points III. RTC structure IV. Updated/ new policies & agreements V. Research accomplishments VI. Translation accomplishments VII. Consultation accomplishments VIII. Publications accomplishments IX. Perspective into the future In this executive summary, the reported accomplishments are briefly summarized.

In the field of research, the Center has successfully worked on varied fronts. First, the University Council approved the updated research funding and the book-authoring and translation funding bylaws. The Council also approved the policies for research excellence and translation excellence awards. Besides, a draft of a policy to establish research groups at Prince Sultan University has been discussed at the Center’s committees. Second, the Center held numerous events that consti-tuted a rich platform for faculty members and students to share their research and learn about oth-ers’ significant contributions. Among the major events held in 2014 - 2015 are 7 specialized research forums in collaboration with PSU colleges/ departments, an annual undergraduate research forum with the participation of 6 Saudi universities, a research exhibition with the participation of 15 re-search centers, research groups and universities, 14 faculty research training sessions, 17 student research training sessions, and 4 student research competitions. Third, the Center has supervised the completion of 4 university-funded research and book translation projects in 2014 - 2015, is su-pervising the implementation of 15 other projects, has received the University Council’s approval for 3 new book-authoring projects and is processing the applications of 17 more projects. The Center is also involved with the processing of 5 research projects funded by King Abdel Aziz City of Science and Technology for PSU’s faculty members and students. Regarding translation, the Center has established itself among the important translation centers

in Saudi universities. In addition to its key role in providing translation/ editing services to all PSU academic departments and administrative offices, the Center held a number of significant events that were open to the public. The 2nd celebration of the International Translation Day was held on November 5th, 2014 featuring various talks and workshops by prominent figures in the field of trans-lation. Besides, 5 translation seminars were held targeting varied topics, such as the teaching of interpretation, image making in translation, corpus linguistics and translation studies and the signifi-cance of pragmatics for translation. The Center also organized the 2nd Inter-University Translation Competition for the second consecutive year, in which 8 Saudi universities took part. The Competi-tion comprised three tracks; (1) the consecutive interpretation competition, (2) the written translation competition and (3) the student translation work display. In addition to these major events, the Stu-dent Translation Club organized 10 training sessions, 4 cultural events, 1 field trip and a celebration of the International English Language Day. The Club students were also supervised to translate the brochures of the Saudi Alzheimer’s Disease Association upon the Association’s request. The ser-vice was provided free of charge as part of the Club’s community service projects.

The Center has also taken steady steps toward promoting its consultation and publication services.
Regarding consultation services, the PSU outreach booklet has been compiled. The dissemination
of the booklet will be accompanied by a series of promotional workshops.
The Center has also provided two consultation services to the Capital Market Authority in the field
of translation. As for publications, the Center has continued its practice of issuing the annual faculty
research booklet which documents the research output of PSU faculty members. In addition, the
Center has added three new publications; (1) the annual accomplishments report which was issued
for the year 2013 - 2014, (2) Translation Connect, a semi-annual publication on Translation, Lan-
guage and Culture which was issued twice in January and May 2015.and (3) Beacon, an annual
publication on research.

The Research & Translation Center extends special thanks and appreciation to all who sup-ported its efforts on the road for excellence in the academic year 2014-2015.
First and foremost, we thank the University Council for its continuous support to the Center’s ef-forts to promote research and translation at Prince Sultan University. We also thank the Higher Management, particularly Dr. Ahmed Yamani, the Rector of Prince Sultan University, and Prof. Dr. Saad Al-Riwaite, Vice-Rector for Administrative & Financial Affairs, for their relentless support and kind approvals of our proposals. Special thanks are also extended to our leaders, Dr. Ab-dulhafeez Feda, the Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs & Research, and Dr. Musaed Bin Muqbil, the Dean of Graduate Studies & Research for their inspiring leadership. In addition to the Higher Management, we are most indebted to the academic leaders of all col-leges/ departments who supported our efforts to enhance research/ translation on campus and beyond. Their enlightening feedback has always been valued and appreciated.

The Research and Translation Center (RTC) supports individual and collaborative research and translation activities that address the current and future needs of the Kingdom and the region. The Center facilitates high quality research and translation activities across all sectors of the Prince Sultan University. It organizes seminars, workshops, symposia and conferences, encourages collaboration and partnerships, and offers consultation services. In addition to the Center’s Management and staff members, RTC has benefitted from the expertise of two committees; (1) the Higher Research Committee and (2) the RTC Council. Besides, the Center has greatly benefitted from the valuable contributions of a number of volunteering faculty members. More details are included below.
Higher Research Committee This is a committee formed by the Rector of the University and headed by the Vice Rector for Academic Affairs and Research with the membership of the Dean of Graduate Studies & Research, the Center Directors and a number of distinguished research-producing faculty in the University for the purpose of executing the Research Projects Funding Program. Among the duties of this committee are overseeing the preparation of the annual research agenda and budget prior to submission to the University Council for approval; spending from the research budget within its duly authorized limits; providing technical and administrative supervision of the various activities of the Center; engaging experts, reviewers and consultants from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and abroad to referee (and assist in the execution of) the various research projects; developing plans and programs, overseeing their implementation, and evaluating their performance; and periodically informing the University Council of these activities.

RTC Council This is a committee formed by the Vice Rector for Academic Affairs and Research and headed by the Dean of Graduate Studies and Research. Among its members are the Center’s Directors and a number of distinguished research-producing faculty from all departments for the purpose of implementing the Research Projects Funding Program. Among the duties of this committee are receiving applications for funding, ensuring the completeness of the data provided and the potential need for equipment and materials per University regulations, recommending project reviewers, following up on the implementation and progress of projects, and making relevant recommendations to the Higher Committee for Research.

The year 2014 - 2015 witnessed important developments with regards to the RTC bylaws/ policies. The major accomplishments in this respect are: • The University Council approved:

• The Center drafted a policy for funding research groups and the policy was discussed at the RTC Council.

V. Research Accomplishments In the field of research, RTC is determined to establish a conducive research culture and provide the necessary infrastructure at Prince Sultan University with the aim of enhancing the research efforts of faculty members and promoting research among students at both the undergraduate and post-graduate levels. The Center also aims to empower qualified researchers to produce research that serves national priorities and international needs for the welfare of humanities, supports the commercialization of research and knowledge exchange with the industry and opens the door for efficient collaborations and joint research projects with other research centers, educational institutions, the government and the job market. Toward this goal, the Center has been engaged in a variety of activities:
• Encouraging research efforts by faculty members/ students, and coordinates activities to establish strong links with society organizations, and gradually build a strong resource base.
• Fostering professional consultation, development studies, and professional/ technical training in collaboration with local and international organizations.

Undergraduate Research Program The Center pays special attention to the promotion of undergraduate research through innovative strategies and inspiring techniques. The Center’s Student Research Club has organized diverse activities including research training sessions, supervised research projects and student research competitions. The academic year 2014 - 2015 also witnessed the launch of the First Undergraduate Research Forum (URF) at Prince Sultan University. The Forum was held on February 14, 2015 including par-ticipant students from six Saudi universities; King Saud University, Princess Noura University, Al-Yamamah University, AlFaisal University, King Saud bin Abdul Aziz University for Health Sciences and Prince Sultan University. The Forum received a total of 118 abstracts (65 paper presentations and 53 poster presentations). All submissions were double-blind peer-reviewed, and only accepted abstracts by referees were allowed to present at the Forum.

RTC has also supported student participation in various national and regional research venues. For
instance, the Center collaborated with the Deanship of Student Affairs in preparing students for the
participation at the 6th Scientific Student Conference organized by the Saudi Ministry of Education.
A total of 18 student research projects were submitted for consideration by RTC. All projects were
reviewed and awards were provided for the first three winning projects.
In accordance with the PSU Research Funding Bylaws, RTC supports three types of projects; re-search projects, book-authoring projects and book-translation projects. As for research projects, the academic year 2014 -2015 has witnessed the completion of 3 research projects, and the processing of 31 projects. The projects are classified according to the batch of proposal submission below:

The Exhibition was launched with the following aims: • To highlight the international emphasis on «research impact» • To emphasize PSU’s commitment to quality research and societal development • To provide the participants with an opportunity to learn about major research accomplishments
of the exhibiting research institutions• To provide venues for networking to support future research collaboration • To provide venue for the exhibition of outstanding research in the Kingdom • To offer opportunities for researchers to attend research training sessions
The Event consisted of two tracks; (1) the Exhibition at the Main Hall of the College for Women and (2) research training workshops at different training halls. Both tracks were open to the public (wom-en only) free of charge, a fact that was much appreciated by the exhibitors, trainers and participants. The Event was sponsored by Riyadh Bank, the Event Strategic Sponsor. The total number of visi-tors for the Exhibition was 147 and the total number of participants at the training sessions was 193.

RTC has made significant developments in its use and provision of e-services:
• RTC has launched an online website for refereeing research proposals, programmed by Mr. AbA-
dulRahman Yassin the RTC IT Specialist. All referees of the 2014 - 2015 Batch of research pro-
posals have used the website to conduct their reviews.
• RTC has offered remote access for the faculty members of the College of Business Administrar-
tion (CBA) to connect to the lab computers from their offices. One of the most used applications
by the CBA faculty members is SPSS, which was purchased and installed on lab computers at
their request.
• RTC has collaborated with Thomson Reuters via CBA to install one of the most significant applicac-
tions for real time statistics, which will greatly facilitate research.
In the field of translation, RTC aims to support high-quality translation projects by professional trans-lators from PSU and beyond in an effort to support knowledge exchange, disseminate information

and scientific advances and promote inter-cultural understanding. Support by the Center is provided for projects in different fields of specialization in recognition of the significance of translation in all walks of life. To this end, the PSU Research Funding Bylaws supports the funding of book transla-tion projects as discussed in the previous section of the report. Besides, the Center is determined to provide top-notch professional development opportunities for translators and translation professors through a variety of translation seminars and workshops. Professional development opportunities are also provided to translation students through the Student Translation Club which organizes a variety of activities including translation training sessions, competitions, talks by guest speakers, etc. Hence, the Center is engaged in a variety of activities:
• Providing financial support to high-quality book translation projects through a highly competitive funding process.
• Offering a multitude of professional development opportunities for professional translators, trans-lation professors and student translators.
• Recognizing excellence in translation through organizing competitions and offering awards of translation excellence.
• Supporting collaboration among translators and translation professors and offering excellent platforms for networking, sharing translation interests and initiating collaborative projects.

On November 5th, 2014, RTC organized its second celebration of the International Translation Day
in recognition of the significance of translation to the world. The celebration program included 6 talks
and 1 workshop. In addition to the PSU presenters, speakers also came from King Saud University,
Imam Mohamed Bin Saud Islamic University, Princess Noura University, King Abdullah Institute for
Translation & Arabization and The Institute for Public Administration. The Event enjoyed good at-
tendance of 271 participants from different organizations, institutions and centers. The majority of
guests came from King Saud University, Princess Noura University, Imam Muhamed Bin Saud Uni-
versity, Qassim University, King Abdullah Institute for Translation & Arabization, Ministry of Educa-
tion and the Gulf Cooperation Council.

VI.2. Monthly Translation SeminarsIn the academic year 2014 - 2015, RTC held 5 translation seminars. The first four seminars were open to the public whereas the last seminar was held particularly for the English Department faculty members at PSU. The seminars were attended by 230 participants, from various universities such as King Saud University, Princess Noura University, Imam Muhamed Bin Saud University, King Faisal Center for Research and Islamic Studies, King Abdullah Institute for Translation & Arabization and the Ministry of Education.

In addition to the translation training/sharing sessions, the Club hosted 4 cultural events calling for mutual understanding and inter-cultural dialogue. The Events were organized by the students, su-pervised by faculty members.
Another special event that the Club held on April 23,2015 was the International English Language Day. In collaboration with the English Department, the Club celebrated the Day through a number talks by PSU alumni, faculty members and administrators on their story with the English language. This was followed by varied performances by the English Department students. Finally, the closure was a play performed by the English Dept. Literary Club. The Event was attended by 300 PSU stu-dents and faculty members.
The Club also organized a field trip to Prince Salman Science Oasis on March 9, 2015. The trip at-tracted 22 students to visit the Oasis and learn about its scientific innovations. The trip was super-vised by Ms. Mona Al-Yemni, RTC, and Ms. Manal Al-Thagafi, English Dept.

The Club launched a new activity in 2014 - 2015, which is offering translation services for charity associations free of charge. The Club has already collaborated with the Saudi Alzheimer’s Disease Association www.alz.org.sa, and translated their brochures upon their request. This type of activity connects students with the community that needs their translation expertise. Besides, the transla-tion was conducted under the supervision of RTC Staff, which provided an excellent opportunity for students to practice their translation skills in an authentic context. In addition to the sessions, events and field trip, the Center organized the 2nd Inter-University Translation Competition on April 12, 2015. The competition included three components, (1) a written translation competition, (2) an interpretation competition and (3) a display of the Translation Student Works. Eight universities participated in the competition; i.e., King Saud University, King Abdel Aziz University, Effat University, Shaqra University, Hail University, Majmaa University, Prince Sattam University and Prince Sultan University. The competition was judged by independent referees as follows:

VII. Consultation Accomplishments
•The RTC Outreach Initiative (led by Dr. Mostafa Ismail & Dr. Mohammad Hattab):
RTC compiled a booklet including all consultation and professional training services at PSU. The
services are categorized according to major. In May 2015 the booklet was sent for design. It is
planned to issue the booklet during the summer holiday. At the beginning of 2015 - 2016, the
booklet will be sent to different organizations in the industry market to highlight PSU’s consultation
and research potential.
• RTC conducted two consultation services to the Capital Market Authority CMA in the field of
Translation/ Editing.

RTC has produced four significant publications during the academic year 2014 - 2015: (1) Faculty Research Booklet
RTC has published and disseminated a summary of the research output of PSU faculty members during the academic year 2013 - 2014. RTC is also in the process of issuing the Faculty Research Booklet for the academic year 2014 - 2015.
(2) The RTC Annual Accomplishments Report 2013 - 2014 A report including all the RTC accomplishments in the academic year 2013 - 2014 was published and disseminated to all concerned PSU staff/ entities and non-PSU institutions. The report includ-ed all the Center’s accomplishments on two fronts; research and translation. Detailed information was provided on all the Center’s activities.
(3) Translation Connect RTC issued a semi-annual magazine entitled Translation Connect , which includes contributions in Translation, Language and Culture. Two editions were issued in the academic year 2014 - 2015; Issue 1 in January 2015 and Issue 2 in May 2015. The Magazine was well-received by its readers all over the world through its website http://info.psu.edu.sa/pscw/Translation_Connect/

IX. Perspective into the Future As shown in the current report, RTC has taken important steps towards achieving the University’s aspiration to support research and translation in PSU and create a firm, well-grounded position for the Center in Saudi Arabia and the region. The Center has already achieved significant accomplish-ments in the fields of research and translation, and is planning for more success in the future. Regarding research, the Center is enhancing its research funding capabilities based on the PSU re-search funding bylaws. The Center is also processing applications for the establishment of research groups/ specialized research units in order to create links with the industry, establish connections with other research centers/ institutes and attract research grants. Besides, the Center is organizing major research forums and research training events for faculty members/ researchers and manag-ing a strong undergraduate research program serving students from all colleges/ departments.

In addition, the Center is in the process of finalizing brochures to market the PSU consultation ca-pabilities through its Outreach Initiative. Such efforts aim to capitalize on the expertise of faculty members to offer consultation/ training/ translation services to the job market, industry and other institutions. The Center is also active in disseminating relevant information to the community and the outside world through its various publications.
